Chapter 47 DNA result
Derick’s phone began to ring, disrupting his sleep. He groaned softly as he reached for his phone on the bedside table.
“Hmm.” He moaned, answering without opening his eyes to see who it was.
“Mr. Derick?!” The ear splitting voice of the event planner he has hired hit his eardrums hard, causing him to flinch.
“Maria?” His eyes opened wide as her voice made his slumber disappear in seconds.
“Yes, it’s me. We have finished the preparations. I sent you a picture already. Can you please get back to me on what else you’d love to add?” She explained to him.
“Oh… yes. Of course, I’ll check it out now. Thank you.” He answered, and the very next minute, she hung up.
He let out a sigh and proceeded to check the pictures she had sent. In the picture was the restaurant where Derick saw Carter the very first time.
He had booked this restaurant for a week, so it wasn’t open to anyone because of the things he was trying to put in place before the day of the proposal, which happened to be on Carter's birthday, in two days.
There were balloons, roses, candles surrounding the particular table and chairs that were in the corner where they first got to talk.
A wide smile lit up Derick’s face as a wave of satisfaction ran through him.
“He will be so happy when he sees this.” His thoughts slipped out of his mouth as he stared at the picture, examining everything the details he asked them to add.
Just then, there was a knock on the door, accompanied with the loud ring of his doorbell.
“Carter!” His name rang in Derick’s head as he hurried to the living room to grab the door.
He could feel his excitement was all over his face, and he didn’t want Carter to suspect a thing, so he hastily killed the feeling.
“Welcome back, bab…” Upon opening the door, the word stuck in his throat as he was faced with the cold gazes of his parents. Standing shyly behind them was the girl he once dated.
“Mom? Dad?” He called as confusion set in. ‘Why were they with her? What is she doing here?’
“Are you busy?” His mother asked and didn’t wait to get a response before she walked into the house, pushing Derick out of the way, and pulling his ex with her.
“Mom, what is she doing here?” He asked, stared at them in awe.
His father walked past him quietly and went to stand next to his wife and the girl.
“Sit, Derick.” His father uttered, pointing at the couch.
“I don’t want to. Carter will be here at any time. He shouldn’t meet you here.” He said, looking at the young lady.
She was the reason why Carter left him the second time, and he wasn’t going to let that happen, not when he was planning to take a major step forward in his life in a few days.
“Fine. If you want to hear this standing, no problem.” His father responded, sitting on the couch.
“You remember her, don’t you?” His mother asked, and he scoffed.
“What are you driving at, mom? I am not going to date her or marry her. The only person I want to marry is Carter and no one can change that, not even you.”
“And does that mean you wouldn’t take care of your own child? Are you that heartless?” His mother retorted, angrily pulling out an envelope from her bag.
“What are you talking about? I don’t have a child.”
“Of course, you don’t! You don’t remember sleeping with her?!” She pulled out a piece of paper from the envelope and stretched it towards it.
Derick went mute as he proceeded to read whatever was in the paper. His eyes slowly widened and his heart sank to his belly after seeing what it was.
It was a DNA test saying he was the father.
“This isn’t true. I barely touched her!”
“You did, Derick. That night you were drunk. You lost it and forced yourself on top of me.” Brenda, the young lady answered.
“What?! Are you crazy?! You were the one all over me that night. You forced me to sleep with you, not Vice Versa!” Derick yelled in anger, as he could clearly recall that night.
He knew confidently that he did no such thing.
“I don’t care who got on top of who, but she has a son who is yours, and you have to take responsibility.” His father uttered.
“Isn’t this stupid?! We dated three years ago! And now she’s just coming to say I have a son and bring a DNA paper out of nowhere? Do you think I am that stupid?!” Derick yelled at Brenda, but she didn’t seem to fear.
“After I realized you hated me and would never like me the way I liked you, I decided to leave, not knowing I was with a child. When I found out, I was devastated and didn’t know what to do. I knew you were never going to love me and decided to stay away and raise the child alone.
“But then he turned three and wouldn’t stop asking for his father. I reached out to your parents and they said you have to take responsibility, which is right. So here we are. He isn’t with me because he’s presently in school.
“I’ll bring him to you tomorrow. We can run another test if you think this is forged. But I want you to know that I don’t want to be here, but I have to do this for our son.”
Derick shook his head at all she said. He refused to believe everything she was saying.
“No matter what you say, I am not leaving, Carter. I made this clear before. And you survived raising this child alone for three years, continue doing that!” He retorted without thinking.
“Don’t you dare say that! Whatever is going on with you shouldn’t affect the poor boy! You are our son and we are telling you that you have to take responsibility as his father, and that includes being with his mother too.” His father added.
Before Derick could respond, the door opened and Carter walked in. Everyone looked at him, causing his feet to glue to the ground where he stood.
‘What are they doing here? What is she doing here? What is going on?’ He thought to himself, his gaze moving from one face to another.
“I’m so happy you came back at the right time.” Derick's mother uttered, walking towards Carter.
“Mom, don’t!” Derick ordered, but she ignored him and kept walking towards Carter.
“Carter, don't listen to her!” Derick added, while Carter’s eyes were fixed on his mother who stared at him with hateful looks.
“I'd advise you to leave and never return, young man. This is the best thing I’d say to you as a mother. Derick now has a wife and a son…”
“I don’t have a wife and son, Carter. Please don’t listen to her, okay? I love you and only you.” Derick approached him with the fear of losing him again.
He couldn’t see how he was ever going to survive Carter leaving him again.
Carter clenched his jaws as he stared at both of them. He wasn’t sure what to do or say.
“Oh please, isn’t it better if you tell him the truth now instead of giving him false hope?! Derick has a three year old son with Brenda. I’m sure you know they used to be together.” His mother added.
“There is no place for a faggot in my family, okay? It’s best you leave to save yourself the embarrassment.” Derick’s father added, standing up from the couch.
“Dad, enough! Don’t you dare call him a faggot! You have no right! Please leave! All of you, leave!” Derick yelled, his eyes reddened with anger and his body vibrated beyond control.
At this moment, he was ready to do something really dangerous if they kept speaking awfully to Carter.
With tears heating Carter’s eyes, he turned and walked out of the house without saying a word. His already fragile heart, shattering into uncountable pieces once again.
“Carter! Carter!” Derick yelled in terror, running after him.
