Secrets
Lyra walked through the forest, her steps light but her chest heavy. The cool night air did nothing to calm the storm inside her. Every word Dante had said kept repeating in her mind. “Not everyone in your family wants peace.” That had stuck, twisting her stomach into knots.
When she reached the edge of the trees, she saw the faint glow of the streetlights. The city was quiet, too quiet, for her liking. She pulled her hood over her head and slipped through the shadows, heading home.
Inside the house, everything smelled ordinary—food, cleaning supplies, and the faint lavender of her mom’s air freshener. But Lyra didn’t feel ordinary. She dropped her bag, sliding it against the wall. She leaned back against it, closing her eyes.
Damien and Jack were waiting for her. Both looked tense, the way they always did when danger was near. Even without Dante’s words, they could feel something had changed.
“Lyra,” Damien said, his voice quiet, controlled. “Where have you been? You missed training.”
“I had… things to do,” she said carefully, forcing her voice steady.
Jack frowned. “You’ve been acting weird lately. Not like yourself.”
Lyra forced a smile. “I’m fine. Just tired.”
Maya appeared in the doorway, crossing her arms. “Tired of what? The fights? The planning? The constant alert?”
Lyra swallowed, forcing herself to answer. “Everything.”
Maya’s eyes narrowed. “You’re lying.”
“I’m not,” Lyra said softly. She shifted her weight, looking down at her shoes.
Damien’s eyes softened. “If you’re hiding something, Lyra, you know we’ll notice.”
She nodded. “I know.”
Jack shook his head. “You’re not yourself. Tell us.”
Lyra’s heart pounded. Every instinct screamed at her to stay silent, to protect Dante and the secret she carried. But looking at their faces, she felt the sharp sting of guilt.
“I met someone,” she said finally. “Someone important. Someone dangerous.”
Damien straightened. “Who?”
Lyra’s hands trembled slightly. “Dante… Moretti.”
The room went silent. Even Safe, sitting quietly in the corner, blinked slowly.
“Dante?” Jack said finally. “The one who killed… everything? You talked to him? Why?”
Lyra exhaled. “He offered something… a truce. Temporarily. He wants to stop attacking us—for now.”
Maya’s lips pressed into a thin line. “And you believe him?”
“I… I don’t know,” Lyra admitted. “I just… I needed to know. I needed to see him myself.”
Damien’s hands curled into fists. “You went to him alone?”
“I had no choice,” she whispered. “I needed answers before we moved. Before anyone else could get hurt.”
Jack ran a hand through his hair. “You could’ve been killed!”
Lyra swallowed hard. “I know.”
Maya stepped closer. “This isn’t just about you, Lyra. You can’t decide this alone. Any mistake could cost lives.”
“I didn’t make a deal yet,” Lyra said quickly. “I only listened. I only… measured. Nothing else.”
Damien stared at her, his jaw tight. “And you didn’t tell me because…?”
Lyra lowered her eyes. “Because I couldn’t. Not yet. I had to think. I had to be sure I wasn’t falling into another trap.”
Jack shook his head again. “You’re hiding too much. You’re dangerous if you keep secrets.”
Her chest tightened. He was right. Every lie she carried, every half-truth, weighed on her like stones.
“Enough,” Maya said, her voice firm. “We’ll handle this together. No more solo trips. No more secret meetings.”
Lyra nodded. “Okay. I promise.”
But deep down, she knew the truth. The promise wasn’t real. She had already made a choice. One wrong move now, and the group could fall apart. Damien’s trust. Jack’s loyalty. Maya’s guidance. Everything balanced on her decisions.
Later that night, Lyra stayed awake, pacing her room. The moonlight fell across her floor, illuminating her scattered papers and books. She picked up one of her notes, rereading Dante’s words.
“Not everyone in your family wants peace.”
She had brushed them off during the conversation with Damien, but now they gnawed at her mind. Who could he mean? Could anyone in their group betray them? Could someone else be feeding information to Dante?
She shook her head, trying to push the thoughts away.
No. She couldn’t think like that. Not yet. She had to focus.
A knock on her window startled her. Heart racing, she turned to see Safe standing outside.
“Can I come in?” Safe whispered.
Lyra opened the window, letting her friend climb inside. Safe shut the window quietly behind her.
“You look worse than usual,” Safe said softly.
“I met Dante,” Lyra admitted. “I didn’t tell anyone else.”
Safe raised an eyebrow. “You didn’t tell anyone? Why?”
“I needed to see him. I needed to know if what he said was true. And now… I don’t know if I made the right choice.”
Safe stepped closer. “Lyra… you’re making it worse by keeping it to yourself. Secrets like that… they destroy people from the inside.”
“I know,” Lyra whispered. “But if I tell Damien or Maya now, I risk everything. I risk the group.”
Safe nodded slowly. “Then you have to be careful. And you have to watch everyone. Even the people you trust.”
Lyra’s stomach twisted. “Even them?”
Safe’s face stayed serious. “Especially them.”
They stayed in silence for a few moments. The weight of unspoken words pressed down on them.
Finally, Safe spoke again. “Whatever happens, you need a plan. If Dante’s playing games, you can’t be the pawn.”
Lyra nodded, determination building. “I won’t be.”
The next day at school, the tension hung over her like a cloud. She watched Damien, Jack, Maya, Cole, and the others. Their smiles. Their laughs. Their easy chatter. It should have made her feel normal.
Instead, it made her heart ache.
Because she knew a storm was coming, and it would start with her.
Every choice she had made had led them here. Every secret, every hidden truth, every silent action had built this moment.
And soon, everything could crumble.
That night, lying in bed, Lyra stared at the ceiling. The moonlight touched her face. She whispered to herself.
“I have to fix this… before it’s too late.”
But deep down, she knew the truth.
She might be too late already.
The enemy was waiting. And she had already opened the door
A faint sound outside her window made her freeze, and a shadow moved across the wall. Lyra’s breath caught in her throat. Someone was watching. And they knew she was alone.
