Chapter 115: Conspiracy theories

Garrett

I might have overreacted towards Jace when I caught Jacob's scent on him but that had totally sent me overboard and I delved to work. But now, the things happening were beginning to get me angered. Peter had just come home with a tattoo and I could not put my head around the fact that he had gone through so much pain just to do this. I mean, even if he was trying to make a statement, was this the time for it? It might not have come straight but I do recall that Harold said something about us maintaining the health of our body and something told me that right now, it had almost everything to do with what he had said. I was waiting for him to drop the bombshell on Peter when Damon returned smelling like rotten meat.

Usually, we have been around rotten meat but to think now that he was reeking of this one, it actually made me provoked. I have never had an encounter with a vampire before and never had any idea what they smell like but recently, it had become quite clear to me that whatever he was reeking of was making me want to pounce on him. I was even going to ask him what he had done with himself when Harold spoke up.

Seriously? A bloody vampire? What else was Damon waiting to add to his list of crazy adventures? I would never have thought that such a thing would happen and now, I realised that everything was chaotic. Luckily, we headed straight to the cave where we all got talking but Peter bothered me. Even before Damon said it, I could not help but notice that he was in pain and I felt really bad that he was going through this. Harold said that it was very possible that he might lose his limbs and I was beginning to wonder if what he had gone after that led to the tattoo was actually worth losing a limb for because I could not understand why he would do this.

It was clear to me even though his tattoo was covered that it was sort of corrosive. It was eating into his flesh and I can only hope that he would be fine.

Now, the matter had escalated again and Harold was beginning to tell us that our father was coming to take the one thing we all had our hopes etched on that we would at the very least get through to the bounty hunters. It was our captive. Hearing this made me really angry as I started wondering why on earth we had to work our asses off, alright, it was Damon who brought him but why would they take him? Our father had his men and we had always been living on our own with no one protecting or helping us with stuff like that except Harold.

Hearing this was really mad and my heart boiled and I was already tired. My thoughts went straight to Jace as I wanted to be close with him. I needed the peace that his presence brings as that would make a whole lot of sense to me. But everyone was deliberating on what Harold had just said. I got tired of the back and forth but had been expecting more from Damon. Hell, he had been the one who found the bounty hunter and took that risk but he did not seem to really care much.

Something had to be going on underground with him and I needed to keep an eye on him. He had really made friends with a vampire which was our arch enemy in the whole world and now, he was busy playing around with some secret of sorts. Perhaps, he might know more than what he was letting on and so, a conspiracy theory came along. How on earth had he really managed to get the bounty hunter by chance? I mean, he had told his story which sounded true but I have read that careful practicing of lies always eventually morphs into a habit that prevents us from discerning which is which.

We had rogue werewolves. The types that would have easily fit into Damon's care free lifestyle and I needed to get it out of him. So while they were all locked in their heated argument, I decided to ask a question.

"Why aren't you fighting this, Damon?" I demanded and suddenly, everyone went quiet and was looking at me where I sat on the floor.

"What do you mean? Fight what?" He asked me.

"I mean this entire thing. You were the one who found the bounty hunter and you brought him home. How come have you not really put up a resistance? You seem not to really care." I said and cast him a glance.

"Listen, bro, I already said what I wanted but if dad wants to take the hunter then he has every right. He's the Alpha after all and he can do as he pleases. If we stand in his way and with how he has always reacted to us, who's to say he would hold himself from hurting us too?" He asked me.

Now, my suspicion was growing and I stood up as I snickered. Everyone was beginning to get into the mood I had been expecting and now was the time that I would get the truth out of him.

"Garrett, if there is something you have to say, could you say it?" Jacob asked me.

"What's the rush brother? I mean z we all rushed into believing something that our brother told us. He suddenly goes out one day and he happens to run into bounty hunters that slay a vampire that easily. The next day, he's home reeking of vampire stench and claims he was being followed. That makes me wonder if they all have a sudden tracker that reads for just Damon." I said.

"Are you insinuating that I'm a traitor?" Damon demanded.

"I didn't insinuate anything, I only called out my suspicions and you gave it a name tag. Makes me actually wonder if I am making sense so much that you have to react." I said to him,

There was silence but then I looked up at Damon and his eyes were clouded with tears making me feel like I had been a villain. I mean, I was only trying to clear my doubts because I knew he was hiding something.

"You really think that of me? After all these years that we have been together? I mean, you know what, fuck you, Garrett. Fuck this and fuck all of you. I am the only one amongst all of you that has actually taken things seriously. I am the one who has risked my life most because of the bounty hunters and how I have no idea what things I have managed to work out myself but you know what, you all can go to hell and burn in the abyss. I'm outta here." Damon said and turned away just as his tears were threatening to fall off his eyes.

"Come on, D... let's talk about this." Jacob said to him but Damon would not listen and suddenly, everywhere was quiet.

I was really quiet as I started thinking about what I had said and I felt really bad. I might have taken it overboard but I should have expected that someone else was thinking the same thing.

"You know that he's been acting a little suspicious." I said as I glanced around.

"He's been doing that but that doesn't mean that he's a traitor." Jacob said.

"I didn't call him a traitor." I said to Jacob but he was in no mood to listen to what I had to say. Clearly, he was pissed off as well as me and I knew it.

We started out into a little argument and before we would go further with it, Harold stopped us instantly.

"That's enough!" He yelled and we both turned to look at him. "Garrett, I have to say that I am really disappointed with you. All these years I have been with all of you and not for once have I thought of this sort of thing. Damon might have his secrets but I best know that he's doing what he thinks that would protect everyone of us. You really should think about what you have done."

"But Harold...." I started saying when he cut me short.

"No, Garrett. You stay back and make use of your senses. You overstepped this time and I am obligated to tell you the truth whether or not you want to hear. You have hurt your brother and I don't care whatever conspiracy theories you have. I expected you all to bind together." He said and then turned to walk over to Peter who was still weak clearly. "Jacob, come help me with him."

I watched them as they assisted Peter and then started leaving the cave. It was just me in here now in the dark and I felt really bad. I probably should have given it a lot of thought before I had jumped into conclusions. If only I could take back what I had said, I might have just felt a little peace.
