Chapter 53
Murphy got a visit from the officer investigating Long’s death. He did his best to console her when she burst into tears upon hearing the news. He couldn’t say anything about the case, except that Long had a bruise on his head.
The car was impounded, he said, but she could have the contents of a box found in the trunk. She asked him why her. He told her that her name was written on a piece of paper inside the box and her phone number was in Long’s phone found in his pants pocket. The contents of the box were of no value to the investigation.
“I’m sorry for your loss, Ms. Murphy,” the officer said.
“Thank you.”
Murphy put the box on her kitchen table and poured herself a cup of coffee. She was certain that Long was murdered.
Too bad that when you die, your final thoughts can’t be stored in a device like an airplane’s black box. The police would know your killer.
