Who Am I
Talia clutched Sophie tightly, her chest heaving with relief. The happiness in her is that after such a night of blood and terror, she finally wakes up. She closed her eyes, clinging to that fragile moment until Sophie suddenly stiffened beneath her embrace.
With surprising force for someone so weak, Sophie pushed her away. Talia stumbled back, stunned, watching Sophie’s wide, clouded eyes fix on her as though she were a threat.
“Who are you?” Sophie’s voice was hoarse, raw, but the sharpness in her tone cut through Talia like a blade.
For a heartbeat, Talia just froze, blinking at her. “What do you mean…. ? It’s me. I’m the one who saved you,” she said quickly, words tumbling out
She forced a smile stepping closer “Ohhhh maybe you're too weak to recognize my face last night or maybe it was the darkness
Last night, you were hanging on a branch of tree beneath a cliff remember ? It looks like you were pushed by some men in black suit u were covered in blood and bruises i managed to see u on my way home nd I saved you took u to my place nd finally brought u to the hospital i stayed with you all night, still protecting u when the men in suits came back i fought to keep you alive….”
Sophie only stared, suspicion flickering in her eyesbut Talia kept her smile plastered on and kept ranting “Oh I get it? You don’t know how to thank me, right? Do t worry you are welcome you don’t have to just give me ur family number so they will come nd pick u up nd handle ur bills “ Talia said confidently
But Sophie’s expression only twisted further in confusion. She turned her face slightly away, eyes darting across the sterile ward as though searching for a clue, a memory, anything to ground her. Slowly, she looked back at Talia.
“Wait….. w hat is … my name?” Sophie whispered.
Talia blinked again, her smile fade away instantly for a moment she lost her balance and forgot how to walk “Your name?” She gave a short, incredulous laugh, trying to steady her nerves. “Why are you asking me about your name? I should be the one asking you that! I don’t even know who you are I just saved you if you think I'm curious about your name I am not u don’t need to tell me your name !”
“ Yes, I should know my name What is my name “Sophie’s breathing quickened, her hand shooting up to clutch the side of her head. “ I….I can’t remember… it hurts… it hurts so much…”
The monitor beside her bed began to beep erratically, each sound stabbing at Talia’s nerves.
“Hey hey, hello don’t do that, calm down,” Talia urged, leaning closer, her own hands hovering uselessly in the air.
“My name my name what is my name ” Sophie gasped, squeezing her eyes shut grabbing her head tightly almost pulling her hair “Who am I? Who are you? Why can’t I remember…?”
Talia’s throat tightened. Panic surged through her veins. She bolted toward the door, flinging it open so hard it hit the wall. “Doctor! doctor!! !”
Within seconds, the ward filled with rushing footsteps. The morning team returned in a flurry of white coats and clipped voices, crowding around Sophie’s bed.
“What’s happening?” one of the doctors demanded as they walked in
“She …she woke up and started asking… strange questions,” Talia stammered, her words tripping over each other.
Sophie jerked violently against the bed, her legs kicking beneath the sheets. Her hands clawed at the air, tearing at the IV line, the blanket, anything she could grasp. Her hair stuck to her damp forehead as she thrashed, her voice raw with terror.
Two nurses lunged forward, seizing her wrists and forcing them down against the mattress. Another pressed on her legs, straining to hold her steady as the bed rattled under the struggle. “Hold her—don’t let her injure herself!” the doctor barked, his tone sharp over the chaos.
“She said she doesn’t know her own name…she says she can’t remember anything! And it has been holding her head tightly nd screaming since she woke up “ Talia continues
The doctors exchanged sharp looks. One stepped forward, gently pressing Sophie’s shoulders back against the bed. “Calm down, miss. You’re safe. Try to breathe slowly.” He motioned for a nurse. “Sedative, just a small dose.”
Talia stood frozen, her injured palm wrapped in fresh bandages but suddenly clammy again She stood there and watched her crying helplessly nd screaming asking people about who she was
“Amnesia?” one of the younger nurses whispered under her breath.
The older doctor gave a firm nod, his expression unreadable nd face Talia. “It’s possible it is amnesia . The trauma she’s been through the fall, the shock nd the way she hit her head it’s not unusual for the mind to shield itself this way.”
Talia looked at the helplessly lying Soohie on the bed The sedative began to calm her down, her sobs softened into shallow breaths everything went silent as she fell into sleep
Talia gripped the edge of the chair for support. Her heart hammered painfully. Just moments ago, she thought relief had finally found her. But now… it felt it is another beginning of a long episode
The doctor straightened and turned toward Talia. “Miss, we’ll run further tests on her, but for now, don’t press her. If she wakes up and asks questions, answer gently. Forcing memory to return too quickly can do more harm than good.”
Talia nodded mutely, her throat too tight for words.
The ward emptied again, leaving only the quiet hiss of oxygen and the faint hum of the monitor. Sophie had drifted into a sedated sleep, her face slack
Talia sank into the chair, staring at the pale girl on the bed. Last night she had fought to keep her alive, clung to the hope that dawn would bring answers. But now, as the monitors hummed and Sophie slept under the sedative, Talia realized the truth
She had saved a life, yes. But the girl who woke was no longer the same one she had fought for. She wasn’t just a stranger to Talia anymore. She is now a stranger to herself.
