Chapter 21 Chapter 21
Selena
I wasn't going to be yelled at or looked down on anymore, and the only way to prevent that, was getting out of my office ten minutes before the meeting with the marketing team.
So here I was sitting in the meeting, the chairs empty, but the emptiness and silence were better than being crowded with judging stares.
Everyone knows me now.
Every moment was watched, and gossiped about. It was uncomfortable. I just had to stay here for six months. It will end soon—Though I was just in my first week.
I opened my tablet.
Today's mission wasn't only for the meeting, but to send out information to the crazy women.
Her words suddenly filled my head.
‘You have to help me, Selena. Theodore is a dangerous being. He doesn't care about anyone as long as he stays in power. Selling drugs, killing, these are all his fortresses. He is a demon, the society doesn't need someone like that, don't you agree?”
Her eyes had been fierce as she spoke.
At that moment, the way she looked sent an unsettling feeling down my bones.
And then, I asked her why she won't work with the cops. I’m sure she would be a great help to them.
“The cops are useless. Inside them is a mole who has exposed everything. Tell me, why do you think Theo can roam free? His crimes aren't hidden. From people found dead, to his gangs distributing drugs, nothing is hidden. He has so much help that the cops would rather be quiet than cause trouble to the whole country.”
I knew he was powerful, but hearing her speak of him that way created another kind of fear.
I snapped my head up at the door opening. It wasn't time yet, so who….
A male employee whom I have never seen before entered. His suit has to be expensive, his brown hair styled sideways.
Our eyes locked for a second, and he smiled, taking a seat beside me.
‘Why was he here when it wasn't time yet?’ I groaned to myself.
“I guess you came on time to have alone time?”
Thank God you know that. I wanted to roll my eyes. And maybe he saw this, because he beamed more.
“I’m Stephen, from America. I got here a year ago to work here. You look from here, “
Once again, his eyes glance over at me.
Why was everyone having a problem keeping their gaze to themselves? It was really uncomfortable.
I forced a smile. “I am. T&M must be a great choice for everyone.” I commented, hoping my tone was sarcastic enough.
Instead, he nodded. “It is. The pay is good. Working here for over a year has helped me a lot, so.” He shrugged. “And, the boss is fair.”
I gave him a questioning gaze.
“The first time I landed in Monterrey, I didn't have much, and thought it would be hard to settle down, but the boss has suddenly offered me a place to stay.” He let out an awkward laugh, his hand moving to the back of his head.
“Of course, I was scared because of the rumors surrounding the company then. There were a lot of people being kidnapped, and somehow, it was pointing to the boss, though there was no evidence. I was hesitant, but I was desperate so I took it. It later turned out that I wasn't the only one with such an offer.”
Stephen looked grateful.
I signed. It seemed there was something good about the boss. Or it was all a facade, to make his workers stand with him.
“You seem to have a biased opinion here.”
I snapped my head to him. “No, I don't.” I almost yelled. I couldn't afford him thinking I hated the boss.
He smiled brightly. “You don't have to be alarmed. Most people think that. It's normal t—”
A notification popped up on my phone, drawing my attention away from Stephen.
My eyes widened at the name. Theodore Mateo, marked as boss.
Anastasia had asked me to save his contact.
“Come to my office, now.” It says.
My brows furrowed.
Why?
There were just five minutes left before the meeting.
“I decided to follow you after seeing you ma–”
I stood up. “I’ll take my leave now.” I don't wait to hear from Stephen before taking my tablet and storming out of the room.
My steps were fast, striding through the way, and finally I entered his office.
His eyes looked up lazily as I walked closer to stand in front of his desk. How could someone this handsome be filled with evil?
“You asked for me,” I spoke.
He dropped his pen, closing the document.
“Why aren't you by my side?”
My eyes widened at his question. What does that mean? I searched his eyes.
He closed his eyes, and when they opened, he glared “You are my assistant, you should be here to inform me on everything. Why do I have to call for you?”
What was going on? He had placed me under Anastasia to train me at the meeting.
I opened my mouth to speak, but closed it back at the look of annoyance that appeared on his face.
“I’m sorry for neglecting my duties, I thought I still had a lot to learn from Mrs Anastasia and ha—”
“You do have a lot to learn, Selena.”
My heart thundered at his voice calling my name. Why does it flow so smoothly from his mouth?
“But you should do it under my guidance from now on as my assistant.” There was no doubt he wasn't in a good mood.
“Yes sir.” I nodded. “Uhm, you have a meeting with the marketing team in…” I checked my watch. “In three minutes,” I decided to speak.
He doesn't react to it, his eyes only bored at me.
“What relationship do you have with Noah Theodore?”
My heart sinked.
Why was he asking me about Noah? Have I been exposed?
“What…what do you mean, sir?”
