Chapter 61
Chapter 61
"Mr. Brown, you're too kind. This is all part of my job. I proposed, so naturally I should be responsible for it."
"Stanley just cares too much about his sister."
William rubbed his temples, his tone carrying a hint of barely noticeable complexity.
"He's almost unconditionally indulgent with Amelia, so I'm sorry you had to go through that."
Isabella naturally understood what William meant.
She had also heard from Saskia that Amelia had once gone missing and was only found later, so naturally, the Martinez family would spoil her even more.
It's just that she was merely a small secretary who got dragged into this mess, which was really unfair.
Isabella sighed inwardly and turned to look out the window.
Seeing Amelia made her realize how lucky she was to have someone backing you up. For her, it seemed that apart from William, no one would stand up for her.
A complex emotion suddenly arose in Isabella's heart.
She couldn't quite figure out whether meeting William was a good thing or a bad thing.
Did God arrange for her to meet William so that William could solve the problems she encountered?
Isabella couldn't figure it out. Later, when William asked where she wanted to go, Isabella just wanted to go home.
Although she had handled being put on the spot by Stanley in public pretty well, she still felt uncomfortable inside.
The only thing she wanted to do now was lie in bed and get a good sleep.
William noticed she seemed distracted and didn't say much, personally driving her home.
When they arrived, Isabella insisted on watching William drive away before turning to head upstairs.
Suddenly, the sound of a car engine starting came from behind her.
Isabella froze for a moment, then whipped around to see a white sports car racing toward her.
Isabella's eyes widened, her heart instantly leaping to her throat, fear flashing in her eyes.
In that moment, her whole body went rigid, unable to even cry out for help.
Just when Isabella thought she was about to be hit, the white sports car stopped right at her feet.
Isabella instantly felt relieved, but her legs were still weak, and she almost fell.
The next second, the car window rolled down, revealing a pretty but arrogant face.
It was actually Amelia.
Isabella's heart jumped, and she immediately felt a headache coming on.
Why was Amelia so hard to shake off? She had even tracked her down to her doorstep.
As Isabella felt helpless, Amelia pushed open the car door and got out. She wore designer clothes, had perfect makeup, and looked at Isabella with undisguised hostility and superiority.
"Ms. Taylor, can we talk?"
"What does Ms. Martinez want to talk about?"
Isabella quickly composed herself, smiled at her, and tried to maintain politeness.
"About William, of course!"
Amelia lifted her chin and snorted coldly, then looked Isabella up and down with contempt in her eyes.
"Isabella, I know you haven't been by William's side for long, but William values you very much. To him, you're special."
Isabella kept her head down and said nothing.
Perhaps right now she was indeed special to William, but she didn't dare guarantee the future would be the same as now.
William was the CEO of the Brown Group. How could his heart possibly stay with a small employee?
It was precisely because she knew her place that she wouldn't have any unrealistic hopes about William.
Amelia thought Isabella was listening carefully to her words, and her expression became even more arrogant.
"I also know you're quite capable, but you should be clear that you and William aren't from the same world."
Hearing this, Isabella's hands hanging at her sides clenched slightly, and a bit of bitterness welled up in her eyes.
What Amelia said wasn't actually wrong - she and William really weren't from the same world.
Isabella pulled at the corners of her mouth, her voice calm, trying to make herself sound indifferent.
"Ms. Martinez, you've misunderstood. I'm just Mr. Brown's secretary. Between us, it's only work."
"Secretary?"
Amelia couldn't help but laugh coldly.
"Who knows what you're really scheming? William never keeps useless people around, and especially not pretty women with impure intentions."
At this, Amelia took a step forward, deliberately lowering her voice with a threatening tone.
"Let me tell you, Isabella, William is mine, has been since we were kids! My brother said whoever tries to take what's mine, he'll make sure they can't stay in this city! Do you really think you can compete with me?"
Mentioning Stanley, Isabella wasn't surprised.
Stanley's attitude toward her this afternoon had already made everything clear.
Stanley loved his sister Amelia dearly. As long as Amelia asked, Stanley would definitely help her get William.
But what did any of this have to do with her?
She was just an ordinary person who only wanted to live an ordinary life. Why did they have to make things difficult for her?
Seeing Isabella's silence, Amelia snorted again, her expression turning smug.
"I got lost when I was little and suffered a lot. My brother and my parents all spoil me. Whatever I want, they'll give me. William is the boyfriend I've chosen, and no one can touch him!"
Isabella slowly raised her head and looked at this spoiled Amelia in front of her, feeling completely unmoved inside.
She could tell that Amelia truly liked William, and Amelia truly lacked a sense of security.
The experience of being lost as a child made Amelia extremely possessive of things she cared about, and Stanley was her strongest support.
As long as Amelia was unhappy, Stanley would act without hesitation. Today's difficulties, Stanley gave her, were just the beginning.
If she continued to stay by William's side and continue blocking Amelia's path, Stanley had plenty of ways to make her life difficult.
Even William and Stanley's business cooperation would be affected.
Isabella closed her eyes, and when she opened them again, her eyes had regained their calm.
She wasn't afraid of trouble, but she was very clear that some things simply didn't belong to her. No matter how much she liked them or how unwilling she was, she couldn't compete with an Amelia who had been cherished since childhood and had the entire Martinez family backing her up.
More importantly, she didn't want to affect William's cooperation because of herself, and didn't want to cause William trouble.
Seeing her remain silent, Amelia thought she was scared, and her tone became even more smug.
"Isabella, I won't make things too hard for you. As long as you resign on your own, leave William, and stay far away from him from now on, I can guarantee nothing will happen to you, and you'll even get a nice compensation package!"
Isabella had always cared a lot about money. She thought she'd be happy to hear this, but actually she wasn't.
She just slowly spoke, her voice soft but clear.
"I don't need compensation."
Amelia was stunned, staring at her with suspicious eyes, clearly not quite believing it.
Isabella obviously wanted to use William to climb up the ladder - how could she not want compensation?
Before she could think more, Isabella took a deep breath, as if gathering her courage.
"I won't leave Mr. Brown, because that's my job. I can't abandon a job I worked so hard to get just because of your selfish desires."
