Episode 185 - The End of the Adventure
She tilted her head back and let her arms fall to her sides, a macabre smile spreading across her face.
Mixxi - It doesn't matter... I have more containers here.
Then, the creatures that had been on the ground began to emerge, even more menacing. The ground split open, black veins spurting outward as the abominations rose. Their bodies were twisted, half-formed, stitched together with fragments of memory and flesh. They were deforming in ways I couldn't even describe.
Tobias - Containers… he means us. He's using the star to forge vessels with everything we've lost.
Joe's flames ignited, but an unnatural wind deflected them to the side, sucking them into the crevice. He clenched his jaw, fury blazing in his eyes.
Joe - Shit, he left us with nothing. And now…
Luke staggered forward, fragments of his pendant glowing faintly in his palm.
Luke - No… he's trying to replace Elowen. Build an army of shells.
Mixxi's laughter echoed, harsh and triumphant.
Mixxi - Every soul you've wept for, every bond you've cherished, is now mine. My vessels. My soldiers.
The creatures shrieked, clawing their way through, their forms shifting between familiar and unfamiliar faces. The sight churned my stomach, but the inner chill calmed my breathing.
Ness - No. They're not yours. They're echoes. And echoes can be shattered.
I raised my hand, frost erupting outward, enveloping the nearest creature, seizing its face. Its borrowed face flickered once, then shattered. The others roared, furious, but I stood firm. Behind me, Tobias raised his arm, engulfed in flames of light, Joe's flames ignited into a lightsaber once more, and Luke's eyes glowed with the most intense blue I'd ever seen. Together, we faced Mixxi's container army.
The container army surged forward, shrieking with voices that weren't their own. Their faces shifted between Elowen, Mercavian, our parents, and other Regumnians we vaguely recognized, each echo twisting the knife even further. But we didn't falter. Joe's sword sliced through the first wave, each blow burning away the shadows until nothing but ash remained. Tobias's flames spread as he battered them down as they approached, obliterating every shadow. Luke's eyes moved with intensity, focused, scattering blue beams that pierced the creatures' cores, unraveling them from within. And I, my frost spread across the battlefield, freezing the black veins that connected them to the Mixxi. One by one, the containers shattered, their borrowed faces dissolving into nothingness. Mixxi faltered, her smile wavering.
Mixxi - No... this isn't how it ends. You can't destroy what I've created.
The star pulsed powerfully, its waves illuminating the entire field. The remaining creatures bowed their heads before its power. Its presence. Mixxi threw back his head, arms outstretched, as if welcoming it.
Mixxi - If the containers fail, I will be the vein. I will be the bridge.
His body swelled, shadows creeping up his neck, his eyes burning with black fire. The star's pull intensified, drawing him closer, feeding on his arrogance.
Luke - He's binding himself to it. He thinks he can control it.
Ness - No… he's wrong. The star doesn't play by anyone's rules…
Mixxi's laughter echoed, clipped and triumphant. But then, he faltered. The black veins that had coursed through his arms began to sink deeper, plunging into his chest. His smile twisted into a grimace.
Mixxi - Wait… no. I am your master. I am…
The star roared, a sound like the tearing apart of worlds. Its waves rose, drawing her in completely. Her scream was cut short as her body dissolved into shadow, consumed by the very power she sought to control. The moment she made direct contact with the star, she vanished entirely. The rift above convulsed, its edges fracturing. Light and darkness collided, exploding outward in a storm of energy. The sky shattered, and then... it began to snow. It wasn't ordinary snow. Each flake glittered with fragments of light, shimmering faintly as it touched the ground. Everything happened so fast we barely had time to react. I stretched out my hand; it was the first time in my life I'd ever seen snow.
I turned to look at the star in front of us. It had a kind of invisible barrier above it, preventing the snow from touching it, while all around it, on the ground, lay ashes. Ashes from Mixxi's body. I took a step forward, but the forest around us changed. Its colors faded; it was no longer completely dark and began to turn a beautiful pale white. The blackened trees became silver, and the shadows dissolved into shades of green and gold.
I staggered, my scar cooled, the frost inside me calmed. As if knowing I could rest for now.
Joe lowered his sword, burst into flames, and vanished once more. Tobias's flames subsided, leaving only a faint glow. Luke clung to the last fragment of his pendant, his gaze fixed on the falling snow. The ground trembled once more, but this time it wasn't destruction, but liberation. The forest dissolved around us, the void collapsing inward. When the snow thickened, we were no longer in that cursed place. The star was no longer there; we were simply in the middle of a forest with a snowfall more unexpected than rain in summer. We stood on a hill overlooking Regum. The kingdom stretched out before us, bathed in a soft light and falling snowflakes. The rivers sparkled, the towers stood proud, and the scars of war seemed distant, softened by the snow that still fell gently from the sky.
For a long moment, none of us spoke. We simply stood there, breathing, watching, alive. Gazing toward our destiny.
Tobias - We've returned.
Joe - Perhaps Regum will finally have a chance... Though we'll have to accept our roles.
Luke's gaze settled on the horizon, his voice calm but firm.
Luke - We've lost so much. Mercavian. Elowen. But perhaps... this is the beginning of something new.
I closed my eyes; the frost within me subsided. The prophecy had spoken of sacrifice, of loss, of restored balance. And now, as the snow fell upon Regum, I realized: we had paid the price. But we had also earned the right to live.
Ness - This is our world now. Our life. And whatever happens... we will face it together.
I looked to my left, and Tobias was surprisingly smiling. He turned to me and hugged me around the waist, lifted me up, and carried me, just like in the early days in Regum, like when he felt he had to carry me everywhere. We laughed. I put my hands around his neck, while Luke and Joe moved closer to us. It was just the four of us. Looking down from above at the kingdom that was our destiny to change. The wind carried the snow across the kingdom; each flake was a reminder of what we had endured and overcome. The forbidden forest vanished, the bridge destroyed, and Mixxi, consumed by her own ambition.
And as the wind carried the snow across Regum, each flake a reminder of the truth:
We were no longer trapped.
We were home, in the world we were meant to save.
