Chapter 301 I Don't Understand What You're Saying

At the entrance of the Smith Manor.

Sophia had just dropped James and Michael back at the Smith Manor and was about to take Emily to the airport.

Emily, wearing her latest pink fox backpack, was hopping and skipping ahead, turning back from time to time to check if Sophia was keeping up. When she saw her getting closer, she'd continue forward.

Sophia followed behind, watching her with a smile while reminding her to be careful.

Just as they left the Smith Manor gates.

She spotted a black limited-edition sports car parked next to their vehicle. Philip was standing there with a dark, serious expression, staring at her.

Seeing Philip's aggressive approach, Emily's bright eyes flickered with curiosity and wariness. She quickly turned and ran back to Sophia's side, tightly gripping her fingers.

Seeing the child there, especially being watched by those innocent eyes, Philip didn't dare raise his voice.

Given how much William cared about this child now, he was afraid he'd be carried out on a stretcher.

Besides, Lyra was her godmother, which made him Emily's godfather in a way.

Philip lowered his voice, "Sophia, we need to talk."

She directly picked up Emily and walked past him without a glance, gently placing Emily in the car.

Then, turning to face him, she said, "Talk about what?"

"Come over here. It wouldn't be good for Emily to hear this—it'll affect your image as a mother."

Philip had just moved aside a bit when he saw Emily poke her head out, her little face showing clear disapproval of what he'd said.

Emily pressed her lips together and defended, "Sir, I already heard it. If you're worried about it affecting her, you don't have to say it."

Then she looked up at Sophia standing by the car and said with a giggle, "Mommy, am I right?"

Philip fell silent.

Living this long, only to be called out by a two-year-old child.

Sophia pinched Emily's soft cheek, the corners of her mouth lifting in a smile, "Emily's right."

Emily's clear, transparent eyes quickly shifted to Philip's face, her chin slightly raised, as if telling him: Did you hear that?

Philip met Emily's expressive eyes. Her proud little look with her chin up was exactly like his friend's cold sideways glance—the identical scornful look.

He sighed.

Seeing that Sophia really had no intention of coming over, he had to walk over himself and lower his voice, speaking reasonably, "Sophia, why are you targeting Cheryl? She's just a young girl who hasn't done anything to you."

"Do you know that the things you've stirred up could completely destroy Cheryl!"

Seeing Cheryl this morning with swollen eyes from crying, Philip remembered how her sister looked on her deathbed, entrusting Cheryl to him, and he felt even more resentful of what Sophia had done.

Philip said quietly, "You won't let me see Lyra, and I don't blame you for that."

Seeing this man, Emily immediately remembered the scene at the city hall. Now hearing her godmother Lyra's name mentioned, along with his words defending someone else, her eyes shone with crafty gleam as she quietly opened the video call on her phone watch.

This man, who almost became her godfather, was up to no good.

She couldn't let Sophia be bullied!

Sophia couldn't help but laugh at Philip's absurd remark. And now he dared blame her?

He didn't look when he should have, didn't stay when he should have.

Now that something had happened, he came over to show concern and blame others for not letting him see her.

"But you can't take out your anger over Lyra's injury on other innocent people, can you? Cheryl was filming on set at the time—there's no way she could have hurt Lyra. You targeting her is completely malicious prejudice."

His words were almost identical to what William had said defending Alice back then.

Seeing the mocking curve at the corner of her mouth, Philip frowned, displeased with her expression.

He asked, "What are you ridiculing?"

"Not mocking—celebrating. Celebrating that Lyra saw through you early and left."

Sophia's voice was flat, but the words hit hard.

During the one-month divorce cooling-off period, Lyra had directly canceled her phone number. Except for her close family and friends, she'd cut off contact with everyone connected to him.

Thinking about this, Philip felt an unnamed fire burning in his chest.

If it weren't for her accident delaying the divorce, they probably would have no relationship left by now.

"Whether my wife and I divorce or not is none of your business. Sophia, aren't you going too far? Don't think that just because you're my friend's ex-wife, I won't come after you."

Sophia shot him a brief glance and then looked away, chuckling coldly, "I don't care whose ex-wife I am. If you've got the guts, try it. Whoever doesn't follow through is a coward."

Philip fell silent.

How did William put up with this woman for five years?

Applause came from inside the car.

"Mommy's so cool!" The admiration and worship in Emily's eyes was another jab at Philip.

She braced her hands on the leather armrests, leaning halfway out to meet his gaze.

She'd been quietly listening to Sophia and Philip's conversation the whole time. Watching him stunned into silence by Sophia, his eyes like ice, she couldn't help but want to applaud.

"Sir, Mr. Smith says men who yell at women are all bad guys."

Philip didn't doubt for a second that the 'Mr. Smith, she mentioned, was that bastard William.

He frowned and reminded her, "Emily, I'm your godfather. You can call me Philip."

Emily directly gave him an 'I don't understand what you're saying' expression, her pure innocent eyes flickering with childish disdain, as if Philip were some annoying pest.

Emily narrowed her eyes and smiled.

"Sir, you should hurry up and get divorced. I'm going to introduce all the handsome guys to Lyra."

Philip could hear himself grinding his teeth.

Though Emily was young, her eloquence was no less sharp than Sophia's.

Sophia rubbed Emily's little head, smiling as she reminded her, "Emily, sit properly, or you'll fall out."

"I'm not scared."

She lifted her smiling face and continued, "If I fall, I'll just use this bad man as a cushion."

Philip?

The evening sunlight lazily fell on Sophia's profile as she turned and gave Philip a brief, cold glance.

Her tone was icy as she said, "Philip, when you stood up for Cheryl, did you know that Lyra had over a hundred stitches and is still lying unconscious in a hospital bed?"

Philip stood paralyzed, as though drenched in ice-cold water.

Philip's eyes were dazed, "How could she..."

"You could investigate and find out I was behind it, but you couldn't find out how badly she was hurt?"

"Or is it that you thought this was just Lyra's trick to frame Cheryl, and you never believed her injuries were serious from the start?"

These two questions left Philip speechless.

His throat tightened, instantly losing the strength to speak as he met her emotionless eyes.

Philip was about to say, "Is she okay..."
