Chapter 67 Collateral
Chapter 67 Collateral
"The Castellanos are finished."
Marco's voice came through the comm system at dawn, waking Seraphina and Lorenzo from restless sleep. His rough tone carried urgency that meant something catastrophic had happened while they'd been unconscious.
Lorenzo was out of bed instantly, pulling on clothes with military efficiency. "Define finished."
"Public exposure. Financial crimes. Tax evasion. Corruption charges." Marco's words came rapid-fire. "Every piece of dirty business the Castellanos have been involved in for the past twenty years…released simultaneously to Italian prosecutors, Interpol, and major media outlets. Complete organizational destruction without a single bullet fired."
Seraphina sat up, understanding dawning with cold clarity. "Volkov."
"Exactly." Lorenzo moved to his laptop, already pulling up news feeds. "He's not attacking me directly. He's dismantling my allied families through public exposure. Forcing them to choose between loyalty to me and their own survival."
"The Castellanos are one of your oldest alliances," Marco continued through the comm. "If they fall to legal prosecution because of intelligence Volkov provided…"
"Then every other family starts questioning whether loyalty to me is worth the risk of similar exposure," Lorenzo finished grimly. "It's elegant. Destroys my support network without requiring him to fight battles he might lose."
Seraphina moved to see the laptop screen over Lorenzo's shoulder. News articles were already breaking across Italian media, respected business family exposed as front for money laundering, tax fraud, political corruption. Photos of the Castellano patriarch being led away in handcuffs. Financial records proving decades of illegal operations.
"How did Volkov get this intelligence?" she asked.
"Probably the same way he got your psychiatric records," Lorenzo said. "Bought it from someone with access. Or cultivated informant within Castellano operations over years. The specifics don't matter. What matters is he's weaponizing it at exact moment when my defensive attention is divided by your decision."
The accusation landed subtly but clearly. Lorenzo was fighting war on multiple fronts, Volkov's assault, Seraphina's potential departure, and now the public dismantlement of his allied families. And all of it was coordinated to overwhelm his capacity to respond effectively.
"This is because of Vienna," Seraphina said quietly. "He's accelerating his timeline because I met with him. Proving he can strike without warning while I'm still deciding."
"Probably." Lorenzo pulled up more intelligence feeds. "The Castellanos are requesting emergency meeting. They want to discuss terms of separating from my organization before Volkov releases more damaging information."
"So they're already breaking alliance."
"They're protecting themselves," Lorenzo corrected. "Which is rational response when associating with me brings legal destruction. I can't blame them for choosing survival over loyalty."
Marco's voice came through again. "Boss, there's more. Volkov released statement to organized crime networks explaining why he attacked the Castellanos specifically."
"Show me."
A document appeared on Lorenzo's screen, professionally formatted, distributed through encrypted channels to every major criminal organization in Europe. Seraphina read over his shoulder:
"To interested parties:
The public exposure of the Castellano family's criminal operations represents targeted response to their continued support of Lorenzo De Luca's organization. This action demonstrates that:
1\. Alliance with De Luca brings legal vulnerability, not protection
2\. Information sufficient to destroy any organization can be obtained and weaponized
3\. Future attacks will target additional families who maintain loyalty to De Luca
This campaign will continue until De Luca's support network is sufficiently weakened to force his acceptance of peace terms. Families who distance themselves from De Luca's organization will not be targeted. Those who maintain alliance risk similar exposure.
The choice is yours.
V. Volkov"
"He's giving them ultimatum," Seraphina said. "Abandon Lorenzo or face destruction."
"And he's doing it publicly so everyone in our world sees the cost of remaining loyal to me." Lorenzo's voice went cold. "It's effective. Brutal. And exactly the kind of strategic thinking that's kept him alive for twenty years."
The comm buzzed again. Different voice this time, older, carrying weight of authority and barely controlled fury.
"De Luca. This is Castellano. We need to talk. Now."
Lorenzo accepted the video call. Giovanni Castellano appeared on screen, patriarch of the family, sixty-five years old, looking like he'd aged a decade overnight. Behind him, Seraphina could see the expensive office of his legitimate business, now swarming with investigators boxing up records.
"Giovanni," Lorenzo said carefully. "I'm sorry about…"
"Don't." Castellano's voice cut through false sympathy. "Don't apologize when we both know this is because of our alliance with you. Volkov made that explicit in his statement. He attacked us to weaken you."
"Yes. And I'll provide resources for legal defense, help relocating family members who…"
"We don't want your resources," Castellano interrupted. "We want distance. Immediate and public distance from your organization. Announcement that the Castellano family is severing all business relationships with De Luca interests."
Lorenzo absorbed that with visible control. "That's your right. I won't pressure you to maintain alliance when it's destroying your family."
"It's not just our right…it's survival." Castellano leaned closer to his camera, his expression carrying accusation beyond just this attack. "And Lorenzo? Everyone knows why Volkov is escalating now. Why he's hitting our families instead of directly assaulting your operations."
"Explain," Lorenzo said quietly.
"Your wife." Castellano's voice went hard. "Volkov offered her exit. She's been negotiating with him. Meeting him secretly. And now he's demonstrating to all of us exactly what happens when you're too distracted by personal complications to defend your alliances properly."
Seraphina felt every eye in the virtual room shift to her. Castellano's accusation wasn't just about the Vienna meeting, it was about her entire presence in Lorenzo's life being the vulnerability Volkov was exploiting.
"My wife's choices are not your concern," Lorenzo said, his voice carrying warning.
"They are when those choices determine whether our families survive Volkov's assault!" Castellano's control cracked. "She met with him. In Vienna. Yesterday. While you were distracted preparing defenses, she was negotiating exit terms with the man trying to destroy all of us."
"How did you…" Seraphina started.
"Because Volkov made sure everyone knew," Castellano said bitterly. "Sent documentation of your meeting to every family allied with Lorenzo. Photos of you sitting across from him in that café. Transcript of conversation about ending the war by removing yourself from Lorenzo's life. He wanted us all to understand that your presence is the weapon he's using against us."
Lorenzo's jaw tightened. "That's enough…"
"It's not enough!" Castellano stood, his entire body radiating fury. "My family is destroyed. My children face criminal prosecution. My businesses are being dismantled. And it's happening because Volkov knows that Lorenzo De Luca is so emotionally compromised by his purchased wife that he can't defend his alliances effectively."
"Purchased wife," Seraphina repeated, the words landing like slap.
"That's what you are," Castellano said cruelly. "Auction house acquisition who's been shaped into playing role of partner. And now that role-playing is costing the rest of us everything because Volkov understands Lorenzo's weakness better than Lorenzo does."
"Giovanni." Lorenzo's voice went dangerous. "You're grieving the loss of your family's security. I understand that. But speak about my wife with disrespect again and we'll have different conversation."
"What conversation?" Castellano challenged. "The one where you defend her honor while my family burns? The one where you prioritize your emotional attachment over strategic alliance that's kept both our organizations safe for fifteen years? That conversation?"
Lorenzo didn't answer immediately. Seraphina watched the calculation in his eyes, weighing loyalty to her against loyalty to families who'd supported him for years, measuring personal commitment against organizational survival.
"The council is meeting tonight," Castellano continued, his voice slightly calmer. "Emergency session. Every family that's maintained alliance with you. And we're going to discuss whether continued support of your leadership is viable when your personal life has become primary weapon Volkov uses against all of us."
"That's your right," Lorenzo said carefully.
"It's not about rights…it's about survival." Castellano's expression shifted to something between pity and contempt. "You're a good leader, Lorenzo. Brilliant strategist. But you've made fatal mistake of caring about something Volkov can use to destroy not just you, but everyone loyal to you." He paused. "The council will likely demand choice: your wife or your organization. You can't protect both when one is weapon being used against the other."
The call ended. Lorenzo stared at the blank screen, his expression carved into stone.
Seraphina felt the weight of Castellano's words settling into her bones. She wasn't just complicating Lorenzo's personal life, she was actively undermining his organizational stability. Her presence was the vulnerability Volkov exploited. Her potential departure was the threat that kept allied families questioning their loyalty.
"I should leave," she said quietly. "Accept Volkov's offer. Remove myself as weapon he's using against you."
"No." Lorenzo's response came immediate and absolute. "That's exactly what he wants. You leaving doesn't end this…it just gives him decisive victory that destroys me completely while pretending it's your choice for freedom."
"But the Castellanos…"
"Are protecting themselves, which is rational." Lorenzo turned to face her. "But they're also being manipulated by Volkov's public relations campaign. He's making it seem like you're the problem when the actual problem is his systematic assault on my allied families."
"Except I am part of the problem," Seraphina said. "My meeting with Volkov, my consideration of his offer, my presence in your life at all…it's all giving him leverage he wouldn't otherwise have."
"Your presence in my life is also what makes it worth defending," Lorenzo countered. "I spent twenty years building organization as shield against loss. Being alone but powerful. Being strategic but empty. You changed that. And yes, that change creates vulnerability. But it also creates meaning beyond just survival."
Marco's voice interrupted through the comm. "Boss, we're getting reports of similar exposure campaigns being prepared against the Romano family and the Benedetti family. Volkov isn't stopping with the Castellanos. He's planning systematic dismantlement of your entire support network."
Lorenzo swore viciously. "How many families is he targeting?"
"Preliminary intelligence suggests six. All families who've maintained strong loyalty to you. All with sufficient dirty business that public exposure would force them to break alliance or face legal destruction."
"So by tonight's council meeting, I could be facing demands from multiple families to choose between Seraphina and organizational survival." Lorenzo's tactical mind was clearly racing through implications. "That's…effective. Brutal. And exactly the kind of coordinated assault that works because it doesn't require him to win battles. Just make remaining loyal to me too expensive."
Seraphina felt the trap closing. Volkov had orchestrated perfect storm, her potential departure, the assault on allied families, the council meeting where Lorenzo would be forced to choose. Every piece designed to isolate him, weaken him, make him vulnerable to peace terms he'd never otherwise accept.
"The council meeting," she said. "What will they demand?"
"Probably what Castellano suggested," Lorenzo admitted. "Choice between you and the organization. Framed as my personal attachment being too expensive for everyone else to subsidize."
"And if you refuse?"
"Then families start breaking alliance anyway. Deciding their survival matters more than loyalty to leader who can't protect them because he's distracted by personal complications." Lorenzo's voice carried bitter recognition. "Volkov has backed me into position where keeping you costs me everything I've built. And leaving you gives him exactly what he wants. There's no option that doesn't destroy something essential."
"So what do you do?"
Lorenzo was quiet for long moment, his expression cycling through options that all ended badly. "I survive it. Like I've survived everything else. By being ruthless enough to make decisions others can't make."
"Meaning?"
"Meaning the council meeting tonight will determine whether I lead this organization or whether I walk away from it entirely to keep you." Lorenzo's voice went cold with resolve. "And I'll make whichever choice serves the greater good, even if it destroys me personally."
Seraphina stared at him, understanding the calculation behind the words. He was preparing to choose the organization over her if the council forced it. Preparing to sacrifice personal happiness for organizational survival. Preparing to prove he could still make ruthless decisions even when they cost him everything that mattered.
"You'd actually do it," she said quietly. "You'd choose them over me if they demanded it."
"I'd choose survival of hundreds of people over my personal attachment to one person," Lorenzo corrected. "That's not the same as choosing them over you. It's choosing responsibility over desire. Duty over love. The way leaders have to choose when both options destroy something essential."
"That's very cold."
"That's leadership in world where emotion is liability." Lorenzo pulled her close despite the calculated words. "But Seraphina…if the council forces that choice, if I have to lose you to keep the organization stable…I need you to understand it's not because you don't matter. It's because you matter so much that keeping you while everything else burns would dishonor what we've built."
"That's still choosing them over me," Seraphina said against his chest.
"I know." Lorenzo's voice cracked slightly. "And I'll hate myself for it. And I'll spend rest of my life knowing I failed the only person I've genuinely loved since Giulia. But I'll survive it. Because surviving impossible losses is what I do."
They stood together in the morning light that felt like countdown to loss neither of them wanted but both could see approaching with inevitable momentum.
Marco's comm buzzed again. "Boss, additional development. The Romano family is requesting to address the council meeting tonight. They have demands they want to present formally."
"What demands?" Lorenzo asked.
"They're requesting…" Marco paused, clearly uncomfortable delivering this message. "...removal of Mrs. De Luca from your household. Immediate and permanent separation. They're framing it as organizational security measure necessary to eliminate Volkov's primary leverage point."
"Removal," Seraphina repeated. "They're demanding my exile."
"They're demanding what they think is necessary to protect their families from Volkov's assault," Marco corrected carefully. "Whether they're right or wrong, they genuinely believe your presence in Lorenzo's life is weapon being used to destroy them."
Lorenzo released Seraphina, moved to his communication systems, started coordinating responses to crisis that was metastasizing faster than he could contain it. "What's the status of other families? Are they supporting Romano's demand or resisting it?"
"Mixed," Marco admitted. "Some families are supportive…seeing removal of Mrs. De Luca as tactical necessity. Others are resistant…viewing it as capitulation to Volkov's manipulation. But consensus is building that something has to change before more families are destroyed."
"So by tonight, I'm facing council full of families demanding I choose between Seraphina and organizational stability." Lorenzo's voice went flat. "With Volkov's assault still coming in…" He checked his watch. "...twelve hours. Perfect timing to maximize pressure from every direction."
Seraphina felt the walls closing in. The Vienna meeting had accelerated everything. Volkov's assault on the Castellanos had proven the cost of remaining loyal to Lorenzo. And now the council, the families who'd supported Lorenzo for years, were preparing to demand her removal as condition of continued alliance.
She could leave voluntarily, take Volkov's offer, remove herself as weapon before the council forced it. Or she could stay, fight for relationship with Lorenzo, and watch his entire organizational structure collapse because allied families couldn't afford the cost of her presence.
Neither option was winning. Both led to loss. Just different forms of it.
"I'm going to the council meeting," she said suddenly.
"Absolutely not," Lorenzo responded immediately.
"They're demanding my removal. I have right to hear their arguments and respond to their accusations." Seraphina's voice steadied with determination. "If I'm the problem they're trying to solve, I should be present for the discussion about whether I'm actually problem or just convenient scapegoat."
"It's not safe…"
"Nothing is safe anymore," Seraphina interrupted. "But hiding while they discuss my fate makes me look guilty of being the weakness they're accusing me of being. If I face them directly, if I defend my position…maybe I change the narrative from 'Lorenzo's emotional vulnerability' to 'strategic partner who deserves to stay.'"
Lorenzo studied her face, clearly calculating risks against potential benefits. "They might not let you speak. Might demand your removal without hearing your defense."
"Then at least I tried." Seraphina moved to her closet, started pulling out clothes appropriate for facing council of crime families. "And if they demand my exile anyway, I'll have looked them in the eye and made them justify why my presence is more dangerous than Volkov's systematic assault on their organizations."
Marco's voice came through the comm, addressing Lorenzo. "Sir, if Mrs. De Luca attends the council meeting, we'll need additional security. The families will see her presence as provocation."
"Or as courage," Lorenzo said quietly, his expression shifting to something like pride. "Let her come. Let them see she's not hiding. Let them understand that removing her won't be simple matter of Lorenzo choosing organization over personal attachment…it will be organizational decision that she gets to contest."
"That's risky," Marco warned.
"Everything is risky now," Lorenzo echoed Seraphina's earlier words. "At least this way, we control the optics of her departure if it comes to that. She goes down fighting, not hiding. That matters for how history remembers this moment."
The decision made, they spent the next hours preparing for council meeting that would determine whether Seraphina stayed or was exiled from Lorenzo's life by organizational mandate.
By the time evening arrived, Seraphina stood in formal dress that looked like armor, wearing her mother's necklace that Volkov had returned, preparing to face families who'd decided she was too expensive to keep.
"Remember," Lorenzo said quietly as they prepared to leave for the council chambers. "They're not your enemies. They're scared families protecting themselves from Volkov's assault. If they demand your removal, it's not because you're actually weakness…it's because Volkov has made them believe you are."
"And if I can't convince them otherwise?"
"Then we accept their judgment and figure out how to survive separately." Lorenzo's voice carried the weight of loss he was preparing for. "But Seraphina…regardless of what they decide tonight…know that you mattered. That the time we had changed me in ways that don't disappear just because you do."
They walked to the car that would take them to council meeting where Seraphina's fate, and potentially Lorenzo's entire organizational future, would be decided by families caught between loyalty and survival.
As they drove through Mediterranean evening that should have been beautiful, Seraphina's phone buzzed with final message from Volkov:
"The council meets tonight. They will demand your removal. Accept my offer now, before they have chance to exile you publicly. At least this way, you leave with dignity instead of being expelled like liability."
She deleted the message without responding, but felt its weight settling over her like prophecy. Volkov had orchestrated perfect storm. And tonight, in front of council of families he'd systematically terrified, Seraphina would discover whether she'd become strong enough to survive the demands:
The allied family demands Seraphina's removal.
