Chapter 8 : The Scent Of Betrayal
The alarm kept wailing—steady, merciless—but inside the suite, the silence between the brothers was worse. Caspian’s hand was still locked around Kael’s throat, his knuckles bone-white, his eyes glowing a feral, predatory gold.
Kael, pinned against a wall already cracking under the pressure, still managed a razor-sharp smirk.
“You’re vibrating, Caspian,” Kael rasped. “Is the mighty Alpha-heir finally losing control? Or is your wolf admitting that the orphan is the only thing that actually matters?”
“Shut your mouth,” Caspian snarled. The sound rattled through my chest. “Before I rip your tongue out.”
“Enough.”
The word cut through them both.
I stepped forward.
The training Kael had just forced on me—the wall, the emotional suppression—clicked into place. I didn’t scream. I didn’t beg. I stood tall, heart steady, rage cold and sharp.
“Caspian,” I said evenly. “Let him go.”
His head snapped toward me, nostrils flaring. “Stay back, Lyra. This doesn’t concern you.”
“It concerns me when you’re choking the only person who’s actually told me the truth about this house.”
I walked straight into the clash of their Alpha pressure, through winter ozone and cold metal.
“Kael wasn’t claiming me,” I said. “He was helping me. Something you’ve been too busy despising me to do.”
Caspian’s grip loosened—just barely. His gaze searched my face, hunting for fear.
“Helping you?” he demanded. “By putting his scent on you? By touching you in the dark?”
“By teaching me how to hide from you,” I snapped.
Caspian barked out a dark laugh and shoved Kael away. Kael staggered, coughing, then straightened his jacket, eyes gleaming.
“You see, brother?” Kael said hoarsely. “She can hide her fear. Can you?”
“Get out,” Caspian growled. “Before I decide this family has one heir too many.”
Kael looked at me—our pact burning silently between us—then back at Caspian.
“The purge has started,” Kael said. “Father isn’t pretending anymore. Decide fast whose side you’re on.”
He didn’t wait. He turned and left, footsteps swallowed by the alarm’s relentless scream.
Caspian stayed.
His attention locked onto me like a weapon. In three strides, he had me cornered against the bedpost. His palm slammed into the wood beside my head.
“What game is he playing, Lyra?” he hissed. “Tell me what Kael told you.”
“It’s not a game,” I said. “It’s slaughter. Your father is wiping out the Silver bloodlines to seal my territory permanently.”
He sneered. “My father is the law.”
“Then why am I here?” I shot back. “Why the Proximity Rules? Why do you flinch every time you touch me?”
His fingers hovered over the faint silver scar at my collarbone.
“You think this makes you special?” he murmured—and touched it.
The world detonated.
Heat. Agony. Pleasure. My wall shattered. My knees buckled—but Caspian caught me, hand snapping to my neck, pulling me into him.
“You’re shaking,” he said, voice rough.
“Stop,” I gasped.
“Did Kael do this?” he demanded. “Did he make you react like this?”
“No,” I breathed. “He didn’t.”
Caspian froze. The gold in his eyes dimmed, replaced by raw realization.
“You’re afraid of me,” he said quietly.
“I’m afraid of what you’ll do when you learn the truth,” I replied. “I’m afraid of Lord Thorne.”
He turned away.
“Stay here,” he said. “If I catch you with Kael again—”
“Check the sealed archives,” I shouted after him. “Prove me wrong.”
He didn’t answer.
I didn’t stay.
The old Lyra followed rules. The new one followed shadows.
I slipped through the service corridors, reached the library balcony, and watched.
Caspian stood before the iron archive door.
Access granted.
The alarm died.
A crash echoed moments later.
I crept closer.
Inside, the room was chaos. Files everywhere. Caspian hunched over a ledger, flashlight shaking.
“No,” he whispered.
“Silver Inheritance… Subject Lyra… Containment active… Phase Four…”
His fist slammed into the table.
“My entire life,” he choked. “All of it… for a battery?”
The intercom crackled.
“Caspian. Bring the ward to the ritual chamber.”
He turned to me, storm-grey eyes stripped bare.
“You were right.”
“Caspian—”
“He lied to me.”
The footsteps began.
He took my hand.
“We aren’t going to the basement,” he said. “We break the seal. Tonight.”
Lord Thorne’s voice thundered through the vents.
“The crown—or the orphan.”
Caspian stepped in front of me, claws out, eyes blazing.
“I choose the truth.”
The enforcers burst in.
And the war began.
