My company’s funding came from him!

“Bastard…”
“Enough! Stop fighting!”
Monica cried anxiously. “What do we do now?”
Cedrick emerged from the house. He gave Jaxon a cold look, completely ignoring the man’s renewed, servile smile, and walked straight past him.
The car stopped on the roadside outside. After getting in, Cedrick didn’t leave the village but drove deeper into it, heading straight for the village council office.
“I’ll find the village head. I’ll be right back.”
He said.
Who knows what he discussed with the village head, but the village head saw him out. Getting back in the car, he told her, “It’s settled. Your parents will leave soon.”
Cedrick’s competence was unquestionable. If he said it was handled, it was handled.
Now came the matter between the two of them.
Cedrick stated, “Lucille, I’ve done everything you asked.
The house is sold. Her bags and gifts–all reclaimed and cashed out. The money’s yours.”
With that, he took out his phone and transferred the funds.
Lucille estimated the amount was fair.
“To show my sincerity, I’ll take you to see the house. It truly has new owners. The buyers are already planning reno- vations.”
Cedrick started the engine. “After we see it, please honor your promise: visit the local police station.”
Lucille’s hand was still bandaged, her head injury freshly healed.
He seemed to notice, sighing deeply. “I know pushing you now seems harsh. But this must be done. Maricela kept her word. Your delay makes her uneasy.”
Lucille rotated her wrist. The bandages on her fingers glared white under the sun.

This man–really–a Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde.
“Promise me?”
He demanded an answer.
Lucille sighed. “Don’t rush me. It’ll be settled in three or four days.”
She’d handle it before leaving.
“What three or four days?
What do you mean?”
Cedrick frowned, displeased. “You need more days? That’s unacceptable.”
She smiled faintly. He’d misunderstood.
“Mrs. Maynard!”

He slammed the brakes. “Are you toying with me? I followed your instructions like a fool! Don’t tell me you won’t withdraw the case! Is this a test?”
“No.”
Lucille smiled. “We’ll go!
Right now!”
Cedrick studied her. That ambiguous smile–he couldn’t tell if she lied. “If you refuse today, I’ll drag you there by
force!”
His eyes turned vicious.
The man who’d vowed to protect his wife moments ago seemed an illusion.
Cedrick restarted the car, driving to a new residential complex. Coincidentally, as they parked, Maricela emerged hauling a large bag.
Spotting Cedrick’s car, Maricela dragged her bag over, sniffling.
Cedrick immediately got out. “What happened? What’s in there?”
Maricela answered tearfully, “Cedrick, I was about to call you for a ride.”
“What’s wrong? Why the tears?”
Cedrick bent down, concern in his gaze.
“Nothing… I’m just sad.”
Maricela burst into tears, “Cedrick, that was our home I decorated for so long, the home you gave me. It held so many

memories–countless nights we spent drinking and talking there, all gone now…”
Cedrick glanced back at the car where Lucille poked her head out, flashing him a brilliant smile. He hadn’t expected her to smile, anticipating anger instead. Her chilling grin made him wonder what scheme she was brewing now.
Maricela, oblivious to the car, wiped her tears and opened a large bag. “Cedrick, can I take these dolls home? Please talk to Lucille. They’re not luxury items. Let me keep them? I know you bought them thinking of me–things I love, not what Lucille likes.”
Cedrick instinctively looked back at Lucille. She leaned against the car window frame, still watching them with that smile. Wait–weren’t these the dolls she’d express–delivered to his office? How did Maricela get them?
