Chapter 10 The hospital
Eight months passed slowly as Aurora’s kept struggling to survive in Arthur’s house every single day.
Though as time passed, she began to get used to how he treated her. He made it hard for her to communicate with him, get close to him or even eat on the same table.
But while Arthur kept trying to make her life miserable, Carter became the friend she never expected to have. Sometimes, he’d sit down next to her and talk to her so she wouldn’t get too lonely.
Carter also hated how his boss treated her like she wasn’t human. Truly, Mr Arthur wasn’t good at keeping relationships, he could at least not always put it to her that she was nothing but a breeder, making her feel less of herself.
Her friendship with Carter grew more and more, and he was the only reason why she could survive until this very day, the day they’d all been waiting for.
A sudden sharp pain gripped Aurora’s lower belly as she headed to the stairs. Her heart began to very fast as the pain wasn’t like the others she often felt sometimes.
This time, it wasn’t stopping, and the pressure she felt was unexplainable.
“Carter!” She cried out as she held onto the railing of the stairs for balance. Water gushed out of her, and she could barely lift her legs without feeling pain.
“Carter!” She cried out again, holding onto her very big belly.
“Miss Aurora?!” Carter answered from the living room. His eyes widened as he saw her from above the stairs.
“He’s coming!” Aurora cried, shaking her head in pain.
Carter ran up the stairs and tried grabbing her, but he wasn’t sure where and how.
“Where…” He fidgeted.
“Help me from the side. It feels like my belly is tearing apart from the inside! I can’t do this!” She mumbled, letting go of the railing so she could sit on the floor, but Carter grabbed her and wrapped her arm around his neck as carefully as he could.
“You can do it! You’re finally going to be free! You can’t give up now, okay?? Now lift your legs, Miss Aurora.” Carter muttered, trying to encourage her physically and emotionally.
“Okay… okay…” Aurora answered, breathing hard.
“One… two… lift.” Carter counted, and Aurora lifted one of her legs, accompanied with a scream of pain.
“Good… you did well. Now, we’re taking the second leg. One… two… lift.” Carter counted and this continued until they got off the stairs.
“I… I need you to call my mom. Tell her to meet me at Arthur’s hospital.” Aurora spoke as she kept panting.
“Okay, but shouldn’t I call Mr. Arthur first?” He asked, and she shook her head, shutting her eyes tightly as they made their way slowly to the door.
“I don’t care if he shows up or not, I just need my Mom, okay?!” She groaned, and Carter nodded.
“Of course. I’ll call her as soon as we get into the car.
They finally got into the car, and Arthur drove out of the compound as fast as he could. Aurora held onto her tummy, staring at it in fear.
Her veins were visible, it was almost as if they were going to burst out. Everything in her told and convinced her she wasn’t going to have one baby, but two.
‘Why would my belly be this big if it was just one in there?’
Getting to the hospital, the nurses immediately attended to Aurora, and they took her into the emergency room.
Carter put a call across to Arthur after calling Aurora’s Mom.
“Mr. Arthur, Miss Aurora is in labor.” Carter uttered, pacing in the hospital hallway.
“Okay. You are at the hospital, right?”
“Yes, we are. Are you coming? I can come and pick you up at the company.”
“No, you don’t have to. I still have some work to finish. I’ll be there before 7 .p.m.”
“Sir?? It’s 2 .p.m. Can’t you come before that time? I believe she needs you here. You are the father of these kids, can you please show up to support her there? It’s the least you could do.”
“Carter, see you at 7.” Arthur uttered coldly and hung up.
‘God! When will he ever learn?’ Carter thought, shaking his head in frustration. He just couldn’t understand why it was so hard for Arthur to do the basic and necessary things just because she was a woman.
He settled on one of the chairs in the hallway, shaking his legs vigorously as he waited in front of Aurora’s ward.
He could hear her screaming and crying from inside the room, and this broke his heart.
‘Why do women have to go through this?’ He wondered, shutting his eyes tightly.
After about an hour, Rachel showed up, running to where Carter sat. Immediately he saw her, he sprang to his feet.
“How is she? Where is she?” Rachel asked, peeping in through the see-through mirror on the ward’s door.
“She’s been in there for an hour now. Does it always take this long?” Carter asked in concern, and Rachel sighed.
“I need you to do something for me, Carter. I need you to go to our house and the baby’s things I kept in the living room. Here is our key. And I’ll send you the address right now.” Rachel uttered, reaching for her phone.
“You’re going to stay with her, right? Mr. Arthur won’t be here until 7.”
“Of course, I’ll be with her, Carter. Now go. We are going to be needing those things.” Rachel retorted, and he nodded, taking long strides away from Rachel.
After he was gone, Racheal breathed out loudly and nodded.
“Let’s do this.”
“She’s in the hospital.” Arthur said, as he went on with his work.
“And you’re still here? You’re supposed to be driving down to that hospital like a madman as we speak!” Derick answered, causing Arthur to scoff.
“I knew she would be going to labor one of these days, so I’m not surprised. Also, it’s one of the best hospitals in the country, the doctor and nurses will take care of her. I don’t need to be there.”
“Of course, you need to be there! She’s delivering your baby.”
“And I’ll be there doing what?”
“Supporting her the little way you can.”
“I don’t have to look into her eyes before I support her. I supported her when I paid her such an amount of money before she even got pregnant.” He answered nonchalantly.
“Gosh… I hate you, Arthur. You can’t keep living like this, you know? That lady has done nothing to deserve this cruelty. She wasn’t the one who hurt you. Treat her right.”
“We are not doing this again, Derick. When I’m done with work. I’ll go and get my baby.” He answered, without even looking up at him.
Arthur parked in front of the hospital as he alighted from his car. Derick also tagged along with him.
Getting into the hospital, he approached the nurses at the reception.
“Hi. I’m here for Aurora Rivers. She was brought into the delivery ward this afternoon, around 2 p.m.” He said to her, and she nodded, running her finger through the large file in front of her.
“I’m sorry, who are you to her?” She asked, raising her head to look at him.
‘Is she new here or what? Why is she asking me such a question?’ He pondered, creasing his brows.
“I’m going to see her.” Arthur answered, walking away from the reception.
“Sir! Sir!” The lady called, running to him.
Just then, a doctor saw what was going on and intervened. “Mr. Arthur, I’m so sorry, she’s a new worker here.”
“I figured. She tries this next time and she goes back to wherever she came from.” Arthur threatened.
“I’m sorry, sir.” She hastily apologized and returned to her duty post.
“Where is Aurora?” He asked again, looking at the doctor.
“She was discharged about an hour ago. You weren’t told?”
“What? What do you mean discharged?” Arthur asked in confusion. ‘Why didn’t Carter fill me in on this?’
“Her delivery went pretty smoothly, so she left with her mother.”
“And the baby? Where is my baby?” Arthur asked with his eyes widened.
“It wasn’t just a baby, Mr. Arthur! Congratulations, sir. She had three babies!” The doctor said with a large smile.
“What? Three? So where are they? I want to see them right now.”
“They left. Aurora took them along with her. How didn’t you know all these?” He asked, and Arthur instantly pulled out his phone.
“She better be at home.” He cursed under his breath as he put a call across to Carter.
“Mr, Arthur.” Carter called, panting heavily.
“Where the hell are you all? I’m at the hospital and I was just told that she had been discharged. Why didn’t you tell me to head home instead?”
“Mr. Arthur, something is wrong.” Carter muttered.
“What do you mean?”
“I was told to grab some things for the baby at Mrs. River’s house. I followed the address she sent to me, and it took me about three hours to get there. I got there and realized I was given a totally different address, and then I headed back home and…”
“Go straight to the point, Carter! Where the hell are you all?”
“I got back to the hospital and was told she was discharged. I came back home to check but… they are not here, sir. I can’t find them anywhere.”
“What?!” Arthur exclaimed, scaring those that were around him.
Instantly, he hung up on Carter and began to call Aurora’s phone, but it kept disconnecting. He tried Rachel’s and it said the number doesn’t exist.
“What the fk is going on?!”
