Chapter 281 Unveiling Shadows

Chapter 281 Unveiling Shadows
Katherine's POV

With each passing minute, my panic intensified. Alexander had gone to meet Selena hours ago, but there was still no word from him.

Despite my repeated calls going straight to voicemail, I paced the hospital room, glancing at Kevin's still form. The knot in my stomach tightened.

Then I remembered I had a genius son, so I called him, briefed him on the situation, and he promptly began investigating.

"Mom?" Ryan's voice came through my phone, interrupting my spiral of worry. "I've been tracking Dad's phone."

I immediately straightened. "What did you find?"

"Dad's location shows he's at the Cascade Hotel," Ryan said, his voice unusually serious even for him. "He's been there for over three hours now."

My heart rate accelerated, but I forced myself to remain calm. "He must be gathering evidence about Selena," I reasoned, though my instincts screamed otherwise. "Ryan, watch your siblings. I'll go check on him."

"Be careful, Mom," Ryan warned. "Selena is dangerous."

"I know, sweetheart. See you." I ended the call.

The Cascade Hotel stood like a gleaming monolith against the darkening Seattle sky. I hurried through the elegant lobby, my mind racing with possibilities, each worse than the last.

At the front desk, I was met with the polite but firm resistance I'd expected.

"I need to know which room Alexander Hudson is in," I said, trying to keep my voice steady.

The receptionist gave me an apologetic smile. "I'm sorry, ma'am. We can't disclose guest information."

"This is an emergency," I insisted, leaning forward. "He's my husband."

"Sorry, we can't—"

"Is there a problem here?" A middle-aged man in an impeccable suit approached, his name tag identifying him as the hotel manager.

I turned to him, desperation evident in my voice. "I need to find Alexander Hudson. It's urgent."

The manager studied me for a moment, recognition dawning in his eyes. "Mrs. Hudson? I thought you looked familiar from the charity gala last month."

Relief washed over me. "Yes, that's right."

He stated "Mr. Hudson arrived several hours ago for a meeting in one of our VIP lounges. He specifically requested privacy."

"Please," I said, my voice barely above a whisper. "I need to see him."

The manager hesitated, then nodded. "Follow me."

He led me through the lobby, past the bar where business executives nursed drinks, and stopped before a door marked "Executive Lounge C."

"He's in here," the manager said quietly. "Would you like me to announce you?"

I shook my head. "No, thank you. I'll take it from here."

As the manager retreated, I stood frozen before the door, my hand hovering over the handle. What would I find on the other side? Alexander in danger? Or something worse—Alexander and Selena together...

I pushed the thought away and took a deep breath. Whatever was happening, I needed to face it. I pushed the door open.

The scene that greeted me was nothing I could have prepared for.

The central table was scattered with evidence—documents, photographs, and a laptop with financial records displayed on the screen. Rather than...

Alexander sat at the table, his jacket discarded, sleeves rolled up to his elbows as he sorted through papers with intense focus.

And in the corner, slumped on a plush sofa, was Selena—unconscious, her normally perfect appearance disheveled, her face unnaturally pale.

"Alexander?" My voice came out as a shocked whisper. "What's going on here?"

Alexander's head snapped up, surprise flashing across his features before he quickly composed himself. "Honey! I..." He glanced at Selena's unconscious form, then back to me. "I'm compiling evidence against Selena. I found something big."

I stepped further into the room, my eyes darting between Alexander and Selena's still form. "She's... unconscious? Alexander, what did you do?"

Alexander rose from his chair and crossed to me, taking my hands in his. His touch was warm, reassuring, but I couldn't shake the unease I felt looking at Selena's limp body.

"When I started feeling strange during our meeting, I knew something was wrong," he explained in a low voice. "I managed to get to the bathroom, splashed cold water on my face, and confronted her. Things got heated, and..." He hesitated. "I had to knock her out to keep her from running. Look at this."

He led me to the table, pointing at the documents spread across it. "Selena's been orchestrating this for years—manipulated financial records, fake identities, offshore accounts. She's deeper in this than we thought."

I felt a wave of relief wash over me. My eyes kept drifting back to Selena. "Where is she now? Is she... okay?"

Alexander nodded. "She's fine, just out for now. I've got Jack and the team on standby to take her into custody. But there's more..."

He moved to a small side table and picked up an ornate box. Opening it, he revealed a bracelet with sapphire stones set in intricate silver work. The chain was engraved with delicate floral patterns that seemed hauntingly familiar.

Alexander's brow furrowed as he held it up. "I found this in her bag. She was clutching it before she passed out, like it was her lifeline."

My breath caught in my throat. I stared at the bracelet, memories flooding back with such force that I had to steady myself against the table.

With trembling hands, I reached into my purse and pulled out a worn photograph—one of the few possessions I'd kept with me through everything. It showed me as a child with my mother, her wrist adorned with an almost identical bracelet.

"This..." My voice shook. "This was my mother's. It went missing after she died. Why does Selena have it?"

Alexander's eyes widened as he looked between the photograph and the bracelet. "She didn't say much before she collapsed, just kept muttering about a 'promise.' Does this mean something to you?"

I traced my finger over my mother's image in the photo, trying to make sense of it all. "Mom gave it to me before she passed. It was a family heirloom." My voice caught. "I thought it was stolen during the move after her funeral. Why is Selena so obsessed with it?"

Alexander opened his mouth to respond when his phone rang. He glanced at the screen. "It's Jack." He answered, putting it on speaker. "Jack, what is it?"

"Sir," Jack's voice came through clearly, tension evident in his tone. "Anthony has regained consciousness. He's demanding to see Katherine—says it's urgent."

Alexander looked at me, his eyes filled with concern and a hint of dread. "Anthony's awake. He wants to see you. I feel like things might be..."

"Connected," I finished for him, tears welling in my eyes as I looked down at my mother's bracelet. "I know."

Alexander reached out, gently brushing a tear from my cheek. "Baby, I'll be with you every step of the way," he promised, his voice soft but determined.

I nodded, drawing strength from his presence. Whatever secrets were about to be revealed, we would face them together.

Alexander said to Jack, "Jack, bring Selena with us. I want her present when we talk to Anthony."

As Alexander gathered the evidence, I found myself drawn to the window. Outside, Seattle's skyline was being swallowed by dark storm clouds, rain now falling in sheets.

"Ready?" Alexander asked, placing a gentle hand on my shoulder.

I turned to face him, our eyes meeting in silent understanding. "As I'll ever be."

We left the VIP lounge together, Alexander's arm protectively around my waist as we made our way to the elevator. In the lobby, we waited while the hotel staff brought Alexander's car around.

"I love you," he said suddenly, his voice low and intense as we stood watching the rain pound against the glass doors.

The simple declaration caught me off guard, making my heart skip. Despite everything—the danger, the uncertainty, the looming confrontation—those three words grounded me.

"I love you too," I replied, meaning it more than ever.

Outside, the rain was intensifying. The hotel staff were ready to give us an umbrella, but Alexander held onto it and embraced me as we got into the car.

Neither of us spoke, each lost in our own thoughts, but the silence wasn't uncomfortable.

My gaze drifted to the photograph in my lap, to my mother's smiling face and the bracelet that had somehow found its way to Selena.

What promise had been made?
