Chapter 62 - The Unveiling

Violet

We stood in the outer ring of the covenstead all huddled together, our eyes fixed on the clearing as the hooded figure stepped forward.

His voice, thin and rustling like dry leaves, cut through the air, reaching every ear in the outer ring of the covenstead.

I stood transfixed as the hooded figure addressed the gathering, his voice carrying an eerie, unsettling quality that made my skin crawl. "My faithful friends," he began, his words slithering through the air like venomous serpents, "I've gathered you all here today to show you something amazing. A new beginning is upon us, a time when our strength will outshine any witch or warlock out there."

Despite the distance between us, I could feel the weight of his gaze as it swept across the outer ring, as if he were appraising each and every one of us. I shivered, pulling my cloak tighter around my shoulders, and tried to quell the rising unease in my stomach. Whatever this "new beginning" entailed, I had a sinking feeling that it would bring nothing but the bad.

Didn't seem so to the covenstead.

Cheers erupted from the crowd, their voices rising in screeches of excitement. Lizbeth held up her hands for silence like the twisted MC she was, her eyes gleaming with a wicked delight as she surveyed the gathering before her.

The hooded man continued, "For too long, we've been shackled, our powers suppressed by those who fear us. But no more. I've discovered a way to unleash our true potential, to make us stronger than ever before. However we have much to do to prepare for that day. The Eve of the Winter Solstice!"

A murmur ran through the crowd, as a sense of foreboding creeping over me.

"With this new power," the hooded man went on, his voice growing louder, more insistent, "we will no longer be at the mercy of others. We will be the ones in control, the ones others fear. We will be unstoppable."

The crowd erupted into cheers once more, the sound reverberating through the forest, bouncing off the trees and filling the air with an eerie, unsettling energy. I glanced over at Sam. His eyes were wide, mirroring the worry that twisted in my own gut. He felt it too - that sense of impending danger, of something dark and sinister lurking just beneath the surface of this gathering.

"And let me tell you this," the hooded man warned, his voice dropping to a whisper that still managed to carry through the air, "with this great new power, we will be able to crush our enemies, so that they may never rise again."

A wave of whispers spread through the crowd as David edged closer to me, his blue eyes locked onto mine, questioning. "This guy can't be serious, can he?"

I didn't have an answer for him, and honestly, I didn't care. Kiki was still dazed, with Fergus and Jasmine trying to bring her back to her senses. Marla was frozen, her mouth hanging open in shock. Sam mumbled to himself, lost in his own thoughts. David stood tall, his arms crossed, looking skeptical. Javid glanced between me and his twin brother, a look of understanding finally crossing his face. Maybe he was realizing that we should have left when we had the chance.

To do so now would only draw attention to ourselves.

My gut was screaming at me to get out of there, to run as fast as my legs could carry me. Every instinct in my body urged me to flee, to escape whatever that hooded figure was blathering on about.

I wished with all my heart that I had told Joyce the truth about our little adventure, instead of spinning a tale about going to a midnight movie with the twins. If only I had been honest, maybe I wouldn't be in this situation, my heart pounding and my palms slick with sweat.

Some movie this turned out to be - a real-life horror flick with no clear escape route.

I stared back at Javid, my heart pounding in my chest as I tried to find the words to express the fear and confusion swirling inside me. His brow furrowed, and I could see the worry in his eyes as he searched my face for answers.

"Violet, you okay?" he asked, his voice gentle but urgent.

I parted my lips, ready to tell him that no, I was far from okay, but before I could utter a word, Spoke up and the panic in his voice gave me a fresh wave of terror. "Javid, we need to get her out of here. Now." His tone was insistent, and he tugged on his sleeve. His gaze flickering around us as if he expected danger to lurk in every shadow.

David stepped in, his voice firm. "We're not leaving. Not until we know what's going on."

Jasmine and Fergus exchanged a glance before speaking up. "Kiki's not well," Jasmine said, her voice low. "We've got enough information. Tabor's working with the covenstead, and they've got something planned for the Winter Solstice. Let's just leave already."

"How are we going to get back?" Marla whined. "I have to recharge before I can transport again."

We all looked at David as if he had the answer.

"I can do two. I'm sure." he said. "I've been practicing."

Jasmine said, "I can do myself… and perhaps Kiki, she's light."

Sam shifted on his feet,"I'll take Violet and Javid. Now that's settled— he looked around, noticing as I had that a few witches and warlocks from the covenstead were starting to look our way, their eyes narrowed in suspicion. One of them, a tall woman her face narrow and pale began to walk towards us.

David shook his head. "We can't just leave. Not without knowing more."

I looked around. We were surrounded by people who could do who knows what to us if they found out we were spying on them. I didn't want to find out what would happen if they did.

The tall woman was getting closer, her eyes locked on our group. I could feel the panic rising in my chest, making it hard to breathe.

"Guys," I whispered, my voice shaking. "We need to get out of here. Now."

But it was too late. The tall woman was standing right in front of us, her eyes scanning our faces. "Can I help you with something?" she asked, her voice cold and hard.

I looked at my everyone, my heart racing. We were in trouble, and I didn't know how we were going to get out of it.
