Chapter 40 40

Chapter 40 40

For a split second, nobody was able to process what had happened. And that was the moment another reality slammed into both brothers. They hadn't just been tracked here but they had been surrounded as well, seemingly from every side.

Domenico wondered how the hell anybody could have tracked them here, how they could have known that they both were on their way here and also how they had been able to quickly assemble their attack within minutes of them arriving here. It just made no sense at all.

He pressed the earpiece with his shoulder, listening in for any response from his men but he heard nothing.

He furiously spoke into it again. "I repeat, we have a code red here. We are user fire!"

His teeth were clenched and his pulse was pounding as he rolled over to the other side, listening in again.

The comm system cracked with static but soon went silent again. And that's when it dawned on him that they were screwed. Their comms had been compromised.

His men soon realised that standing and shooting, while looking for the shooter made no sense, because whoever this was, they were very skilled and were shooting from far away, meaning that spotting them would be impossible unless they were willing to sacrifice a good number of men, which they couldn't afford.

Blaze’s crew took cover by the warehouse wall too, still searching for a target since they were in a more covered position. Anna, who was still tied up, couldn't help but scream as she heard the gunshots that exploded outside.

Outside, it didn't take long before the yard exploded into panic. But just when they thought all hope was lost, Domenico’s men arrived at the scene.

Some of his messages had slipped through the comms system because his tech team had been able to regain control of it for a short period of time before losing it again. But luckily, and coincidentally, they'd heard Dom’s cries about the code red, so more men weren't sent in immediately.

The four jeeps were soon facing every direction. That's when Dom’s voice thundered, calm but utterly fierce.

"Eyes up! I need you to find the shooter! Move!" Blaze cursed under his breath, breathing hard.

This wasn't the plan. Nobody else was supposed to be here. He glared at Dom from behind the cover, breathing heavily.

"I won't be surprised if this is all your doing. Nobody should know we are here if not because of you. You brought someone, didn't you?"

Dom barked back, furiously. "If I brought someone you'd be already dead."

"Nobody would have known I'm here if you didn't fucking track me and tell the whole world about it. You told Locke, who in turn told the men he was with. Maybe one or some of the guards are the traitors we are dealing with. Don't you think they might have told these people who are firing at us now? Can't you use your fixking head for once-"

Another bullet struck the metal siding, causing the duo to duck quickly again. The sharp echo cut through the yard again before silence took its place but it was a very tense, deafening silence.

Blaze’s heart was beating like a war drum as he lay there, wondering if Dom’s hadn't yet identified the location of the sniper that was firing at them.

He hated the fact that the gun in his hands was utterly useless considering the circumstances.

This situation had just flipped fast and gotten just wrong. He peeked around the crate and saw nothing but shadows and sun glare. Who the hell was shooting? Thoughts like a rival gang, police or a third player went through his mind but none of that mattered. What mattered was that the enemy was dangerous and had to be exterminated as soon as possible.

"Sniper spotted!" One of the men on the jeeps yelled before he began firing with the machine gun.

Dom, seeing the opportunity, looked around for a better place to hide. He soon found one of his cars. They were all his and bulletproof, so if he could get behind one of them, that would save him a lot of trouble.

As the man continued firing into the distance, he explained everything to Blaze who stood up with him and took off in the direction of the car. They were able to get there in a few seconds and crouch, breathing heavily. "Do you see anything?"

"No." Blaze hissed. "But someone wants us dead."

"No shit." Another round screamed overhead.

The enemy had shot again but luckily they had totally missed.

Dom’s fingers tightened around his gun. Blaze exhaled, fury mixing with adrenaline as he raised his head and looked through the glass. He spotted the men still shooting and felt a wave of anger run through him.

"I wish I could get my hands on that thing. I'll blow the brains off the bastard that's shooting."

Dom didn't look at him, eyes fixed forward. "But you can't. Allow them to deal with the shooter. Once the primary threat has been exterminated, we deal with the rest. You better get fucking down."

Blaze couldn't hide his anger this time. He felt like a coward crouched there under enemy fire, but he knew that losing his life was even worse. "You're still a cocky bastard."

"And you're still fucking reckless. Stupidly reckless to be precise."

The silence fell for a beat as the loud, tense and violent atmosphere kept pumping up.

War had arrived and they both knew getting out of here was going to take a while. Just then, one of his men yelled through the comms.

"The sniper is down! I repeat, the...!"

That was the only cue they needed to know that it was time to get out and deal with the rest. They'd won yet again, and this time they needed to find out who this enemy was or their safety would never be assured, ever again.
