Chapter - 70: Suspicions
(Faedra's POV).
A series of emotions—confusion, fear, and panic—all arose while I pondered hard over all that had happened today.
My palms remained sweaty, and here I had been all alone, tossing from side to side in bed, unable to find a reason to sleep. Fear filled my eyes, but they still remained wide apart, glancing all around the surrounding area.
I never should have agreed to stay in the room all alone. I tried closing my eyes, but the image haunted me once again: the look in its eyes, how it had leaped towards me, the pure murderous intent it had, the loud and menacing growl and canines flashed at me, merely inches away from my face.
I looked toward my arm, where I had been clawed, and traced my fingers over the spot. Goosebumps rose on my skin while I shuddered in fear. I believed I had thought it through, but it seemed to have taken a twisted turn. I was hopeless and helpless. Cornered to a spot, how I wish things could be handled better between whoever wanted me dead and myself, I could not keep living in fear.
My throat ran dry while I listened to these words, but who was I to make such orders? Castor had saved my life, and he had deserved every good thing I could possibly have to offer. Most of it had been my fault, and I regret it instantly.
My mind drifted back toward the purple flame that I had seen; they didn't seem to come from Castor, and it wasn't a figment of my imagination; it felt so real; it didn't come from me, as well. Or did it?
I shook off the thoughts from my head; my wolf was already weak as it was; I had little to no time left for making silly mistakes, as well as now I had horrid imaginations that would haunt me in the future; and, one way or another, I didn't possess power or magic; the flames had nothing to do with me.
I sighed. I rolled in bed again before switching on the lamp by the bedside. A call buzzed on my phone. At the other end of the room, I glanced ahead, and a frown settled on my face. I hardly got calls from anyone. I rose to my feet, feeling a little worn out.
I swallowed hard, reaching for the phone, but to my surprise, the caller was Shade. I picked up the phone and glanced at it still. Filled with confusion.
Shade had never called me, not for once; he never had a reason to, and nothing had changed; there seemed to be way too much or important.
Wasn't he meant to be wasting more time with Sheila? Reluctantly, I picked it up and glued the phone up to my ears.
“Hi?” He asked on the phone while I swallowed hard. I was pissed, but suddenly my heart skipped beats on cue. I missed him so badly, and maybe I wasn't ready to admit that part of it but now I knew what it was that I truly felt.
“I need to speak with Castor, or maybe Zed.” He responded coldly to the phone, drawing me back. It hurt my feelings a bit. I wasn't sure what I needed to do or think about, but certainly he had not called to speak with me or ask about my health. I knew that now.
“They are both out, tending to some business; I'm not so sure; why don't you try calling them?” I asked, trying hard to hide the bitterness and pain in my voice.
“If their numbers went through, would I bother calling you, Faedra?” He asked, sounding just as sarcastic as I remembered him to be.
“Both their numbers had been switched off. I was not so sure to think about it; it bothered me a whole lot, yet I felt terribly uneasy. I have information to pass across to them,” he responded, and I found it just as bad. What exactly was it all about? Why would their number not go through?
“I don't know. I'll say you called when it comes down to the end, okay?” I asked and swallowed hard, nodding slowly.
“Fine, but I caught the culprit. Well, kind of. The truth is a bit harsh, but he's dead. He attacked me. We got into a little heated fight at the moment. I was rendered with no other choice. I reached for him. I had stabbed him. I needed to explain it all to Zed. I need help from his men to sort out the whole issue at hand.” I was stunned for a bit, and hearing his words startled me a bit.
“I'm sorry, but did I just hear you right?” I asked on the phone, trying to wrap my head around his words.
"Yes, Faedra, you heard me right; I got into a fight with a warrior who had attacked me and is now dead.” He explained once more, but those had not sounded sane enough.
“We caught an attacker here as well. A wolf was sent to attack me here as well; luckily enough for us, Castor had been there to save me. They both went out just now to tend to the issue, but I think there is a reason they weren't picking up calls.”
“It's really hard to believe; the warrior was here for you as well. Does it mean they were both being controlled? And if that is so, then... never mind.” Shade responded abruptly before ending the call, leaving my intrusive thoughts while I pondered the situation at hand. Two people had been after my life.
I suddenly felt even more unsafe before standing on my feet, which bothered me as well, hearing what Shade had said about Zed and Castor not picking up calls. I stood to my feet and headed toward the door to find out what it was that was actually happening.
