Chapter 14
Else when…
Trevor sat up in his bed, startled awake by a bad dream. He reached his right arm across the bed and touched his wife. I’m fine. Even millionaires have nightmares. Reassured, he planted a soft kiss on her cheek and smiled as she moaned delightfully in her sleep, appreciating her husband’s love from a different realm. He smiled down at the picture she painted, waited, then planted another kiss, stirring up a longer moan. Content, he got out of bed and strode to unlock the door to his balcony. He took in the scenery from above with awe, still amazed at how much he had achieved. He spied his car in the driveway, sitting peacefully like the loyal servant it was. To his left, away from the driveway, behind a hedge fence was the pool, glistening softly in the pale moonlight, motioning quietly for him to make an ambitious dive from way up on his balcony. He observed the rest of his estate with a deep satisfaction. Only years ago, his life had seemed bleak, stripped of all the auspiciousness his younger self had possessed. But here we are. Doing very well to say the least.
He smiled when he heard the sleepy voice behind her. “And there he stood, the lord of the manor, surveying his property with an intense frown, wondering why the little ants he owned slept soundly instead of making him more money.”
“I may need a restraining order to keep you from sneaking up on me all the time, you villain”
His wife wrapped her arms around him, and nestled her head on his shoulders while hugging him for warmth. “Trouble sleeping?”
“As always. More so when I’m left balancing on a small area while you sleep soundly on your side.”
“You might want to check the marriage arrangements babe; I am entitled to that much.” She hugged tighter. “You okay?”
“Absolutely," he grabbed her arms. “We did good didn’t we?”
She opened her eyes to gaze at the view beside her husband. “Well you did. To be honest if you lost all this I’d leave you for another rich man.”
He chuckled and brought her around to face him. “I love you Chris.”
The two lovers shared a kiss as the dew came softly down on them in the early hours of the morning. The past seemed a distant memory, soon to be lost in depths of forgotten ones, pushed further down by the many emerging new memories.
