Chapter 19 19: she's allergic to horses!
Chapter 19 19 SAVED
SORAYA
All I had to do in this school, was kil the prince and get on with my life as a wolf hunter alongside my mother. How the hell did I end up playing detective, being a murder suspect,, getting to represent the school in a deadly competition, and now—being chased by a wolf that seemed to have lost its mind?
If you asked me those questions, I'd be as confused as you are.
I grabbed Adele's hand because she was slowing down our pace as we ran, and pushed her into the broom closet I found, pulling the doors shut and holding it.
"That wolf is moon mad, did you see the eyes?" She whispered, I could feel her heartbeat as we huddled together.
"Yeah I know obviously. That's why I said to run Adele," I deadpanned, closing my hands as I held on to the door tightly.
I had read about moon mad wolves in my training with mother. They were wolves that had gone rouge, and we're unable to shift to their human form. They were deadly, and it was best to stay away from them.
But how the hell had a moon-mad wolf gotten into the school library? According to every record, they were supposed to remain in the woods—drawn to the wild, not wandering into populated buildings.
A low growl rolled through the library, closer this time, rattling my bones.
I held my breath, every muscle locking as my grip tightened on the door.
Adele squeezed my hands so tightly I thought she'd break a bone. The growls deepened, vibrating through the wood like thunder crawling on all fours.
"I don't want to die in a closet," Adele whimpered, her voice trembling so badly.
"Then keep quiet, Adele," I hissed.
The wolfs shadow passed under the slit if light beneath the door, and just like that a heavy this hit the door. Both of us froze.
A second thud. This time even more louder than the last.
"Oh heavens," Adele mouthed, I could hear the tears in her voice. I wished I had a freaking sword in my belt, but there was nothing my little pocket knife was going to do against a wolf, more or less a moon-mad one.
At this point, we were cooked if no miracle happened, but then I knew I had to take the risk. I was the trained on here, there was little to nothing Adele could offer except her fear in this situation.
I braced myself, pressing Adele's back gently. "If it breaks the door," I began. "Don't freeze, just run. You hear me?"
Her eyes shone with tears. "But..."
Another thud.
"Just do as I freaking say, Adele!"
There was another push, much more harder this time, causing the hinges to rattle. The wolf snarled louder, and then suddenly a noise echoed from the far end of the library—a crash—like something or someone was toppling an entire shelf.
Then I heard a loud howl, and then silence.
Someone had come to save us.
I exhaled shakily as the door to the closet was jerked open, revealing who I least expected but yet was grateful to see.
My smirk was the first thing that greeted Daryl. "You didn't want a nameless wolf do the job for you now, did you? I thought you wanted to get rid of me."
Daryl's gaze was far from the teasing of mine. Blood dropped from his fingers as he stared at me, and that stare enough made my stomach heat up. Adele clung to me, too scared to even look at the mess below, her head was buried on my chest.
"I want to go home," Adele whimpered.
Daryl said nothing, his eyes stayed locked on mine.
Not Adele.
Not the shattered shelf behind him.
Not the unconscious moon mad wolf sprawled on the floor with a dagger stick to it's neck.
Me.
It should have annoyed me. Perhaps it did a little, but there was something else I felt. Something much more ferocious.
I cleared my throat, and scoffed. "Why are you quiet? Did killing the wolf make you lose more brain cells than usual?"
He inhaled sharply. "You could have died, Soraya."
I blinked, thrown off balance for a fraction of a second, then I smirked. "Isn't that what you want, your Highness? Why you speaking like you care now?"
"I don't!" He shot back instantly. The lie shimmered between us. Tension sizzling.
Adele raised her head, looking between us like she was watching two storms collide.
"I—um—I'll get help." She stammered, and before I could stop her, she bolted out, practically tripping over her own feet.
Now it was just Daryl and me. Great.
"You're bleeding," I said, before my brain could stop my mouth. Why the heck did I even care?
"It's nothing."
"It doesn't look like nothing."
"Soraya..." My name slipped from his lips like a warning or a plea—perhaps both.
He looked furious and shaken. The gold of his eyes seemed to glow differently, like molten lava.
"How did you know to come here?" I asked, lowering my voice.
He clenched his jaw. "I couldn't find you."
"So?"
"So I looked for you."
My breath caught, before I masked it with a scoff. "So now you're stalking me?"
"You are my companion! If I hadn't..." He hissed, voice sharp, "you'd be wolf toast by now! Dead in a fucking broom closet."
I crossed my arms in defiance. "I was handling it."
"You were trapped," He snapped, getting closer, heat radiating off him like furnace. "You were one hit away from that door getting broken!"
"And what?" I said, lifting my chin, "you'll be mad if I died?"
A low growl emanated from Daryl's chest as he stepped closer again, and just before I could say something else, he grabbed me by my neck. "Stop talking Soraya." He breathed.
My breath hitched. "And if I don't."
Without asking, he crashed his lips on mine.
