"The bankrupt daughter of the Johnson family, who completed her education through work-study and scholarships, then became Mrs. Smith of the Smith family—the top elite family—through a childhood engagement. That should be a life story many girls would envy, right?"
She stopped struggling against his grip on her wrist and instead raised her other hand to touch the corner of his restrained and suppressed eyes.

Sophia curved her lips in a self-mocking smile, "Do you think so too?"
William glanced at her hand from the corner of his eye but didn't brush it away.

William withdrew his cold aura, direct and honest, "Sophia, I never treated you as my accessory."
His features were refined, like a work of art meticulously carved by God, yet he had those cold, indifferent eyes.

Ever since hearing from Tony last time about the possibility that Sophia hadn't remarried, William's heart had been restless these past days, and even he couldn't figure out why.
At work, he didn't like wasting time, and his schedule was packed to the extreme.
But when it came to anything involving Sophia, he inexplicably felt hesitant—something that had never happened to him before.
William looked down at her, "As long as you explain, I'll believe you."
Sophia raised an eyebrow, "But William, why should I have to explain?"
"You suspect Raymond and me had an affair during our marriage, then show me proof, instead of making me prove my innocence."
"Whoever makes the accusation provides the evidence."
"I'm telling you for the last time—during our five-year marriage, I was completely faithful."
The hand William had gripping her wrist suddenly went numb.
Watching Sophia walk around him toward the stairs, his heart tightened, and he wanted to chase after her.
His thin lips pressed together slightly, "Sophia!"
Sophia's steps didn't pause for even a moment as she left his line of sight.
At the stairway corner, three little heads poked out in unison.
Watching the abandoned William, Emily stretched out her chubby little hand with a grin.
"Mommy won."
James and Michael exchanged glances, sighed, and handed their candy to Emily.
The three children crouched in the blind spot at the corner.
Michael sighed, chin propped on both hands, looking troubled.
"James, if Dad keeps making Mom angry like this, when will our family of five ever be together?"
He still wanted to spend Christmas with Sophia and Emily this year.
James was troubled, too. Of course, he wanted to live with his whole family every day—these past few years had been so hard.
The current situation wasn't great either. Living with William meant being separated from Sophia and Emily; living with Sophia and Emily meant being separated from William.
"I still love Dad. It would be great if Dad could just make Mom happy."
Emily glanced at James and Michael without speaking. She would always unconditionally stand on Sophia's side. "I just want Mommy to be happy. I don't care about anything else."
The setting sun cast its glow on the three children, stretching their shadows long.
Three little heads huddled together, plotting something.
William heard the noise and came over to see the three of them crouched on the ground, looking troubled.
"What are you three doing squatting here?"
Michael answered without thinking, "Thinking about when you, Dad..." will make Mom happy.
James looked back at William and slowly said, "Dad, we haven't seen you in so long. We miss you."
Emily showed a smile as bright as the sun.
The hard shell wrapped around William's heart melted at James and Michael's words.
William crouched down and patted the three children's heads. The kids were being raised really well here, looking especially healthy.
He had already had someone investigate the lab's background.
Although the founder's identity was unclear, everyone here was devoted to medical research.
Clean backgrounds, simple social connections.
There were even many children from wealthy families and scholarly households.

After sending the kids back to their room, he went to the study.

Now, after another unpleasant parting with Sophia, William felt a sense of helplessness welling up inside.
He rubbed his temples and was just about to make do on the study sofa when he heard Michael's voice at the door.
"Dad, something's wrong! Mom fell!"
William quickly followed him to the room and rushed straight to the bathroom. A bottle fell to the ground, grazing his cheek.

Discovering it was William, Sophia felt relieved and then more angry and humiliated.
She glared at the uninvited guest behind her, "William, what are you doing in here!"
Seeing her eyes reddened from the foam irritation, he sighed and stepped forward to grab the showerhead to rinse her off first.
Naturally, Sophia didn't cooperate.
One hand tightly gripping the towel wrapped around her body, she pushed him hard with the other hand, "Get out!"
William's slender fingers quickly caught her resisting hand.
William's deep, attractive voice was now tinged with some hoarseness, "Don't move!"
Finally, Sophia's world cleared.
Just as William was about to explain, she pointed at the bathroom door and said loudly, "Get out!"
Suddenly, the sound of the door locking rang out.
Three sneaky children at the door had locked it.
"James, will this keep Mom from being angry?"
"I don't know either. That's what the book says. Look, it says here: Dad pulled Mom into the bathroom, and an hour later Dad carried Mom out, and the two made up..."
"Why aren't Mom and Dad talking anymore?"
The two people in the bathroom, hearing James and Michael's conversation, both darkened their faces.
