Chapter 76 - Final Preparations

Violet.

The days leading up to the impending battle were a whirlwind of activity as we worked tirelessly to prepare. Mildred had reached out to her supernatural contacts, and slowly but surely, a motley crew of allies began trickling in - witches from other covens, shapeshifters, even a banshee. It was a strange and unsettling sight, seeing all these different supernatural beings come together under one banner, but I knew we needed every ounce of strength we could muster.

While the others coordinated logistics and strategy, I threw myself into honing my magical abilities. Mildred, Lorraine, Joyce and even Jasmine took turns training me, pushing me to my limits. There were moments of frustration when my powers would slip through my grasp, but I refused to give up. I had to be ready - for my friends, for my family, for myself.

As Mildred guided me through a particularly complex incantation, I could feel the energy building within me, a swirling maelstrom of raw power. "That's it, Violet," she encouraged, her voice calm and steady. "Channel it, focus it." I took a deep breath, allowing the magic to flow through me, and with a fluid motion of my hands, I released it in a brilliant burst of light.

Mildred smiled, her eyes shining with pride. "Excellent work. I knew you had it in you." I returned her smile, feeling a renewed sense of confidence. If I could harness this kind of power, maybe, we would have a fighting chance against Bart's forces. But mainly I hoped for a chance to speak with him. Face to face.

As the days passed, I could feel the steady improvement in my control. What had once been wild bursts of energy were now focused streams of power that I could direct with precision. I still had a long way to go, yet the confidence that swelled within me grew every day.

One evening, as I was bringing in coffees from Mildred's place to Paul's room at the care center, I overheard David and Javid talking in hushed tones. They didn't seem to notice me, and I couldn't help but pause and listen.

"We can't let him get to us, man," David said, his brow furrowed. "Bart's going to try to play us against each other, I just know it, bro."

Javid nodded, his expression equally serious. "I know. We've got to have each other's backs, no matter what."

"Exactly," David replied, clapping a hand on Javid's shoulder. "We stick together, no matter what Bart throws down. And we keep an eye on Violet, too. Make sure he doesn't try to play her against us."

My heart swelled with gratitude at their words. Whatever had happened before, they had let that go to form a united front while Paul was incapacitated and war loomed. I was damn proud of my mates.

The next day, I found myself standing next to Jasmine as we prepared cups of coffee for the volunteers who had answered the call to arms. The air between us was tense, the weight of our past hanging heavy. I couldn't help but feel a pang of unease as I recalled the way she had tormented me, the cruel words she had hurled in her jealousy.

"Violet," Jasmine said suddenly, her voice soft and uncharacteristically hesitant. I turned to face her, bracing myself for whatever might come next.

"I... I'm sorry," she continued, her eyes downcast. "For everything I've done to you. I was jealous and petty, and I took it out on you in the worst way. I knew Samara for what she was, and I sensed that you were a witch as well. I just wish… I hadn't let my insecurities take over."

I paused, my hand trembling slightly as I set down a freshly filled mug. Jasmine had apologized before. At Joyce's house. Around the time I learned that I was a witch. Back then, I didn't want to hear it or truly accept it. Since then, we haven't been exactly buddy-buddy, but there was a level of… respect between us, each bringing to the table something the other didn't have. "Jasmine, I..." I trailed off, unsure of what to say.

"No, please, let me finish," she pressed, her eyes pleading. "I know I can't take back the past, but I want you to know that I'm truly sorry. And I... I hope we can both make it through this. Together."

I studied her face, searching for any sign of deception. But all I saw was sincerity, a vulnerability that I had never witnessed in Jasmine before.

Slowly, I nodded. "Okay, Jasmine. Let's put it all past us, okay? We move forward from this point on."

Jasmine's shoulders slumped with relief, and she gave me a tentative smile. "Thank you, Violet. That means more to me than you know."

We continued working in silence, but the air between us felt lighter, the tension dissipating. I couldn't help but wonder if, in the face of this impending battle, Jasmine had finally found the courage to confront her own demons.

As the day wore on, I gravitated towards David and Javid, drawing strength from their support. When the time came to head to Paul's home for a final night of rest before the battle, they flanked me, their presence a comforting anchor. With kisses on the cheek, they said they were headed out to do some last-minute strategizing with the elders of the pack, but would be back before midnight. I watched them climb into David's car once more and before zooming off, they gave me identical grins and waves.

I entered Paul's house which was eerily quiet except for the muted voices of a TV coming from Paul and Celine's room. She had been an infrequent visitor at the care center, drifting out of his room like a ghost the moment we arrived. We figured it was her way of dealing with it all.

Joyce had texted me that she was still at Mildred's and she would be in later. I was just about to undress and jump into the shower when a sudden movement at the door startled me. Celine stood there, her eyes wild and her hair disheveled.

"Violet, you have to come with me," she said, her voice trembling. "David and Javid are in trouble."

My heart lurched in my chest, all thoughts of a warm shower and sleep forgotten. "What do you mean? What's happened?"

"I don't know," Celine replied, wringing her hands. "But we have to go… they need your help."

I pulled my phone from my pocket. "I'll call Joyce."

"There's no time. We need to go now!"

Without a moment's hesitation, I followed Celine, my mind racing with a thousand worst-case scenarios. As we hurried through the darkened streets in her car, I had to wonder what had happened to the twins.

Celine didn't have any answers. Only that they were near the football field of the school and they were surrounded by Bart's followers. For the tenth time, I tried to call Joyce, Jasmine, Mildred, anybody. But even before the first ring, the call would drop. I had paid my bill. I had data and minutes. Maybe the cell tower was out?

The fear and uncertainty gnawed at me, fueling my already frantic pace. I had to get to them, no matter what. They were counting on me, and I refused to let them down.

As we rounded the corner, I caught sight of Weber High. The familiar building and grounds, hidden in shadows. The windows were dark and ominous. Celine led me around the side towards the field. Her movements were frantic and hurried.

"This way," she said, motioning me to hurry.

I steeled myself, taking a deep breath before moving to follow, my magic crackling at my fingertips. Whatever was waiting for me, I was ready. I had to be.

For David and Javid.
