Her Awakening

Kayden’s POV

The shadows came at us from every direction. My eyes locked on Heather as chaos engulfed the battlefield. Stella was clearly exhausted, though she’d never admit it—not even to herself. Heather wasn’t far behind, her strength fading fast. Damon and I exchanged a look, nodding in silent agreement. In an instant, we shifted into our wolf forms, tearing through the wraith-like figures that dared to fight us. But no matter how many we tore apart, they just kept coming. The numbers weren’t dwindling—they were multiplying.

I cast dark flames, channeling every ounce of magic I had to obliterate them, but it was pointless. More shadows poured through the walls, like the walls themselves were portals to another dimension. The vortex was endless.

“What the hell do we do? These pests won’t die!” Damon’s voice cut through my mind via the link, his frustration mirroring my own.

“We need to find the source. Something’s keeping that vortex open,” I shot back. Damon nodded again, and we kept fighting, scanning for any sign of the origin while trying to protect Stella and Heather.

I spotted Stella struggling to hold up a barrier around Heather, her energy flickering dangerously. The shadows were closing in on them, their claws scraping against the shimmering shield. My chest tightened. I had to get to them before Stella’s barrier failed. But even as I fought, something primal surged inside me—a feral enjoyment in the battle, mixed with a desperate need to end this and take Heather home, safe.

“Die!” I snarled internally, tearing through another shadow. Damon’s Lycan let out a furious howl beside me, and together we pushed forward, determined to find the source. Finally, I spotted it—the necromancer. A twisted figure cloaked in shadows, its presence felt like a black hole, pulling all light and hope into its void.

Shifting back into my human form, I knew close combat wasn’t an option as a wolf. This fight needed the precision of Xael’s magic, not brute force. Damon followed my lead, and we hurled spell after spell at the necromancer, but it deflected our attacks like they were nothing more than paper arrows.

Then I heard it—a scream that froze the blood in my veins.

“Heather!”

Her cry of pain ripped through the chaos. I turned, just in time to see a shadow wrapping itself around her, choking her, pinning her to the ground. Stella was unconscious, her barrier shattered. My body moved on instinct, but before I could reach Heather, the necromancer sent a fresh swarm of shadows at me, blocking my path.

“No… no, I can’t lose her!” My voice broke in a whisper, barely audible over Damon’s roar of frustration.

“Stella!” Damon’s panicked voice reached me through the haze.

Before I could shift again, the air around us crackled with raw, terrifying energy. A deafening clap of thunder shook the room as a storm of dark lightning struck down, obliterating the shadows and taking the necromancer with it. I froze.

Standing at the center of the destruction was Heather.

Her chest rose and fell with ragged breaths, her eyes glowing a piercing, unnatural purple. Magic swirled around her like a raging hurricane, tendrils of electricity sparking in the air. The power radiating from her was overwhelming. My heart clenched—relief, awe, and fear all warring within me.

Then, as quickly as it came, the storm faded. Heather’s knees buckled, her body swaying dangerously. I was there in an instant, catching her in my arms before she hit the ground. Her magic was spent, her eyes fluttering closed as her head rested against my chest.

A key—glowing faintly—floated into the air between us. It pulsed with an eerie light before hovering in front of me. Without hesitation, I reached out and took it, the cool metal humming with power in my grip.

“We have to go. Now!” Damon yelled, carrying Stella’s unconscious form.

With Heather in my arms, I sprinted after him, weaving through the ruined Dungeon, getting close as we exist the opera house. We burst out into the open, gasping for breath. The cool air hit us like a slap, but there was no time to pause. Tourists stared at us in shock, their eyes darting between the women in our arms and… well, our very naked selves.

“Hey! You two!” A security guard approached, his hand reaching for his radio. “Put the women down! You’re not abducting anyone in broad daylight! And for the love of God, put some clothes on!”

“Oh, God,” I muttered. We forgot we shifted.

“I think they’re crazy—running around naked, carrying women like cavemen,” one tourist whispered loudly.

Another smirked, blatantly ogling us. “I wouldn’t mind being abducted by those two hunks. Look at their bodies…”

Damon growled under his breath, his patience evaporating. “Open the damn portal, Kayden.”

“I’m trying!” I snapped, my magic flaring as I focused on creating the vortex. The stares—some amused, some alarmed—only made it harder to concentrate. Damon muttered something about wiping their memories, his powers sparking to life as he erased any trace of what they’d just seen. Finally, the vortex opened, and we dove through, landing hard in the safety of our hotel suite.

We didn’t stop moving until Heather was in bed, her breathing steady, her body finally at rest. Damon placed Stella down gently on the couch, his expression grim.

After a quick shower and some clean clothes, I locked the key away in the vortex locker—a magical safe only I could open. Its power was too dangerous to leave unguarded.

Just as I was catching my breath, my phone buzzed. Harris’s voice came through, frantic and strained.

“Alpha! Our base… it’s surrounded! These weird creatures—dark, twisted things—”

A bloodcurdling scream erupted through the line, followed by a deafening roar.

“Harris?! HARRIS!” I shouted, but the line went dead.

My fists clenched, fury and dread pooling in my chest. This wasn’t over. Not even close.
