Chapter 81 What Exactly Did I Do Wrong?
Chapter 81 What Exactly Did I Do Wrong?
Daniel had to admit it.
Elsie was very sharp.
Yesterday, when Rhett commented on Elsie, he'd taken it as an old friend showing pity, wanting to help out. To sign the contract with the Morgan family, he'd just gone along with it.
But Elsie's insights just now, especially her additions and ideas about the contract, were almost identical to what he'd written himself. In some areas, her understanding was even deeper.
Without a thorough grasp of the entire project, it would be impossible to write such a proposal.
Even Jada, and Aria, who got her position through connections with Ollie, might not have this ability.
Because Daniel had seen the collaboration proposals those two had written—basically just templates found online with the names and prices changed—submitted carelessly without a single usable page.
But the more capable Elsie proved to be, the stronger Daniel's inner anger grew.
This anger wasn't jealousy—he wasn't that petty.
It was more like an inexplicable rage. Just seeing Elsie made him feel uncomfortable all over.
Especially remembering how close she sat to Chris yesterday—could she really be interested in that scumbag? Would she really do anything to get ahead?
Thinking about this made Daniel even angrier.
He snorted coldly, turned around, and asked, "What are you doing here?"
If it were anyone else, he'd be thrilled right now, might even give them a promotion and raise on the spot, wouldn't let talent go to waste.
But when it came from Elsie, he felt an unreasonable resistance.
"Good morning, Mr. Wilson. I'm here mainly about what happened yesterday."
"Wasn't yesterday's matter already settled? Didn't you see the company's decision? You're suspended with pay. You're lucky someone helped you. Instead of staying home to collect your salary, you come here playing the victim and making up this whole story. Who taught you this—Chris or Rhett?"
Daniel curled his lips dismissively.
He knew this was Elsie's own thinking. Deep down, he acknowledged Elsie's abilities.
But looking at Elsie now, he racked his brain trying to hurt her, mock her, ridicule her.
He suddenly realized he took pleasure in this feeling, found a strange satisfaction in it that no amount of money or achievement could bring.
Even though Elsie had mentally prepared herself, Daniel's sarcasm and mockery still caused her unbearable pain. She lowered her eyes, bit her lip, trying to calm her emotions.
A flash of pleasure crossed Daniel's eyes.
"Mr. Wilson, I'm here to apologize for yesterday. You left in such a hurry, I didn't get a chance to explain."
Elsie said.
"Explain what? You mean about how you accidentally fell, Chris helped pick up your documents, and Chris accidentally saw the contents of the contract? You don't need to explain. Close the door on your way out, and don't come to my office again."
Daniel waved his hand impatiently.
"But you wouldn't believe the surveillance footage either, would you? You'd think I betrayed the company, that Chris and I staged it for you to see."
Elsie struck first, simply throwing back the words Daniel was preparing to say.
Daniel pursed his lips and snorted, "Isn't that the case? Looks like you've already seen Katya."
"This has nothing to do with Katya. Stop slandering other people. I knew you'd say that!"
Elsie quickly changed the subject, her words carrying a sharp edge.
"Slander?"
Daniel's voice rose several notches. He stared at Elsie in disbelief:
"I don't know how that word comes out of the mouth of a woman like you. Do you even have the right to use that word? You're the one who's always slandering others. How could anyone slander you?"
Clearly, Daniel was truly angry now.
But to Elsie, Daniel was being completely unreasonable at this point.
She really couldn't figure out where she'd slandered Daniel, or what ability and qualification she had to slander the great Wilson family heir. Hadn't Daniel been misunderstanding and slandering her since she joined the company?
Was it because of that accident three years ago, when they slept together?
Was that her fault? Wasn't it Veda and Wren's scheme? In a way, wasn't she also a victim?
After that night, she got pregnant and gave birth to two children. Had she ever used those children to threaten Daniel? Had she ever asked him for a single cent?
Daniel was being so unreasonable!
"What exactly did I do wrong to make you target me like this? Can you name a few things? I'll change, okay?"
"Is it about that night three years ago? Yes, you're right. I did like you once; I was infatuated with you. But liking a man doesn't mean I'd stoop to using those methods to get him. How many times do I have to say it—I didn't do that! How many times do I have to say it—I don't have any illusions about you anymore!"
"I'm here for work. I want to keep this job. I won't seduce you, and I won't seduce other men. I just want to make up for my mistakes. The mistakes I made, I'll fix them myself. I don't want money, I don't want a promotion or raise. I just want to go to the Morgan Group once. Mr. Wilson, can you give me one chance!"
Elsie fired off her words like bullets.
Daniel had challenged her limits again and again, each time cutting deep.
She kept telling herself not to care about what Daniel said, but she couldn't help it. Every time Daniel wrongly accused her, she felt heartbroken!
Why!
"Say that again!"
Daniel stood up, eyes wide. Even he was surprised.
"Do all you Wilson family people like making others repeat themselves?"
Elsie said coldly. At this point, there was no need for courtesy anymore. She simply spoke with sarcasm.
Clearly, Daniel didn't know what Ronan had said this morning.
But right now, he was shocked that Elsie could say such... such direct and heartless words.
I used to like you... I don't have any illusions about you anymore... What did I do wrong to make you target me like this...
Elsie's words kept repeating in Daniel's mind. His heart, for some reason, felt a tearing pain.
Daniel sat back in his chair, quietly looking at Elsie, his face somewhat pale. He said calmly:
"You know better than anyone what you've done to me."
Then he sighed and waved his hand, signaling Elsie to leave. "Do whatever you want, but remember, you're not allowed to go as a member of the project team."
"Thank you, Mr. Wilson."
Elsie's face lit up with joy. She turned and left, leaving Daniel slumped powerlessly in his chair.
He'd already called Otto several times this morning, but Otto wouldn't answer, clearly not wanting to talk to him directly.
Right now, only Elsie was most familiar with the project. Letting her try might actually work, especially with Rhett helping and speaking up for her. Thinking back to the underground auction half a month ago, Rhett owed Elsie a favor.
Thinking about this, Daniel felt dazed.
Could it be that he was really the one who was wrong?
