Chapter 270 Unwilling to Give Up
Chapter 270 Unwilling to Give Up
Emily clutched her phone, her anger and hatred reaching their peak.
Since everyone was being so heartless to her, she was even more determined not to give up!
Even if she went to hell, she'd drag Cynthia down with her!
"Help me sit up," Emily said to the nurse.
The nurse sighed and helped her up. Though she was a nurse, she still hoped to be treated with respect.
But Emily treated her like a servant!
"Ms. Lockhart?"
Another nurse knocked and entered, "The bank card you gave us earlier shows it's been frozen. You need to settle your surgery and hospital fees now."
Was the card frozen?
So quickly!
Emily gripped the bedsheet, feeling extremely unwilling. That was the Lockhart family's card - she didn't expect her parents to be so ruthless.
"Bring me my bag."
Emily ordered the nurse, and seeing her move slowly, impatiently said, "Hurry up!"
The nurse held back her frustration, but finally couldn't take it anymore. "I'm sorry, I'm a nurse, not your maid. Please show me some respect."
Emily's face darkened. Now, even a nurse dared to talk to her like this!
"This is my attitude, so what? You're just a nurse - you should feel lucky to serve me!"
The nurse got angry, too. "Who do you think you are? People should respect each other! You're so awful, no wonder you fell and became disabled."
Emily was furious and grabbed the vase from the bedside table, hurling it viciously.
"Say that again, I dare you!"
The vase flew past the nurse's ear and crashed hard against the wall with a loud bang.
If the nurse hadn't dodged in time, it would have hit her head!
"What a psycho!" the nurse cursed. "No wonder nobody comes to see you! No wonder nobody takes care of you!"
With that, the nurse left without looking back.
Emily's temper still hadn't vented. She shouted after the departing nurse, "Stop right there! What kind of attitude is that? I'm going to report you!"
But now, all she could do was shout and lose her temper from the bed.
The nurse who had come to collect payment witnessed this scene and felt helpless. She didn't want to deal with Emily at all. From the moment Emily was brought to the hospital, she had recognized her - wasn't Emily the adopted daughter of the Lockhart family everyone was talking about in the news?
Emily was exactly as described in the news - mean and bad-tempered.
Though she really didn't want to deal with Emily, the fees had to be settled. Reluctantly, the nurse went to the cabinet and brought Emily's bag over.
"Use this bank card."
The nurse took the card and swiped it through the machine, then shook her head. "I'm sorry, this card has no credit limit left and can't be charged."
Emily rummaged through her bag several times and pulled out one last bank card.
That was her own card - surely there couldn't be a problem with this one too!
The young nurse swiped the card and shook her head helplessly. "I'm sorry, this card shows outstanding debt and can't be used either."
Outstanding debt?
Emily remembered - she had just ordered a limited edition bag yesterday using this card.
But Ethan had the finance department pay off her bills on time every month, so Emily had never worried about money.
Now, not only couldn't she pay her medical bills, but her card was even in debt...
How could this happen...
Just yesterday, she could casually buy bags worth hundreds of thousands of dollars.
Now...
Emily's face went pale, but for the sake of her pride, she couldn't show it. After taking deep breaths to calm herself, she asked, "How much do I owe?"
"Currently, you need to pay three hundred and fifty thousand dollars, plus another hundred thousand for follow-up hospitalization and therapy - a total of four hundred and fifty thousand dollars."
In the past, four hundred and fifty thousand dollars would have been nothing to Emily.
But now...
She didn't have a penny of her own, since she'd always relied on the Lockhart family.
"There might be something wrong with my cards. Contact my family and have them bring money."
Emily gave the nurse Beatrice's phone number and added, "Tell them clearly about my situation - the more pitiful the better. Have them come quickly."
Maybe if Beatrice saw her current state, she'd soften. Seeing her lying weak in bed, maybe she'd forgive her!
Beatrice had always been soft-hearted.
Besides, calling from the nurse's phone, Beatrice would definitely answer!
The nurse sighed. Though unwilling, she was afraid that if Emily really couldn't pay, she'd be held responsible too.
She had no choice but to dial the number.
"Hello, is this Mrs. Lockhart?"
"Who's this?"
"I'm a nurse at Haven Healthcare Hospital. Ms. Emily Lockhart is currently receiving treatment here. She says you're her family. Please come to the hospital as soon as possible to pay the medical fees."
Hearing the nurse say this, Emily's face immediately darkened.
Hadn't she told the nurse to make her sound more pitiful? How would Beatrice soften with the nurse talking like this!
Emily used her eyes to remind the nurse to say what she wanted!
"Mrs. Lockhart, Ms. Lockhart is in very bad condition. Her lumbar vertebrae are fractured - she won't be able to stand for the rest of her life. No one's taking care of her now. You'd better come."
"She's not Ms. Lockhart."
She was Wendy's daughter, so naturally, she couldn't keep the Lockhart name.
Beatrice continued, "She has nothing to do with me now. Please don't call again."
Just as Beatrice was about to hang up, pitiful crying came from the other end.
"Mom!" Emily snatched the phone. "I can't feel my legs! I'll never be able to stand again - you can't abandon me!"
Emily thought she'd get Beatrice's sympathy, but she didn't know that the more miserable she was, the more Beatrice hated her.
"If Cynthia hadn't been smart enough to discover your scheme in time, she'd be the one lying in that bed now!"
Beatrice's voice was full of anger. "Everything you're going through almost happened to Cynthia!"
The more Beatrice thought about it, the more terrified she felt!
Emily's hand holding the phone froze by her ear. "Mom, but I'm your daughter too."
"From the moment you publicly slandered Randolph and me, you stopped being our daughter!"
"Didn't you think we treated you badly? Didn't you think we gave all our love to Cynthia? Well, now you'll experience what being truly treated badly feels like!"
"Mom!"
Emily wanted to say more, but only a busy tone remained on the line.
When she called back, the number had been blocked.
The nurse standing nearby quickly took back her phone, afraid this crazy woman would have another episode and smash it.
The young nurse spoke up, "Miss, how would you like to settle the fees?"
