Into Formation

Into Formation
Cassian

They’re still in the clearing when I reach them. Dusk has almost finished settling, the light thinning to a low blue wash that stretches the shadows long across broken stone. Allison stands close to Christopher, their heads angled toward each other, voices quiet. Whatever happened out here has done its work. I can see it in Christopher’s posture; he appears straighter and his magic more stable. I can see it in Allison, too, the way her weight rests evenly on both feet, like she’s already listening for what comes next.
“It's time,” I say.
They both look up at once. Kael and Evander fall in behind me without comment. The Shadow Realm has shifted into a state it takes on before violence. The corridors feel like they are listening, and the air is pulled tight. Rhaziel is already waiting; he has a plan, and it must happen now.
“Come on,” I tell them. “Just need to suit you up.”
Allison nods immediately, while Christopher glances at her first, then follows. I guide them into the armour chamber, where the rest of us had just finished suiting up. Two more sets lay out, ready and waiting for them. They're made of dark leather reinforced with layered stitching, flexible enough to move in, warded just enough to turn a blade or deflect a spell if it comes to that. They're efficient and built for survival. They are something I know now that Rhaziel has specially sourced for each of us today. Rhaziel stands near the far wall, hands folded behind his back. He watches as Allison runs her fingers along the material softly and nods when she gives him a smile of approval.
Christopher steps forward, lifts his set, and inclines his head. “I’ll change.”
He disappears into the adjoining room without ceremony. Allison stays where she is, allowing us to help her change. Kael reaches for the first fastening. Evander takes the shoulder guard. I kneel to secure the bracers, fingers working from habit. The leather is warm, supple, already shaped to her. She doesn’t flinch as we fit it, doesn’t pull away. She breathes steadily and lets us do the work. Rhaziel speaks while we move.
“No separation,” he says. “No improvisation. No bait.”
“I know,” Allison replies.
Rhaziel’s gaze sharpens. “Say it.”
She stills. “I won’t sacrifice myself.”
The words are precisely what he wants to hear, but her thoughts say otherwise. I feel it brush my mind the moment I stand.
I would die for any and all of you.
I push back gently, firm as stone.
Don’t do that, sweetheart.
Her breath stutters once. Then she nods, like something inside her has been acknowledged and set aside. Kael tightens the final strap and steps back. Evander rests his hand briefly between her shoulders. I check every fastening twice, just to be sure. Christopher returns moments later, armour fitted, eyepatch settled, stance recalibrated. Rhaziel surveys us again.
“Good,” he says. “Now we move.”
The shadows gather at his feet and fold upward, swallowing all of us whole.

The shadow travel releases us all at once. Cold air hits my face, and damp earth squelches underfoot. Pine, stone and wind slide between the trees. We stand just inside the tree line, the forest pressed close and dark ahead of us. The sky hangs low, clouds swallowing the last thin line of dusk. The compound sits somewhere beyond the trees. I can’t see it yet, not properly, but there’s a flicker of light between trunks and a faint murmur of voices carries on the wind. Enough to tell me we’re facing the right direction. Council structures never hide well. They sit on land like they expect it to move out of their way. We all fall into formation without speaking. I take point. Christopher stays close to Allison, just off my right. His attention moves constantly from the ground, the trees, and her position. Kael and Evander widen out, flanks loose but ready. Rhaziel brings up the rear, his presence heavy as he dims his sigils. Then we start forward. Our boots barely disturb the ground. There's no light and no magic to give us away. I watch the slope of the land, the way sound might travel, the places where one wrong step would echo too far. The closer we get, the more familiar it feels. The Council's work leaves patterns behind. Things like trees thinning where they shouldn’t, the Earth packed too evenly in places and silence settling in pockets instead of drifting away. I lift my hand, and everyone stops. I crouch and study the ground ahead. The soil shifts subtly, texture changing just enough to catch my eye. Old magic bleeds into the dirt here, woven deep and left to sleep. I can feel it when I get close, a low hum under my skin. I angle two fingers left.

Christopher moves immediately, guiding Allison with him. Kael mirrors the shift, and Evander slides to cover the rear. We continue forward. The compound comes into view through the trees. Solid squared walls, lines too straight for nature, the land dips inward around it, hinting at reinforced levels beneath the surface. There are no guards in sight... Pressure rolls through me faintly. Allison’s presence tightens behind me. Christopher adjusts his stance, protective without breaking formation. Rhaziel eases our pace with a thought, the shadows responding to him and surrounding us. The wards are waking, I can feel it. We stop again at the edge of the tree line. From here, the ground slopes down toward a maintenance access hidden by brush and stone. It's old, neglected and precisely the kind of place people stop checking. I glance back once, and Allison meets my eyes. Christopher stands at her side, balanced and ready. Kael’s mouth curves faintly, violence held in check. Evander’s focus doesn’t waver. Rhaziel watches the compound like it’s already finished. Everything is where it should be. I face forward and lift my hand, and we move again, slow and silent, the space between us and the compound closing one careful step at a time. The night presses in as we advance.
