At most, Mr. Maynard would just pay them off.
But she didn’t want to say that to her daughter–it wasn’t proper or honorable.
She only kissed her daughter’s forehead. “Sophia, you’ll understand when you grow up.”
It was the palest, weakest explanation.
Meanwhile, Maricela watched Cedrick end his call and asked eagerly, “What happened?”
“Nothing. Mylee says she’s quitting.”
Cedrick pocketed his phone.
Maricela breathed a sigh of relief. But what if that servant told the truth?
She wasn’t afraid–she’d done what she pleased. Even Lucille couldn’t rival her in Cedrick’s eyes, let alone a servant.
After all, she’d nearly gotten Lucille killed, and Cedrick still took her side.
The thought made her beam. Just then, she pulled out Lucille’s Designer Evening Gown.
“Wow, such a beautiful dress! Is it for me?”
She gasped in admiration.
“This…” Cedrick glanced at it. “It’s Lucille’s.”
“Lucille’s…” Her eyes darted. “Cedrick, perfect timing! I’m attending a charity gala soon–Harlan and you are taking me–and I’ve got nothing to wear. Lend me this one?”
Cedrick frowned slightly. “Why this one?
It’s Lucille’s size–it might not fit you.
I’ll take you shopping instead. This is just from some local designer’s studio. Why not get a Dior or Chanel?”
“No!”
Maricela held the dress against herself, comparing it over and over. “Don’t you know how sought–after Ding Yi is? He studied in England, worked at those fancy houses you mentioned, then started his own bespoke studio. He’s fa- mous overseas now–celebrities wear his designs on red carpets, and getting an appointment’s nearly impossible!”
“Really?”

Cedrick hadn’t followed fashion since Lucille took over his wardrobe five years ago.
“Yes! Cedrick, please… Let me just try it on? If it fits, can I have it?”
Without waiting for his answer, she grabbed the dress and headed to the guest bathroom.
She emerged unhappy–the dress was too small.
The side zipper wouldn’t close by two inches.
“Cedrick…” She pouted. “What now?
I only want a Ding Yi gown!”
“Then we’ll commission a new one,”
Cedrick said.
Maricela’s eyes lit up. “Right now?”
Her eagerness made him chuckle. “Yes, right now.”
He called his assistant first. Recognizing his number, the assistant answered, “Mr. Maynard, hello. Is there an issue with the dress?”
“No.”
Cedrick replied. “Can we commission another gown?”
“Of course.”
The assistant responded immediately.
“Should I come for measurements now?”
“Sure. Bring Ms. Lucille right over.”
Ms. Lucille…
Cedrick didn’t overthink it, taking Maricela along.
To his surprise, when they arrived at the studio, the assistant hesitated upon seeing Maricela. “Sir… this isn’t for Ms. Lucille?”
“Yes, this is my friend. She really admires Helen’s designs and wants to place a custom order,”
Cedrick said.
The assistant flashed what Cedrick considered a textbook professional smile. “Sorry, Mr. Cedrick, we only take cus- tom orders for regular clients.”
Cedrick’s brow furrowed. “Am I not a regular? Didn’t I just buy plenty? Isn’t this piece I’m wearing from your store?”

The assistant maintained her professional smile. “Apologies, Mr. Cedrick. Our regulars are Ms. Lucille.”
Sorry, Mr. Maynard
“What?”
Maricela exploded. “Lucille?
What money does she have to afford your clothes!
Don’t you know Mr. Maynard’s backing her?
Without him, she’s nothing!”
The assistant smiled politely. “Of course. We’re aware Ms. Radford is Mr. Maynard’s wife.”
Maricela grew more triumphant. “Then why refuse his order?
Do you even know who Mr. Maynard is?
Seaston’s rising star, the youngest CEO of a listed company. If he wanted, he could buy this whole store.”
The assistant nodded. “We know.”
“Then why this attitude?
Don’t you want business?”
Maricela’s arrogance flared.

The assistant glanced at Cedrick, then back at Maricela. “We certainly know Mr. Maynard and recognize Ms. Rad- ford as his wife. But may I ask–who are you?”
