Chapter 37 Don’t want to fight her
“The bond,” I rasped. “Whether you see it or not.” My voice strained as I forced breath into my lungs.
Renee scoffed. "Don't play dumb, omega." She roared. "I was supposed to be Luna, and you know it." She didn’t even try to hide her disdain.
"But you just his, slut." Renee rolled her eyes when I spoke that. "Just because you're his wife and his mate doesn't mean he doesn't still want me."
Renee bit her lip as if savoring every word she was about to unleash. "He still begs for my love, my affection, my touch-" She lingered. "An omega doesn't mean anything to us."
"I mean, come on." Renee breathed harshly, her nose wrinkling as if my existence was an offense.. "Do you really think this pack would love a low-life wolf like you?"
My wolf woke in fury, protesting the thought of sharing her mate with this woman.
Yes Renee was gorgeous. The way her hair bounced, the plumpness of her lips, the curves of her body. The black ink of this pack tattoo runs down her arm. Leander would love someone like this by his side.
Maybe that was the point.
Maybe that was why she wanted me gone so badly.
"Xavier will never love you," Renee whispered. "You're a fool if you think he ever did or ever will."
That was the last thread.
My wolf rushed forward, clearing the cloud that had haunted my senses. Power surged through my limbs. I twisted my hips and drove my fist upward with everything I had. My knuckles connected with Renee's mouth in a satisfying crunch. Her head snapped to the side, and blood immediately spurted from her split lip, spattering across both of us.
She rolled off me with a yelp, one hand flying to her bleeding mouth. "You little-"
I didn't let her finish. I rolled with her momentum, my body moving on pure instinct. I drew my fist back and slammed it into the same spot, feeling her tooth give way beneath my knuckles. The impact sent her sprawling backward onto her butt, her arms flailing for balance.
"Fucking-"
She reached out with her bloody hand, trying to grab at my shirt, but I was faster. I caught her wrist mid-air and twisted it sharply, wrenching her arm at an unnatural angle. The joints cracked audibly.
"Ah!" Renee screamed in pain, her face contorting as she felt the strain in her shoulder. Her complexion flushed from exertion and rage.
Before she could recover, I threw my leg over her body, straddling her torso. My knees dug into her ribs, pinning her beneath the complete opposite of a moment ago when she'd had me at her mercy.
"Ugh!" She squealed, her movements becoming frantic. She looked down at her outfit, now streaked with dirt and blood. "I just got this set and now it's all dirty!"
My hand shot forward and wrapped around her throat, my fingers finding purchase on either side of her windpipe. Renee's eyes flew open in shock, her pupils dilating. I squeezed, feeling her pulse hammering frantically beneath my palm. Her face slowly transformed from angry red to oxygen-deprived white as she struggled to draw breath.
"Tap out, Renee!" one of the men from the crowd shouted. "Tap out! that bitch might kill you"
A few pack members peered over shoulders, others whispering like they’d just witnessed something forbidden. Some gasped.
Renee's hands flew up to my forearm, her nails scraping against my skin as she tried desperately to pry my fingers loose. Her legs kicked and thrashed underneath my body, her heels digging trenches in the dirt.
A series of black storm clouds rolled in above us, moving impossibly fast and darkening the once-sunny afternoon sky. The crowd looked up in awe, their attention torn from the fight.
"What the-"
Then it poured.
"My hair!" a woman screamed, the first to scatter from the crowd.
The crowd bubbled with confusion. "Where did that storm come from?"
The rain continued, soon turning into a hailstorm. A flash of lightning struck down on the gravel stone next to Renee's wet hair with an ear-splitting crack.
Renee's eyes widened in fear at the loud strike, the white light reflecting in her terrified gaze. The lava and fire that had once lined the property of the Leander's mansion dimmed under the torrent of rain.
"It's a thunderstorm!" The man who'd read us the rules panicked. "Everyone, go back to your houses!"
The crowd quickly scattered, their screams of terror loud as more bolts of electricity struck the rocks beside them, nearly killing them.
Renee's blood washed from her broken jaw down a newly formed stream, the water turning pink as it rushed past us.
I looked around, my grip loosening in my confusion. How did this happen? Did I do this? I couldn't have made a storm so big. Did we annoy the moon Goddess by fighting.
"We are still fighting bitch", Renee's voice snapped me back to reality.
She took advantage of my shock, her hands finding my shoulders and using every ounce of her remaining strength to buck her hips and roll me sideways. My back hit the mud with a wet slap as she scrambled on top of me, reversing our positions once more. Her eyes were bright red, glowing with predatory hunger and one singular focus.
My blood.
Renee grabbed my wrist and slammed it into the mud with brutal force, grinding it down into the wet earth. Rain streamed down both our faces as she reached behind her back with her free hand. When it returned, she clutched a sharp steel knife, its blade gleaming even
in the dim storm light. The metal was covered in-
Silver.
Renee smiled through her broken, bloody teeth as crimson continued to drip from her mouth and spatter onto my chest. I looked around in a panic, my head whipping from side to side, somehow hoping deep inside that the man who'd read the rules was still here.
Or even Lyra, or maybe even another wolf.
But there was no one in sight. Just rain, mud, and the two of us.
"If you don't die, I don't get to be Luna," Renee gripped the handle with white knuckles, positioning the blade directly above my pinned hand. "You have to die, Amara. You have to!"
I struggled beneath her, my free hand pushing against I struggled beneath her, my free hand pushing against her shoulder, trying to throw her off balance. But she had her full weight pressed down. I watched in horror as the silver blade descended slowly toward my palm.
"Leander is mine," she seethed, her voice trembling. She gulped, and I realized she was nervous-terrified even. "We won't let a fucking omega like you come and mess everything up!"
"You don't have to...""I won't let you win
That's when my wolf took over. This time, there was no hesitation. No breath between human and wolf. It hit like an explosion, my muscles tightened, my vision sharpened, my heartbeat synced with the thunder.
Everything slowed.
Renee’s breath shook. Her eyes widened.
And my wolf rose.
My hand shot upward. I grabbed her wrist mid-strike and forced it sideways. The knife plunged into the mud, missing my hand by inches. She tried to recover, but I was already moving. I twisted my hips, bucking her off me, rolling to the side as she slipped in the mud and nearly lost her grip on the knife.
I didn’t wait.
I lunged not to kill, not to maim, just to stop her.
We collided, crashing through mud and hail and fury. She screamed, swinging wildly, but my wolf saw every movement before it happened.
Lightning cracked again then I sat on top of her again but before I could do anything at her, I heard movements.
Our wolves instantly froze, spine bowing in instinctive submission before we could even see him.
Xavier.
"I want you to go to your rooms right now", He growled in his Alpha voice and we both stood up without questioning him.
