Chapter 28 Chapter 28
Adrian sat in his living room that night, the lights dim, his thoughts heavy. He could not take Savannah’s face out of his mind—the way she cried when she talked about her husband, the way she held her belly like it was her only shield.
His closest friend, Daniel, dropped by. Daniel was the kind of man who always noticed when something was off. He looked at Adrian, shook his head, and said, “You are not yourself. What’s going on?”
Adrian leaned back, rubbing his forehead. “I met someone.”
Daniel raised a brow. “So that’s what it is. A woman. Tell me.”
Adrian let out a deep sigh. “Her name is Savannah. She’s… different. She’s young, she’s pregnant, and she was working herself almost to death in a laundry shop. I found her when she fainted, Daniel. If I hadn’t been there, I don’t know what would have happened.”
Daniel frowned. “Pregnant? And working like that? Where is the father?”
Adrian’s jaw tightened. His voice dropped. “The father is a man who left her. She told me everything. It was supposed to be their wedding anniversary. She wanted to tell him she was carrying his child. But instead of joy, he gave her divorce papers. And when she told him about the baby, he called her a liar. He accused her of trying to trap him.”
Daniel’s eyes widened. “That’s cruel. So cruel. And he left her?”
“Yes,” Adrian said bitterly. “He left her for another woman. And now Savannah is all alone. No family around her. No friends she can trust. Just her and the baby.”
For a moment the room was silent. Adrian stared at the glass of water in front of him, his fingers tapping the table.
Daniel leaned forward. “Why are you telling me this, Adrian? You don’t usually get involved in other people’s business.”
Adrian exhaled slowly. His voice was low, almost uncertain. “Because I can’t ignore her. She’s strong, but I can see how broken she is. She smiles to hide the pain, but her eyes… her eyes tell everything. She deserves better than what life gave her.”
Daniel studied him for a moment, then smirked. “You’ve started caring for her.”
Adrian’s head shot up. “I didn’t say that.”
“You don’t need to,” Daniel replied calmly. “The way you speak about her says it all. I’ve never seen you look this troubled over a woman.”
Adrian stayed quiet, his thoughts loud. Images of Savannah filled his mind—her tired smile, the way she thanked him, the tears that rolled down her cheeks.
“She’s pregnant, Daniel,” Adrian whispered. “Pregnant, abandoned, and yet she keeps moving. Do you know what that means? That woman is stronger than she knows.”
Daniel nodded slowly. “So what are you going to do?”
Adrian clenched his fist on the table. “I don’t know. But I know I can’t just walk away.”
Daniel leaned back, crossing his arms. “Careful, Adrian. Helping her is one thing. Falling for her is another. She’s fragile right now. And you—you’re starting to sound like a man who wants to protect her more than anyone else.”
Adrian didn’t answer. He just sat there, staring into the silence.
Deep down, he knew Daniel was right. Something was already shifting in his heart. And no matter how much he tried to deny it, he couldn’t change one truth—Savannah was no longer just another woman to him.
She was the reason his nights felt restless.
