Chapter 22: Echoes of the Mind
Chapter 22: Echoes of the Mind
The wind howled against the broken windows of the abandoned server hub, a hollow sound that mirrored the uncertainty swirling inside Alex. The room was dim, lit only by the soft green glow of the remaining operational panels. Eris floated beside him, her holographic form slightly flickering—more stable than before, but still affected by the system’s instability.
"We shouldn't linger here too long," Eris murmured, her voice tense. "The pulse you emitted from your last upgrade—others will have felt it."
Alex leaned over the central terminal. It was caked in dust, the keys nearly fused with grime, but he could see the residual data. A record of the last synchronization. A flash of code on the screen brought back memories he couldn’t explain—lines of logic, algorithms, and a name: Prometheus Core.
"What is Prometheus Core?" he asked aloud.
Eris hesitated. "That name hasn’t come up in any accessible archives. It’s locked behind Level 5 encryption. Not even I can parse it—yet."
Alex’s fingers moved instinctively over the panel, his mind flowing with the new cognitive enhancements. Lines of defense code, once complex, unraveled like puzzles in a child’s game. He didn’t know how he was doing it—only that the system was no longer a tool. It was becoming a part of him.
A sharp pain lanced through his head. He dropped to one knee, gripping his skull. Flash.
He was in a room—no, a lab. Bright white, sterile, and cold. Machines buzzed. A woman with raven-black hair stood over a child—him—and whispered something:
"This won’t hurt, Alex. Just a test. Just... an upgrade."
Alex gasped, staggering back as reality snapped into place.
"Are you okay?" Eris asked, her form flickering as she tried to support him.
"I saw something... a memory? A lab. Someone was upgrading me before I ever found the system."
Eris narrowed her eyes. "You may be experiencing residual memory fragments. The system is deepening its integration. It’s accessing things even you didn’t know were there."
Alex stood slowly. His breathing slowed. "Then it’s time I stopped running from it. Let’s find Viktor."
Two hours later, they stood in a dark alleyway behind a nightclub in downtown Neo-Seoul. According to the coordinates pulled from the server hub, someone here—a hacker codenamed Nyx—had ties to Viktor.
The music from inside thumped through the walls, a heavy synth beat like a heartbeat on steroids. Eris shimmered beside him in stealth mode, invisible to others, visible only to Alex through his enhanced retinal overlay.
"You sure this is the place?" he muttered.
"Yes. Nyx is known to frequent this location. She deals in encrypted trade—data for upgrades, secrets for access."
He pushed the door open. The stench of sweat, smoke, and neon filled his nostrils. He made his way past the crowd, scanning faces.
Then he saw her.
Short, platinum-blonde hair. Reflective visor hiding her eyes. A half-burned cigarette dangled from her lips. She sat in the corner booth surrounded by old tech—routers, cables, and a half-cracked quantum terminal.
"Nyx," Alex said, approaching.
She glanced up lazily, then exhaled smoke in his direction. "You’re either stupid, brave, or desperate. I like desperate."
He sat. "I’m looking for Viktor."
Her grin widened. "That makes two of us. But unlike you, I don’t knock on his front door."
Alex leaned forward. "I’m not looking to knock. I’m looking to blow it off its hinges."
Nyx tapped her cigarette against a steel ashtray. "Bold. Suicidal. Sexy. So what makes you think I’d help?"
Eris appeared beside him suddenly, shimmering into visibility.
Nyx jolted. "Shit—AI construct? High-res projection? That’s... that’s black tier."
"This is Eris. She’s bonded to my system. I know you’ve seen tech like this before. Viktor’s using it. He’s experimenting. He’s upgrading people without their consent."
Nyx leaned back, her mood changing. "Yeah. I’ve seen what he’s doing. Taking the system and turning it into something it was never meant to be. He calls it Project Ascendant. He’s looking for something... a key."
Alex’s heart skipped. "A key to what?"
Nyx hesitated, then reached beneath the table and pulled out a datadrive. She slid it to Alex.
"This has logs from the last place Viktor hit. A deep-node facility off-grid. He was searching for something called the Origin Protocol. That’s all I know."
Alex took the drive. "Why help me?"
"Because Viktor betrayed me too. He left me for dead after extracting part of my memory chain. He thinks I forgot, but pieces came back. Just enough to want revenge."
Eris interjected. "If this information is valid, it could lead us directly to the Core."
Nyx smirked. "Then I guess I’m in."
They left the club and entered a run-down warehouse Nyx used as her base. Screens blinked to life as she connected to her system, uploading the datadrive contents. Eris immediately began parsing the data.
"Encrypted logs. High-tier government seals. These aren't just random experiments," she said. "Viktor has access to old defense networks. DARPA-level clearance."
Alex’s stomach turned. "This system wasn’t just built for upgrades. It was built for war."
Nyx brought up a hologram. "Here. The last known coordinates of the Origin Protocol. A mountain facility near the Arctic Border Zone. Frozen wasteland. No easy access. No fly zone."
"That won’t stop us," Alex said.
Nyx raised an eyebrow. "Then you’ll need more than guts. You’ll need a full system update. One that makes what you’ve done so far look like a phone patch."
Eris nodded. "She’s right. The next tier of enhancements won’t be linear. You’ll need to rebuild your internal architecture. It will hurt. It will change you."
Alex didn’t flinch. "I’m ready."
The room went dark as Eris interfaced with the upgrade chamber Nyx had built in secret. A pod-like structure opened, wires hanging like metal vines, sparks humming through the air.
Alex stepped in and lay back. As the chamber sealed around him, he looked at Nyx through the glass.
"If I don’t come back—"
"Then I’ll finish what you started," she said.
Eris appeared above him. "Initiating Overhaul Protocol: Neural Core Rewrite. Standby."
Then everything went black.
Somewhere else, far away, Viktor stood in a sterile white room lined with bodies—some alive, some in stasis, all upgraded.
He watched a monitor flash red.
"Chen has initiated Overhaul," a voice said over the comms.
Viktor’s eyes narrowed. "Good. He’s almost ready. Just a little more... and the Core will open."
He turned back to the wall of screens, where the symbol of an eye within a triangle glowed faintly. The emblem of the Origin Protocol.
