Chapter 31 - A Date
Clara
The gnawing unease I'd woken up with hadn't dissipated, even after a night of what should have been restful sleep. The image from the parking lot seared into my mind and replayed on an endless loop. I knew what I'd seen, even if it defied all logic. No one could convince me otherwise.
Sunlight streamed through my bedroom window, casting a warm glow on the rumpled sheets. I basked in it for a while, trying to shake off the lingering disquiet. Then I heard his voice, smooth as silk, "Good morning, Clara."
My head snapped up. I hadn't heard him enter. Another red flag, perhaps, but the familiar chill of fear was strangely absent.
"Mr. Moonblood," I greeted, my voice steadier than I expected. "Good morning."
He stood at the foot of my bed, the same enigmatic smile playing on his lips. "How are you feeling?"
"It could be better," I retorted, meeting his gaze head-on. "That is, if I knew the truth."
His smile didn't waver. "You wouldn’t let this go, will you?” he asked, amused. “Clara, the truth is a slippery thing. It often depends on one's perspective."
I sat up straighter, clutching the sheets. "I'm not talking about perspectives. I'm talking about what I saw. In the parking lot,. Last night."
A flicker of something—surprise, perhaps, or even amusement—crossed his eyes. "Ah, yes. The parking lot." He paused, as if choosing his words carefully. "Tell me, Clara, what did you see?"
I hesitated, not because I doubted my own memory but because I wasn't sure if I wanted to hear his explanation. But I knew I had to ask. "I saw you..." I swallowed, the words catching in my throat. "You weren't... you were..."
He tilted his head, his expression curious. "Yes, Clara? I wasn't what? I was what?"
I took a deep breath, the words tumbling out in a rush. "You weren't human. You were... something else."
A pregnant silence hung in the air. Then, Mr. Moonblood let out a low chuckle, a sound that sent shivers down my spine. "Something else," he repeated, savoring the words. "An interesting choice of phrase."
He stepped closer, his eyes glinting with an intensity that made my heart pound. "Perhaps you're right, Clara. Perhaps I am something else."
I caught his gaze, my fear giving way to a burning curiosity. "What are you?" I whispered.
The chilling smile that spread across Mr. Moonblood's face sent a shiver down my spine. "That, my dear Clara, is a story for another day." His words hung in the air, heavy with unspoken promises and veiled threats.
I didn't respond, turning away to stare out the window. I closed my eyes, taking a deep breath, and the crisp morning air did little to calm my racing heart. I was no closer to unraveling this man's riddle and enigma than I had been the previous night.
"How about when you're feeling better, we get some dinner?" His voice, smooth as honey, broke the silence. "My treat, of course."
I turned back, and my eyes narrowed. "And why would I do that?"
He shrugged, the picture of nonchalance. "I guess it seems you're curious enough to want to." However, this is only possible if you truly desire it.
His words were a challenge, a dangling carrot. He knew I was dying to understand what I'd seen and who he was. And the thought of dinner with him, a chance to glean more information, was tempting—dangerously so.
"I'll think about it," I replied, my voice carefully neutral.
A spark of amusement flickered in his eyes. "Do that, Clara. But don't think too long. Time, as they say, waits for no one."
He moved towards the door, his footsteps silent on the carpeted floor. At the threshold, he paused, turning back to look at me. "Oh, and Clara?"
My heart pounded as I raised an eyebrow.
"Sweet dreams," he said, a sinister undercurrent in his tone. Then he vanished, leaving me alone with my whirling thoughts and mounting unease.
I knew I shouldn't trust him, and I should run as far away from him as possible. However, I found myself ensnared. My own curiosity and my desperate need to understand held me captive. And deep down, I knew that dinner with Mr. Moonblood was inevitable.
The question was, would I survive it?
A couple of nights later, I found myself agreeing to a dinner date with Alaric—a name he insisted upon, far less formal than the ominous "Mr. Moonblood." The first surprise came when a package arrived at Dana's, all wrapped in fancy paper. Inside, a dress of the softest peach material, ethereal and simple yet undeniably elegant, rested beside a matching pair of shoes and a velvet box that hinted at jewelry.
"Wow, C. That's...just wow," Dana breathed, her eyes wide with astonishment.
I echoed her sentiment, a touch of unease mingling with my surprise. "I know. I didn't know he'd be so...extra."
"And he doesn't disappoint," Dana chuckled, pulling out the velvet box. "He even got you matching shoes, and... is that jewelry?"
"That is too much, don't you think?" I inquired, eyeing the sparkling necklace in the box.
"Not if you have the same amount of money as Mr. Moonblood does," Dana retorted, leaning in conspiratorially. "He's filthy rich, or so I've heard."
The dress, when I tried it on, felt like a second skin, hugging my curves in all the right places. It was modest enough, but it showed just enough skin to be alluring.
"Tasteful," Dana remarked approvingly. "I like it. And it looks good." She paused, her eyes narrowing slightly. "Is it just me, or has your belly gotten...bigger, I guess?"
She didn't need to voice my own fears. I should have been barely showing, a couple of months along at most. But my stomach protruded as if I were well into my second trimester. I hadn't dared voice my concerns to anyone, not even Dana, but the evidence was clear. Something was happening to me—something unnatural.
"Maybe it's just the cut of the dress," I offered weakly, though we both knew it was a lie.
Dana, bless her heart, didn't press the issue. Instead, she helped me accessorize, draping the delicate necklace around my neck and fastening the matching earrings. When I looked in the mirror, I barely recognized myself. I looked elegant and radiant, and for a moment, I almost forgot the growing unease that gnawed at my insides.
But as I stepped out of the apartment, the peach dress swirling around my legs, the feeling returned. This was just another step into Alaric's world, a world of secrets and shadows. And I had a sinking feeling that I was in far deeper than I ever intended to be.
