My Lantern, My Light

My Lantern, My Light
The evening breeze brushed Sophie, cold and sharp, as she stepped out of Talia’s house. The sun was retreating to its place, and night slowly began to take over.

What had been a bright evening shifted suddenly as she stepped out ,clouds gathered and, without warning, rain began to fall as if the sky itself were warning her to go back.

She barely felt it at first, her heart felt colder than the rain. With quiet steps, she began her journey into the uncertain road ahead .

As she stepped out, tears dripped from her eyes, mixing with the raindrops. Though her face mask seemed to be absorbing them, it could only take the tears and not the bitterness within her.

She stopped in front of Gillfred Cliff and stared at the place where her life had almost ended few weeks ago , the raw memory of that night flashing through her. For a few minutes she stood there as the rain poured heavily on her, then took a final glance and turned to leave.

She had barely taken a few steps away from the cliff when a voice ripped through the rain “Mira!!” The voice screamed out loudly

The shout ripped through the rain ,raw and desperate . Sophie froze, breath caught. Slowly, disbelieving, she turned.

There at the edge of the lane, drenched and clutching a small bag stood Talia. Rain plastered her hair to her face she looked as if the storm had been waiting for her. And the only light revealing her face was that sparkling from the thunder .

For a heartbeat neither moved. Sophie’s mouth opened she has a lot of questions to ask , but then she closed it words failed her.

Talia took a step, then another, erasing the distance like it was nothing. When she reached Sophie, she dropped the little bag at Sophie’s feet in the mud, then wrapped both arms around her firm, unhesitating. Not clumsy, not tentative, but tight and sure, like holding on to something that might vanish.

Rain hammered around them. Thunder cracked, lighting the world in brief silver. They stayed like that for a long minute, breathing each other in.

Sophie finally pulled back a little, stunned and smiling through the wet. “What ….what are you doing?” she asked, voice half laugh, half sob.

“Mira ,” Talia said, voice low and rough from rain and emotion. “Let’s go back together….I’m coming with you.”

Sophie’s knees went weak. She tried to step away, but failed laughter and tears fought inside her. “Talia… what about you?”

“I’ll worry about that later,” Talia said, smiling in the rain. She took Sophie’s hand and wouldn’t let go. “Right now, Let’s focus on how you will return home .”

“No,” Sophie protested, earnest. “Talia ….You don’t have to sacrifice yourself for me. You’ve done more than enough, I won’t let you hurt yourself because of me .”

Talia drew her closer, resting her forehead against Sophie’s. Rain ran in streams down their faces , thunder boomed ,and lightning illuminated them like a private stage.
For a moment the world narrowed to the press of their bodies and the slow matching of their breaths.

“I’ll face it,” Talia whispered. “My fears,my problems, and yours…. I’ll face it all with you. Leaving me here would kill me faster than facing the world again.” Her voice softened. “You say I saved you, but you saved me too. You pulled me out of the dark and shine light in my dark life …You are my light, Mira i will follow my lantern wherever she goes.”

Sophie’s laugh broke into a sob. She threaded her fingers into Talia’s damp hair and held on as if anchoring herself to shore. “You don’t have to…”

“I will,” Talia interrupted, firm but trembling. “Unless you want to kill me yourself before the world does .”

They stood under the furious rain, two silhouettes lit by flashes of thunder. The village slept around them, ordinary and unaware.

The storm raged on, but inside their embrace, Sophie felt something shift. For the first time, she wasn’t running toward the unknown, nor would she face it alone. She was walking into it with someone who had chosen her someone ready to face it all with her, no matter how tough, no matter how hard.
