Chapter 26 KAEL'S REVELATION
Kael's POV
I found Isabel in the training hall long after midnight and she was practicing defensive techniques with an intensity that spoke of emotional turmoil rather than physical exercise. Sweat dampened her silver-blonde hair and her violet eyes held a distant quality that meant she was processing something difficult.
"You're going to injure yourself," I said from the doorway and watched as she spun around with supernatural speed before recognizing me.
"I needed to clear my head," Isabel replied, lowering her defensive stance but not relaxing completely. "After everything with Seraphina and Aria and watching Logan's daughter grow up, I can't stop thinking about the foundation of lies that brought us all here."
I stepped into the training space and felt the familiar pull of attraction mixed with guilt that had characterized our relationship since the beginning. Six months of working alongside Isabel had transformed initial protectiveness into something far more dangerous and I could no longer pretend my feelings were merely strategic.
"Isabel, we need to talk," I said and watched her expression shift from exhaustion to wariness.
"That tone usually precedes something I won't like," she observed and moved to grab a towel while creating physical distance between us.
"I've been lying to you," I said bluntly because evasion would only make this worse. "Not about my feelings but about how this started and you deserve the complete truth before we go any further."
Isabel's omega perception flared and I felt her ability sweep through me like a psychic touch that assessed my emotional state with uncomfortable accuracy. "You're terrified," she said quietly. "Whatever you're about to tell me genuinely scares you."
"Because I'm afraid of losing you," I admitted and the vulnerability in my voice surprised even me. "Isabel, Logan sent me to find you after your banishment and he knew you'd need protection and guidance and he specifically chose me because he trusted I'd keep you safe."
The color drained from Isabel's face and her omega abilities created a feedback loop of shock and betrayal that I could feel echoing between us. "Everything between us was manipulation?" she asked and her voice held the fragile quality that preceded breaking.
"No," I said urgently and closed the distance between us despite her defensive posture. "The initial contact was orchestrated but everything after was genuine and Isabel, I fell in love with you despite Logan's plan, not because of it."
"How am I supposed to believe that?" Isabel demanded and tears spilled down her cheeks while her hands clenched into fists. "Kael, my entire life has been people making choices for me and deciding what I need and manipulating circumstances to achieve their goals and now you're telling me the one relationship I thought was built on honesty started with deception?"
"I know," I said and reached for her hands even as she pulled away. "And Isabel, I should have told you months ago but I was terrified of this exact reaction and I chose my feelings over your right to informed choice and that was selfish and wrong."
Isabel's omega perception intensified and I felt her abilities digging deeper into my emotional landscape, searching for any hint of continued manipulation or ulterior motives. The psychic examination was invasive and uncomfortable and necessary.
"You're telling the truth about your feelings," Isabel said finally and her voice held wonder mixed with confusion. "I can feel that your love is genuine but Kael, how do I trust anything built on a foundation of lies?"
"You don't," I replied honestly. "Not immediately and Isabel, trust is something I'll have to rebuild through consistent honesty and transparent action and giving you the power to make informed choices about our relationship going forward."
"I need time," Isabel said and stepped back while creating emotional distance that hurt worse than physical separation. "Kael, I need to process this without your presence influencing my decisions."
"I understand," I said even though every instinct screamed to fight for her. "Take whatever time you need."
I turned to leave and had almost reached the door when Isabel's voice stopped me. "Kael, do you know what Logan's endgame was? Why did he wanted you specifically to find me?"
I faced her again and saw the tactical intelligence that made Isabel such an effective leader surfacing beneath her emotional vulnerability. "He said you'd need someone who understood betrayal," I admitted. "Someone who'd been manipulated by family and who'd chosen principle over power and Logan believed I'd help you become strong enough to challenge the systems that destroyed him."
"That's not protection," Isabel said and her violet eyes blazed with sudden realization. "That's preparation for war and Kael, Logan wasn't trying to keep me safe, he was training me to replace him."
The insight hit me like a physical blow because Isabel was right and I'd been so focused on my growing feelings that I'd missed the larger manipulation inherent in Logan's plan. He'd orchestrated my connection with Isabel not just for her protection but to shape her into the leader he'd failed to become.
"What if everything between us is just another piece of his strategy?" Isabel asked and her voice broke on the question. "What if even your genuine feelings are responses he predicted and manipulated into existence?"
I had no answer because the possibility terrified me as much as it did her and we stood in the training hall surrounded by the wreckage of certainty while trying to determine what was real and what was another layer of Logan's posthumous manipulation.
"I love you," I said finally because it was the only truth I knew with absolute certainty. "Whatever else is uncertain, that's real."
Isabel closed her eyes and I watched her omega abilities create visible ripples in the air as she processed my emotional truth. When she opened them again, her expression held determination mixed with fear.
"Then prove it," Isabel said. "Kael, help me figure out what Logan's complete plan was and what role your feelings and mine play in his larger strategy and once we understand the full manipulation, we can decide if there's anything genuine left to build on."
"Agreed," I said and felt hope kindle despite the uncertainty.
Isabel moved closer and for a moment I thought she might kiss me, but instead she placed her hand over my heart and used her omega perception to create a connection that bypassed words entirely. I felt her fear, her hope, her love, and her determination to find truth regardless of pain.
"Whatever we discover," Isabel said quietly, "we face it together."
"Together," I agreed.
But as I left the training hall, I couldn't shake the feeling that Logan's manipulation went deeper than either of us suspected and that the truth we were seeking might destroy the fragile connection we'd built, and somewhere in the darkness, I heard what sounded like Logan's laughter, as if he'd anticipated this moment and planned for it.
