The First Kiss

The First Kiss
Damien's POV

Maya screamed and collapsed to her knees.

I lunged forward to catch her as she fell, not caring that everyone around us was wearing her face. Real or not, Maya was in pain, and that was all that mattered to me.

"Maya, stay with me," I said, pulling her against my chest.

"Damien?" She looked up at me with tears streaming down her cheeks. "Are you real? Please tell me you're real."

Before I could answer, the ancient witch started laughing with Maya's voice coming from every person in the library.

"Oh, how touching," the witch said through dozens of Maya-faces. "Damien, do you want to know the truth about yourself?"

"Don't listen to her," I told Maya, but my heart was pounding. What if I wasn't real either?

"Damien, you're not just a knight who got sent through time," the witch continued. "You're Maya's ideal man, created by her subconscious mind. Think about it - a handsome warrior who appears exactly when a lonely college student needs rescuing? You're every romance novel she's ever read, brought to life by her desperate need for love."

Maya looked at me with growing horror. "Is that true? Did I create you?"

I stared back at her, trying to remember my past, my childhood, my life before that night I'd appeared in her living room. But when I reached for those memories, they felt... strange. Like stories I'd heard rather than things I'd actually lived.

"I don't know," I admitted, and the words felt like knives in my throat.

"Of course you don't know," the witch said sweetly. "Maya, your magic is so powerful that you can create entire personalities complete with fake memories. Damien thinks he's real because you needed him to think he was real."

"No," Maya whispered. "I wouldn't do that. I wouldn't create a person just to... to make myself feel less alone."

"Wouldn't you? Maya, you've been lonely your entire life. Your parents died when you were young. You never had close friends in school. You spent most of your time reading stories about brave knights and magical adventures. When your power awakened, what's the first thing your mind did? It gave you your own personal knight in shining armor."

I felt Maya pulling away from me, doubt filling her eyes. "Damien, if you're not real, then everything we've felt, everything between us..."

"Is real," I said firmly. "Maya, I don't care if I was created by your magic. I don't care if I'm not supposed to exist. What I feel for you is real."

"But how can it be real if you're not real?"

That's when I did the only thing I could think of. I kissed her.

The moment our lips touched, everything changed.

Power exploded from both of us like lightning striking the earth. Blue and gold energy swirled around us in a tornado of light that shattered every remaining window in the library. I could feel Maya's magic flowing into me, and mine flowing into her, creating something stronger than either of us could manage alone.

But more than that, I could feel her memories mixing with mine. Not just thoughts, but real experiences, real emotions, real pain and joy and fear and love. And through that connection, I could feel something that proved everything the witch had said was wrong.

I pulled back from the kiss, both of us glowing with combined magic.

"Maya," I said, my voice shaking with certainty. "I remember now. I remember everything."

"What do you mean?"

"I remember my real past. Not just the story of being a knight, but my actual childhood. My mother teaching me to read. My father showing me how to hold a sword. The day Marcus's creatures first attacked our village. Maya, those aren't made-up memories. They're real."

"But how can you be sure?"

"Because when our magic connected just now, I could feel the difference. Your magic is warm and creative and full of hope. But my memories of the past are cold and hard and full of pain. Maya, you would never create someone with that much genuine hurt in their past. Your magic makes beautiful things. My memories of war and death and losing people I loved - those aren't beautiful. They're just real."

The ancient witch's faces around us were scowling now. "Impossible. You're both deluding yourselves."

"Are we?" I asked. "Then explain this."

I took Maya's hand, and our combined magic flared again. But this time, instead of just light, it created something else. Images began appearing in the air around us - not just any images, but scenes from my actual past that Maya had never seen or heard about.

My mother, singing lullabies in a language Maya didn't know. My first battle, where I'd been so scared I'd thrown up before putting on my armor. The night I'd sat by my dying friend's bedside, promising to protect his family. Hundreds of small, painful, very human moments that were nothing like the idealized knight Maya would have imagined.

"These are my real memories," I said. "Maya, your magic didn't create me. But I think it did do something else."

"What?"

"I think it called me. Across time, across impossible distances, your magic reached back through history and found the one person who could help you. Not because you created me, but because we were meant to find each other."

Maya stared at the memories floating around us. "You mean like... destiny?"

"I mean like love," I said simply. "Maya, I think our magic recognized each other long before we met. I think that's why Marcus was able to send me through time to you specifically. Not because you made me up, but because we were already connected."

The ancient witch shrieked with rage. "ENOUGH! Whether he's real or not doesn't matter! Maya, you're still trapped in your own mind with me, and I'm still going to take control of your body!"

But as she spoke, something was happening to all the Maya-faced people around us. They were starting to change back into their original forms. Dr. Patricia looked like Dr. Patricia again. Roberto looked like Roberto. Even Elena was becoming herself again.

"What's happening?" Maya asked.

I smiled. "Your magic is getting stronger. Strong enough to see through the witch's illusions. Maya, I don't think these people are just projections from your mind. I think they're real, and the witch has been disguising them to make you feel alone."

"You mean Elena is really Elena?"

"I think so. The witch wanted you to believe you were isolated and powerless. But Maya, look around. You're not alone. You never were."

That's when Elena, now back in her own form, grabbed her journal and started reading frantically.

"Maya," she said urgently, "I found something. There's another page in the prophecy, one that was hidden by magic until now."

"What does it say?"

Elena's face went pale as she read. "The Time Child shall not face the First Witch alone. She will be bonded to a Warrior of Light, one whose love for her burns stronger than any magic. Together, they will possess the power to not just defeat the First Witch, but to rewrite the very foundations of magic itself."

The ancient witch's scream of rage shook the entire library. "NO! That part of the prophecy was supposed to stay hidden!"

"Hidden from who?" I asked.

Maya grabbed my hand, our magic flaring even brighter. "Hidden from us. Because if we knew we were bonded, if we knew we were supposed to be together..."

"We'd be too powerful for her to control," I finished.

That's when the witch did something that terrified me more than any dragon or shadow creature ever had.

She smiled.

"Oh, my dear children," she said with genuine warmth. "You still don't understand. I didn't hide that part of the prophecy from you. I hid it from myself."

"What?"

"Maya, Damien, do you want to know why your combined power is so strong? Do you want to know why you're bonded across time itself?" She looked at us with something that might have been affection. "It's because you're not just magically connected. You're family."

The world seemed to stop spinning.

"Damien," the witch continued, "meet your many-times-great-granddaughter. Maya, say hello to your ancestor. You two aren't just bonded by love. You're bonded by blood."
