Chapter Eighteen

Chapter Eighteen
Later that day I headed to my first class which was said to be Science. One of my favourites. I always felt so fascinated by Science because the feeling of mixing unusual chemicals together was endless mysteries. Sure, so many people found this subject boring but, for some odd reason Scientific findings always spiked by interest and I found myself considering to be a vet with all the knowledge I had obtained. Since passing my science exams in GCSE and getting straight A's, I felt myself taking a scientific interest in the illness of animals and how I could potentially cure a lot of them. The feeling of saving poor, helpless creatures would make me feel like I had a purpose in life. Aside from just loving Mason, which was most definitely out of the question despite my recent findings of my Mother's terrible secret.
Has my Father gone home and yelled at her about telling me? I hope he isn't angry with her, I would absolutely hate being the cause of a break up between them. My Father had always been so short tempered and so poor at understanding the reasons behind drastic actions. The choices my Mother had made to tell me obviously did not sit well with him, but telling him felt like the best thing to do. My Mother would be digging herself a very deep grave if she started keeping small secrets from my Father as well, trying to pretend I still don't know the truth. The thought of having to play pretence with him just did not sit well. Maybe I'm too honest and thoughtful. Maybe I'm too kind. Still. I believe it was within my best interests. All of ours. It would be such an endless road if we all kept up this game of secrecy, never looking back, never considering what could come of the truth which just might bring some happiness for Mason.
Mason had always been unsure of himself. Maybe, just maybe this would be the answer. If he finds out the truth, he could find out who he really is, where he really comes from. This might be his saviour, this terrible but wonderful truth. In this moment of deep thought, I began to consider that maybe there are things beyond our comprehension. Mason would be able to fulfil his purpose in life by finding out who he really is, who his real parents could be. Is his parents still alive even? Have they died? Oh my, I hope his parents didn't die. If I told him the truth and he finds out they are dead, maybe that would make him worse. Maybe it wouldn't help at all. Although, I wouldn't know unless I took the chance.
"Hey girl!" A thick voice yells, rattling my bones and breaking my train of thought.
"What?" I respond, a little dazed to my surroundings. When I look to my left, I see a girl with long blue hair and thick black eyeliner slapped around her eyes. She seems like the goth type of people.
"Are you in this class?" She says with impatience evident in her voice. I glance down at my timetable on my iPhone, checking. "Umm, my room is 'Science' D23."
"This one. Now, come in." She says arrogantly, tapping the worn out wooden down with her long black painted finger nails. I nod at her and follow her in, despite the slight annoyance rising within me towards her bossiness that she is presenting before me. Immediately, I feel a pure dislike emotion for this girl.
"You a nerd too then?" She asks bluntly, stopping at the front of the lecture room. I look around and spot so many potion bottles arranged on a variety of tables with textbooks next to each one. The sight of it overwhelms me a little and I have to blink a few times, looking back towards her. "Y-yeah. I guess you could say that."
"Me too. Fortunately for the poor souls that walk this earth." She smirks, holding out her skeleton-like hand out for me to shake. "I'm Rochelle. You are?"
I take her skinny hand into mine, near enough feeling the curves of her boney palm and knuckles. She feels so cold, like a dead corpse, her veins seeping through her pale looking skin. "I'm Alana."
"Alana, huh? Fits. You seem more like a pretty, butter-like girl."
"A butter-like girl?" I say as she lets my hand drop from hers. Her lip turns up into a smirk.
"Yeah. It's a term for 'a girl who can just be stuck anywhere just to look fancy and pretty. And smiles like butter wouldn't melt. Innocent looking, I guess." She shrugs, pulling out a packet of ciggarettes from her back jean pocket. "Want one?"
"O-oh no thanks. I don't smoke."
"Fair enough," She says in a muffled tone, sticking a cancer stick in between her thin pale pink lips. It lights from the burning flame of his black lighter. "So, you met anyone else yet from here?"
"Well kinda yeah. I met a blonde haired boy who lives in the same student apartment blocks as me."
"Blonde hair, huh? Is he like super awkward and stands funny?"
"Yes! His name was George. You know him?" I exclaim, watching her as she blows out smoke from her cancer stick.
"Thought so. He's the only blonde boy who lives in that student block. Most of them in there are girls and rest of the boys there have dark hair. George sticks out like a sore thumb." She says, exhaling more smoke, trying to make a circle into the air. Something tells me that she isn't too find on George, although I found him enormously sweet despite his awkward body language. He was the ideal sweet boy I would dream of being close friends with.
"You don't like him then?" I ask, setting my bag down on one of the tables.
"It's not that I don't like him. He's just labelled as a weirdo here. He doesn't talk much apart from two boys in this class who are super geeky."
"Are YOU not geeky, you're taking the Science course aren't you not?"
"I'm taking this course. I'm not as nerdy as the majority of the class." She gestures to her clothing, and I let out a soft giggle, showing my agreement. I cannot say I like her as instantly as what I grew to like George but she doesn't seem as bad as what she did a few minutes ago. She must clearly be use to being in charge, and leading a situation.
"You been studying Science long?"
"5 years now." I respond, looking over at one of the textbooks on the table.
"Wow, you're quite the devoted type."
"Meaning?"
"Well, I've only started since last year. It's a new found career choice for me. You...you seem to have everything planned out, and from a while back it seems." She smiles widely, taking another drag of her cancer stick.
"I guess..."
Before we can continue our conversation, a tall man in a long white science jacket walks in, a book in one hand. "Well, greetings ladies. I see you decided to turn up a little early." This man's skin is a olive tone and his hair is thick and brown, spikes slightly peeling off to the front of his face. He's young. Very young. Rochelle flashes a purely white grin at him before swiftly chucking her cancer stick into the bin within the corner of the room. "Rochelle, how many times have I told you not to smoke them awful things in this room?" The man asks, setting his book down on the front teaching desk of the room.
"Sorry, sir." She says, shrugging her shoulders and dipping her cigarette packet back into her jean pocket.
"Please," He replies, his voice so incredibly soft and understanding. "Call me Nick."
"Nick." She smiles, turning towards me and eyeing the desk behind me. "Sit with me?"
"Sure." I respond, sitting at the front desk with her, pulling one of the potion glass and books towards me, having a closer look. I can slightly catch the wife of Rochelle's deep scented perfume. It's thick with a rose type of scent, very familiar to my nose and I cannot quite point out where I've smelt it before but something about it prickles my nostrils in an intensifying way.
"So Rochelle, who is this new looking female I see before me?" Nick say, smiling wickedly over at me, his hands perched on the edge of his teaching desk as he leans forward. I feel his eyes digging deep into mine as if he is trying to search for something.
"This is Alana." She introduces me, her eyes darting off to her black bag which is decorated with pictures of skulls.
"Alana, it's a pleasure to meet you. So, I see you are one of my brand new students joining for this year." Nick says in a smooth voice. I nod in response, "Yes. It was a shock I got in to be honest."
"Why's that?"
"Oh, I just did not expect to get in, this university was my favourite and first choice but had such high grade expectations which I didn't think I would meet."
"Well, love, obviously you did! I congratulate you for being able to join us in the 3 years of being apart of this wonderful establishment." He smiles widely, gesturing around the room. Nick seems like an incredibly nice lecturer and I find myself having high hopes for this first year of university studying.
Despite my enjoyment at the start of the lesson when Nick begins to teach the whole class, and late students piling in last minute, I wonder where George is. Will he text me? I hope to meet with him again and talk more with him, find out more about who he is, what his hopes and ambitions are. The possible friendship lingering between us spikes curiosity in me and I find myself hoping to see him after class. I begin to glance various times at my mobile during class, wondering if he will text. Maybe he changed his mind, maybe he's busy...maybe he isn't in today. Why am I even this bothered? I hardly know him. He seems really friendly though, although...Rochelle had a point about his awkward behaviour. He is definitely weird in places but we connected in a promising way which makes me wonder more...
