The Ultimate Sacrifice

The Ultimate Sacrifice
Sam's POV (Guardian)

I'm burning alive from the inside as Chief Kellerman changes into the most powerful shadow walker in existence, and I have exactly thirty seconds to save the world.
The spiritual energy the ghosts gave me is tearing my body apart, but it's also showing me things no live person has ever seen. I can see into other worlds, other realities, other timelines.
And in every single one, the shadow walkers win.
Except for one reality. One option where everything ends differently.
But it forces me to do something that goes against every instinct I have as a protector of children.
"Sarah!" I scream at Kellerman's daughter as the shadow walker takes control of her mother's body. "I need you to possess me!"
"What?" Sarah's ghost stares at me in horror. "Detective Rivera, I can't do that. I'm not a shadow walker."
"You don't have to be evil to possess someone. You just have to be stronger than their will to resist."
"But why would you want me to possess you?"
"Because I've seen the future where we win, and it only happens if I'm not in control of this power."
The shadow walker wearing Chief Kellerman's body laughs with a voice like broken glass. "How touching. The detective wants to give up control to save everyone."
"Shut up," I tell it. "Sarah, listen to me. When you possess my body, you'll have access to all the spiritual power the ghosts gave me. But more importantly, you'll be able to use it without burning up."
"Why would I be able to control it when you can't?"
"Because you're already dead. The power was meant for spirits, not living people. I was just the delivery system."
Sarah looks between me and her mother's possessed body. "Detective Rivera, if I possess you, what happens to your soul?"
"I don't know. Maybe I die. Maybe I get pushed into the background like your mom. Maybe I disappear completely."
"I can't ask you to take that risk."
"You're not asking. I'm offering."
The shadow walker in Kellerman's body starts getting larger, its dark energy spreading outward like an infection. Cars in the street stop working. Street lights explode. Windows crack in every house on the block.
"Sarah, we're out of time!"
"Detective Rivera, there's something else you need to know. If I possess your body and use that power, I won't be Sarah Kellerman anymore."
"What do you mean?"
"The spiritual energy will change me into something new. Something that's never existed before."
"What kind of something?"
"A ghost with the power of a living person. I'll be able to affect the physical world in ways no spirit has ever been able to do."
"That sounds like exactly what we need."
"But I'll lose my memories of being human. I won't remember my mother, my life, my death. I'll just be pure protective instinct focused on saving children."
I look at Chief Kellerman, who is fighting desperately to regain control of her body as the shadow walker gets stronger.
"Sarah, your mother has been carrying guilt about your death for fifteen years. She's spent her whole life trying to make up for not being able to save you."
"I know."
"If you save the world using her body as a base, if you become this new kind of guardian spirit, then her sacrifice will mean something. Her guilt will finally be justified."
Sarah's ghost form starts shining brighter. "You really think this will work?"
"I've seen the timeline where it works. But Sarah, you have to possess me right now, while the power is still unstable. Once it settles into my body, it'll be too late."
"And you're willing to disappear forever so I can become this guardian thing?"
"I became a detective to save children. If disappearing is what it takes to save every child on Earth, then that's what I'll do."
Sarah floats toward me, her shadowy hands reaching for my head. "Detective Rivera, thank you for giving me the chance to finally protect someone."
"Thank you for giving me the chance to finally save everyone."
Sarah's ghost form merges with my body, and the feeling is incredible. Instead of burning up from spiritual energy, I suddenly feel calm and contained. But I can feel my own consciousness being pushed deeper and deeper into the background.
"Sarah?" I whisper with my own voice, but I know she's the one directing my body now.
"I'm here, Detective Rivera. But you're right. I'm changing. I can feel my human memories fading."
"Before you lose them completely, there's something you need to know about fighting this shadow walker."
"What?"
"It's not just possessing your mother. It's possessing the connection between you and her. The love you share is what's giving it power."
"Then how do I fight it?"
"By loving her enough to let her go."
Sarah-in-my-body turns toward the shadow walker wearing her mother's face. The thing has grown to the size of a building now, towering over the neighborhood like a living nightmare.
"Hello, little girl," it says in Chief Kellerman's voice. "Come to save your mommy?"
"I've come to free her," Sarah answers, and I can hear that her voice is already changing. Less human, more alien.
"You can't free her. She's part of me now. Her guilt, her love, her need to protect you - all of it belongs to me."
"You're wrong. Her love doesn't belong to you."
"Then who does it belong to?"
Sarah raises my hands, and spiritual energy runs from my fingers like liquid lightning. "It belongs to every child who needs protecting."
The energy slams into the shadow walker, but instead of destroying it, something surprising happens.
The thing splits in half again.
But this time, one half returns to Chief Kellerman's normal size, while the other half starts melting.
"Mom?" Sarah calls out.
Chief Kellerman blinks and shakes her head like she's waking up from a nightmare. "Sarah? Is that you?"
"It's me, Mom. But I'm different now."
"Different how?"
I feel my awareness fading as Sarah completes her transformation into the guardian spirit. But before I disappear totally, I see something that fills me with hope.
Sarah isn't losing her human memories after all. The love between her and her mother is so strong that it's grounding her humanity even as she becomes something supernatural.
"Mom, I need you to do something for me."
"Anything, baby."
"I need you to become my partner in the living world. I can protect children as a spirit, but I need someone with a badge and authority to protect them as humans."
"You mean work together? Like a supernatural police team?"
"Exactly. Is that something you'd want to do?"
Chief Kellerman wipes tears from her eyes. "Sarah, I've wanted to work with you again since the day you died."
As Sarah takes full control of my body, I feel myself being gently pushed into a different kind of life. Not death, but not life either. I'm becoming something like a conscience, a voice that can guide Sarah when she needs help making difficult choices.
It's not what I expected, but it's not bad either.
"Detective Rivera?" Sarah's voice echoes in my mind. "Are you still there?"
"I'm here. Different, but here."
"Good. Because I think we're going to need all the help we can get."
"Why?"
"Because when the shadow walker split in half, the other half didn't just dissolve. It escaped."
"Where did it go?"
"I don't know. But I can sense it's already possessing someone new. Someone far away from here."
Chief Kellerman walks over to us. "Sarah, what do we do now?"
"Now we hunt, Mom. We track down every shadow walker that escaped from Tidewaters and we stop them before they can hurt any more children."
"Just the three of us?"
"Just the three of us."
I would have smiled if I still had a real body. A supernatural mother-daughter police team, led by the ghost of a detective who gave up her life to save the world.
It's not how I thought my story would end.
But it's not really a finish at all.
It's a beginning.
"Sarah," I whisper from whatever realm I now live in, "where do we start?"
"With Lisa Chen. She's still out there somewhere, and she's still in danger."
"Any idea where to look?"
"I can sense her spiritual signature. She's about three hundred miles north of here, in a town called Millbrook."
Chief Kellerman checks her gun and badge. "Then that's where we're going."
"Mom, are you sure you're ready for this? Fighting supernatural creatures isn't like normal police work."
"Honey, after fifteen years of living with guilt and regret, fighting monsters sounds like a vacation."
Sarah laughs, and for a moment she sounds fully human again. "Alright then. Let's go save some children."
As we head toward Chief Kellerman's police car, I feel something that makes me worry.
The shadow walker that fled isn't just possessing one person.
It's taking an entire town.
And that town is about to become ground zero for a supernatural attack that will make Tidewaters look like a practice run.
But for the first time since I found Marcus's body on the beach, I'm not afraid.
Because we're not just three people fighting an impossible battle anymore.
We're a family.
And families don't give up on each other.
Ever.
"Detective Rivera," Sarah says as we drive toward our first real case, "thank you for showing me that sometimes the best way to save someone is to trust them to save themselves."
"Thank you for showing me that death isn't the end of the story."
"What do you think comes next?"
I consider the question from my strange new position between life and death.
"I think we're about to find out just how many children need saving."
"All of them?"
"All of them."
As we drive into the night, going toward whatever horror awaits us in Millbrook, I realize that my real career as a detective is just starting.
And this time, I have backup that can't be killed, possessed, or altered.
This time, we might actually win.
