Chapter 61
Dominique.
I should have known something was wrong when I woke up all smiles and happy. It rarely happened and I should have taken it as a sign that something was about to go terribly wrong but I ignored it. Even though I was a ruthless devil, I deserved some happiness and peace as well and I guess today was my lucky day since karma and mother nature had decided to put me in their good books this time around.
These words were my mantra as I dressed up and got ready for work. Little did I know that I was going to eat those words the moment I stepped into the office. The moment I stopped by my office, I just knew I had fallen into a trap. That dose of happiness in the morning, it was nothing but fake. Nothing but a ruse to blind me from the misfortune that laid in front and by misfortune I met no one other than my uncle. I felt my blood boil as I took him in. I had no idea which infuriated me more, his nonchalant attitude or his stupid sly smirk. In fact, everything about him pissed me off and with the way things went down last time, the last thing I expected was for him to show his face again.
He definitely had nerves and guts, wrapped up and dipped into ap big bowl of audacity, I would give him that. But unfortunately for him, those qualities wouldn't work under my roof. There was none other than me. I was the one who made the rules. I was the one in charge.
*Good morning son.” I cringed at the last word. Even if he were the last man on earth, I would rather be an orphan rather than allow him be my father. Yes, he was that useless and I hated it about him. “ A fine day at the office don't you think?”
“What the fuck are you doing here?” I lst out slowly. I took slow and gentle steps towards him, like a predator approaching his prey. The only difference between us this time was that I couldn't kill him. Yet. Aunt Olivia still meant a lot to me and even though I hated to admit it, his death would definitely affect my sweet aunt. “ Why are you here again? Who gave you the right to show your stupid face in my office?”
“Company.” He corrected. “ And just because you're in charge doesn't mean you're in charge of everything. You're in charge but I still have to drop in my in put …”
“No one asked you.” I cut him off immediately. “ Now leave.”
“No matter how many times you yell at me to do so, it changes nothing.” He was right, so fucking right, it hurt. “I am still a part of this company and the better you admit it, the better for you. For both of us”
“What do you want!” I asked instead. “ This is the last time I'm asking and …”
“Sir? Sir?” Someone's voice reached my ears immediately, cutting me off. Even before I'd set my eyes on her, I already knew who it was and how my brain had already gotten accustomed to her voice and would recognize it anywhere was a mystery to me. “ Sir, are you …”
“Oh .” Florence muttered as she skidded to A halt in front of us. Nervously, she chuckled. “ I didn't know you were busy. I just checked in your office and you weren't there so I figured it mustn't have been long since you left, so I decided to track you down. I can leave if it's not a good time.”
“No, no, no dear.” Uncle Benedict beat me to speaking. If I was being honest, I didn't put much thought into it. But the moment my uncle raked his eyes over Florence, I just knew something was up. I watched as his eyes raked over her from head to toe, before lingering on her chest area. “ You're not disturbing right, son?”
“He was just an unexpected guest.” I responded to Florence instead , making sure she didn't miss the hint in my fone. “ And he was just leaving actually.”
“ I don't think I've seen you before.” Uncle Benedict's audacity was glaring and infuriating at the same time. “ Usually a beautiful face like yours is the first thing potential customers and shareholders should see the moment they step into the office. “
“She's quite alright being my clerk.” I replied. Uncle Benedict's eyes still lingered on her boobs and if I could,I definitely wouldn't hesitate to clasp his hands around my neck and squeeze till every last ounce of life cells in his body had dried up.
“I see. Did she ask to bee your clerk though?” Uncle Benedict's eyes were trained on Florence and from the perverted way he stared at her,bi could already make out the kind of thoughts playing in his head. Dirty, perverted ones I was sure. “ I think you should take up my offer.”
“Um, no I don't…. Awww.* Florence's soft gasp cut through the atmosphere immediately. It took me a while, but my vision clouded red the moment I'd realized uncle Benedict's hand was wrapped around Florence's waist.
She looked uncomfortable as hell and it was in moments like this I wished she was rude like nobody's business.
“Get your hands off her right now or….” Three loud rings cut through my loud monotone. It definitely wasn't mine and It took Benedict a whole three minutes before he picked it up.
“Hello?!” Uncle Benedict's distaste could be felt even in the tone of his voice. “ Who's this?”
“Am I speaking to Benedict?” The voice on the other side of the phone called. “ Olivia's husband?”
“Yes, what is it?”
“It's an emergency. She's in a critical condition right now.”
**************
I thought sitting in the waiting room with both foprence and my uncle would alleviate the pain, perhaps make it a little lighter, but the more I stayed, the more my heartbeat picked up it's pace.
Aunt Olivia never mentioned a thing to me, not once, not even over the phone and yet she was in a critical condition, how?
What was wrong with her? Would she survive? A million and now questions ran in my mind as I felt more and more depressed. The air reeked of broken promises and hopes with a touch of sadness. It was suffocating, but would I leave? No. Not until my aunt was better.
Apparently, I was the only one who bothered about aunt Olivia. While his dearest wide was fighting doe her life in the er, her douche bag of a husband was busy staring at a sad Florence.
Even she didn't see it coming and I could bet she was in the same amount of pain I was in, if not more intense. I watched as she squirmed on her stool from time to time.
Only when I'd glanced at Benedict, did it make Sense. He was a pervert who couldn't control himself for even the tiniest of reasons. I wanted to yell at him, teach him a lesson or two but that would only make more mess and right now, right now, nothing mattered to me than the wellbeing of aunt Olivia.
