Chapter 37 37

Chapter 37 37
Nora’s POV

With my heart still pounding vigorously in my chest, I checked to see if I was being followed.

I watched the guards stroll around as they tried to see if they could spot me. Later, Julian came down as well, looking all angry and pumped. Seeing that I was gone, they slowly returned to the house.

I waited for a few more minutes before I finally stepped out of the bushes. I couldn’t go back to the house and I couldn’t go to my parents' house either. That would be a death sentence. All I had now was Silas. Since my phone was in my room, I couldn’t reach him. All I could do was go to his house.

And so, my journey on foot began because I didn’t have cash to take a cab either. As I walked, I kept glancing back to make sure I was alone. The last thing I wanted was to be taken off the streets by Julian’s guards.

The walk to Silas's house was a very long one. It took me about fifty long minutes to get to his place. By the time I arrived, I was tired, sweating, and drained. My feet hurt like crazy, but I was consoled by the thought of Silas seeing me.

By now, it was already nighttime.

When I got to his apartment, I noticed another car was parked in his lot, but I didn’t think much of it. All I wanted was his kind words and shelter so I could start to figure out my life as Julian hopefully processed the divorce papers.

I walked to his door and knocked, but nobody answered.

“Silas?” I called out as I pounded on the door again. Still, there was no response.

I raised my hand to knock again, but then I heard someone start to unlock the door from the inside. Relief flooded through me as I calmed down immediately, my stress long forgotten. A smile appeared on my face as I waited for the door to open.

The door opened to reveal a lady who was wearing a t-shirt I could bet belonged to Silas. My smile waned.

“What do you want?” she asked, looking me over.

“Who are you?” I returned, irked by her confident stance. She acted like it was her house.

“I should be the one asking,” she returned, irritation crossing her features. “Do you need anything?”

“Where is Silas? I want to see him,” I said.

“And you are?” she returned.

“Baby, who is that?” I heard Silas call out to the lady and my blood ran cold. Baby?

“I don’t know. It seems she’s lost or something,” the lady replied. Silas soon walked out and wrapped his arms around her before looking outside.

Our eyes met. Mine were filled with shock and betrayal while his were filled with attitude and nonchalance.

“Silas…” I whispered, taking a small step back. What the hell was going on?

“Baby, do you know her?” I heard the lady ask, but Silas shook his head, making the aching in my heart intensify.

“I don’t know her,” he said as he placed a small kiss on her head. “Who are you?” he said, turning his attention to me.

Tears swelled in my eyes as I realized he was denying me in front of another woman. I was going through all this stress for him, and for what?

“Silas, how could you do this to me?” I asked, my voice trembling slightly as I tried to stop my tears from falling.

“What? Sorry, you have the wrong house,” Silas said.

Seeing his innocent look ignited anger inside me. How could he keep treating me like trash?

“How dare you lie to my very face!” I spat, my temper rising. “After everything I’ve done for you, you keep cheating? Is this the reward I get for putting you first?” I asked. Now, my tears were dropping.

“What the hell is going on?” the lady asked as she started to get suspicious.

“You know what? Give me a moment with her,” he said.

“Are you sure that’s a good idea?” she asked, casting a worried glance my way.

“Yes, baby. Just give me a moment, I’ll be right by your side,” he said.

I watched in agony as they shared a kiss before she went into the house. Silas stepped out and closed the door. Only then did his true expression show.

“What the fuck were you thinking by coming to my house uninvited?” he asked, anger flooding his expression.

“What? Last time I checked, I had every right to come here no matter when I chose. How dare you?” I snapped as I angrily wiped my falling tears away.

“Don’t you fucking use that tone on me,” he snapped like I was overreacting. “Why are you here?”

“Because you’re my boyfriend and I need you!” I yelled in his face.

“But why? You have no business coming to my house at this hour of the day,” he said and crossed his arms.

I gasped, unable to believe the same person who had been sweet-talking me on the phone all week was the same person treating me like a total stranger.

“Are you seriously saying this to me? Who is she?”

“She’s no one. You don’t have to worry about her,” he said, brushing my words off. “Did you bring the money?” he finished.

“No! I already told you that I don’t have money!” I yelled as my tears continued falling. I never could have thought Silas would break my heart twice in a row.

At my words, his expression turned cold.

“So you come here without the money I asked for? What exactly do you want here? I thought we had a deal.”

Deal?

“What deal? Is our love transactional?” I couldn’t believe my ears.

“I’m sorry, I have to go back inside. If you’re not here to make my life easier, then I am afraid I have nothing to do with you.”

Before I could talk, he was already back in the house and, with a hard push, he slammed the door shut right in my face.

It felt like my heart stopped working for a second. I hunched over as my heart squeezed painfully. Hot tears clouded my vision, yet I couldn’t utter a word.

“Baby, don’t you trust me anymore? She’s someone I used to know,” I heard Silas say from inside.

I collapsed to the ground as I fought to breathe. Silas. I gave everything up for him and he trampled upon my heart without remorse.

Soon after, I heard their laughter and I didn’t need to be told that I had been played again.
