At that moment. Nicole was on the tea plantation. Hearing Harlan’s tone, her heart went cold.
She had been married to him for four years, quit her job, and dedicated herself to being the woman behind him, raising their children and caring for his parents. Her own mother was already in poor health, and on top of that, her mother–in–law was hospitalized twice a year, and she was the one taking care of everything.
Her mother–in–law was difficult. They could have hired a nurse, but she refused, insisting that Nicole personally take care of her. At home, Jacob was still young, and even with a nanny, as a mother, she couldn’t just wash her hands of him.
For four years, for him and for this family, she had worked harder than if she were holding down three jobs, yet she never got a single word of praise from him. In his eyes, everything she did was taken for granted.
Even now, after she had clearly asked for a divorce, he still didn’t take it seriously, still thinking she was the same Nicole he could order around.
“Are you going to say something?
What are you doing?”
Harlan was getting impatient on the other end.
“I’m not going.”
Nicole said coldly and firmly.
“Nicole!
I’m giving you a way out right now. You’d better take it and not push your luck. When you come begging me to take you back, I won’t care about your public image anymore!”
Hearing Harlan’s arrogant tone, her heart felt even colder. “I told you, I’m not coming back. I’ve already filed for divorce. You can wait for the summons.”
“You’re serious?”
Harlan said angrily.

“I was never joking with you. I don’t want to be with you anymore. That’s it!”
Nicole hung up the phone
A few minutes later, she received a text. Her card had been canceled

Since they got married, she had always used a supplementary card for Harlan’s credit card. For holidays and her birthday, Harlan would give her a gift card, and he gave her a small household allowance each month. That was it.
As the supplementary card was cut off, his message arrived: “I’m giving you one day. I don’t care where you are, get back here immediately, and you’ll have a chance to fix this.”
Nicole felt a bitter pang in her heart.
This was the man she had been blind enough to choose.
Even if he was trying to leave her with nothing, had he forgotten their son was with her? Was he going to abandon his son too?
But, thankfully, she didn’t have to rely on him to survive.
For the past four years, she had lived frugally and had a small amount of savings. Plus, when her mother passed away, as the only child (from the one–child policy era), she received all the insurance and death benefits.
The thought that at her age, she was still relying on the money from her mother’s death to get through this difficult time made her heart ache unbearably.
“Mom.”
Jacob came running up the mountain path.
Nicole secretly wiped away her tears, crouching down to hug her son. “Jacob, what are you doing here?”
“I came to help you, Mom. I can work.”
Jacob wiped her eyes with his small, soft hands. “Don’t cry, Mom. Jacob will grow up soon.”
Hearing her son’s thoughtful words, a wave of sorrow washed over Nicole’s heart. She held it back, not wanting him to see her sadness, and forced a smile. “Mommy’s not crying, I just got some dirt in my eye.”
“Mommy, Jacob will blow on it for you.”

Jacob cupped her face in his hands and pursed his little lips.
His warm breath brushed against her eyelids, making her eyes grow even warmer.
