chapter29 mate

As I opened the file, my eyes fell upon the title on the first page: "On the Results of the Treason Trial of the Crescent Pack."

The document was signed by Alpha Frank, and its contents revealed that Crescent Pack Alpha Liam had pleaded guilty to treason. It contained testimonies from Liam and his Beta, as well as their autographs. Additionally, the document bore the signatures of trial participants, including Alpha Leno, Alpha Henry, Alpha William, and Alpha Devon, who agreed to the death penalty for rebel participants such as Crescent Pack Alpha.

My heart froze as I stared at Alpha Devon's signature on the document. His name seemed to sear my eyes with a piercing light.

It turned out that he was involved with the Crescent Pack. Why didn't he ever disclose that to me?

Just as my fingers lightly grazed the file, ready to turn to the second page, a sharp knock at the door startled me.

Who's out there?

I quickly placed the papers back in the file bag and closed the drawer as if nothing had happened.

The knocking persisted, and I turned on the chandelier in the parlor before making my way to the door. As I opened it, I found Catherine and Daisy, the housekeeper, standing outside.

In the darkness, a chill seemed to pass over Catherine's exquisite face, and Daisy, dressed in a dark gray suit that almost blended into the night, scowled at me with hostile eyes.

"You fucking bitch!" Catherine exclaimed, waving her hand and delivering a hard slap across my face.

Caught off guard, I took two steps back, and before I could react, Daisy rushed forward and kicked me to the ground. The tip of her black shoe struck my stomach, causing a sharp pain to radiate through my lower abdomen.

"Where did you and Alpha go?" Catherine demanded, her voice filled with accusation. "And why is he hurt?"

I attempted to answer her, but the pain in my abdomen made it difficult to speak. I managed to utter, "I'm sorry..."

"I knew you'd be a troublesome bitch," Catherine sneered, her eyes filled with disdain. "I will banish you from the tribe, and you will spend the rest of your life in the mines!"

"Please, Catherine, don't deport me," I pleaded.

"Enough is enough, Catherine," Alpha Devon's voice cut through the tension as he appeared at the doorway. His expression was filled with anger as he confronted Catherine. "Why are you here?"

I was taken aback by Alpha Devon's sudden presence, but I silently thanked my luck for having retrieved the document before his return.

"My love," Catherine exclaimed, rushing towards Alpha Devon, attempting to embrace him.

Instead, Alpha Devon pushed her away, his face contorted with disdain. Catherine froze for a moment, her eyes fixed on Alpha Devon's injured abdomen.

"Why didn't you tell me you were hurt?" Catherine asked, her tone filled with concern. "You should be in my room recuperating, not with this bitch! She can't take care of you."

"Who told you about my injury?" Alpha Devon inquired sharply. "Was it Mike?"

"Alpha, please forgive Luna," Daisy interjected, speaking up. "I encountered Mike a few days ago while he was cleaning his car. When I questioned why he was doing it in the middle of the night, he accidentally revealed the information. I immediately reported it to Luna, feeling it was my duty to inform her about your injury."

Alpha Devon's voice turned serious as he addressed Daisy, "So you encouraged Luna to create a scene in my house? Is that your responsibility as a housekeeper?"

"It wasn't Daisy who encouraged me, it was me." Catherine clarified. "As your wife, shouldn't I care about my husband? I wanted to find out how serious your injury is for the Pack and who is responsible for harming you."

Alpha Devon's tone remained cold and stern as he responded, "If you create another scene, all the werewolves in the Pack will know that their Alpha is injured. Now, leave this place."

Catherine, fueled by anger, rushed towards me and grabbed my throat, choking me. "Is it because of this bitch that you got hurt?" she seethed.

"Let her go, Catherine!" Alpha Devon's voice snarled, his anger evident. "Don't make me take action against you."

"Devon, my patience with you has reached its limit," Catherine hissed, her fingernails digging into my skin. "Since this slave arrived, you have completely forgotten our agreement. You've been barking at me because of her, and now you won't even come to my room. Tell me, what is it about her that fascinates you? Is it because of her appearance?"

"Catherine, let her go!" Alpha Devon's voice bristled with warning. "I don't want to repeat myself."

"If you come any closer, I promise to break her neck before you can touch me!" Catherine threatened, tightening her grip around my throat. Unable to breathe, I gasped for air, my mouth opening in desperation.

"What do you want?" Alpha Devon growled, his patience wearing thin.

"I am aware that our marriage was a transaction, and I didn't care about your past lovers. But when this slave entered the picture, she disrupted the balance between us," Catherine spoke with a venomous mix of jealousy and hatred. "Jim, my son, ran away from home and wrote me a letter, saying he couldn't accept his stepfather humiliating him over a slave. He also declared that he would not be returning. It was because of her, the bitch, that I lost my husband and my son. This slave cannot remain in the pack any longer, and I intend to evict her."

"No one will deport her without my orders!" Alpha Devon asserted firmly.

"Or do you want us to get divorced?" Catherine sneered, her tone laced with malice. "Once I take my werewolf, your pack will no longer be the strongest, and let's not forget, you won't receive a cabinet position without my assistance."

"Are you threatening me?" Alpha Devon's voice thundered.

"I am negotiating with you amicably," Catherine provocatively taunted. "If you don't decide, this girl will die right in front of you."

"She cannot leave the pack," Alpha Devon declared resolutely. "If we get divorced, you will receive nothing!"

"You brought this upon me!" Catherine yelled, her grip tightening on my neck. "All because of this slave!"

As Catherine's hand pressed against my throat, and just as I was about to succumb to darkness, I felt a surge of power coursing through me.

Melissa, Melissa!

My wolf surged with fury within me, and without hesitation, I lunged forward, forcefully throwing Catherine to the ground. In a swift retaliation, I struck her across the face, my claws outstretched, tearing through her skin and leaving three deep, bloody scratches that marred her once pristine face.

Catherine let out a piercing scream of pain, clutching her injured face with her hands. Her tear-streaked, bloodied face turned towards Devon, seeking solace and support. But Devon remained unmoved, his expression hardened.

"Get off me, you bitch!" Catherine shrieked at me, her eyes filled with confusion and bewilderment. "Daisy, save me!"

"Aray, let her go," Alpha Devon's commanding voice reached my ears, and it felt like the most beautiful sound in the world.

Why had I never felt this way before?

Is he!

Melissa, cheered as she repeated his name over and over again.

Devon, Devon.

Releasing my grip on Catherine, I slowly turned away from her. Now, it was Alpha Devon who held my gaze. My heart raced faster than I could have imagined as he walked towards me.

In that moment, I recalled the miraculously healed wound in his lower abdomen, which had seemingly vanished overnight. Anna had mentioned that only a mate possessed the power to heal one another.

"Mate," Alpha Devon exclaimed with excitement, the word hanging in the air between us.
