Chapter 11 REBELION.

Chapter 11 REBELION.
Isabel’s POV.

The air in club was thick with cologne, sweat, and something sweet—a cocktail I couldn’t name. It was the smell of late-night freedom.

My cousin, Lena, had her arm laced through mine, pulling me deeper into the pulsing darkness. She was practically vibrating with energy, her year abroad having apparently turned her personality into  rebellion.

“Are you breathing, Izzy?” she yelled, her voice a warm shout directly into my ear.

I could only manage a wide-eyed nod. Breathing was too much effort. My chest felt constricted, not from Mother’s restrictive orders this time, but from the raw, overwhelming sensory input. The bass didn't just rattle the speakers; it burrowed deep into my ribs, a thrilling, alien presence. The lights were merciless—blue, pink, red painting the packed crowd into  chaotic portraits of human movement.

I was here, in the forbidden zone, and I felt like a spy in a foreign country, wearing a disguise I didn’t know how to carry. Every instinct, every rule drilled into me since childhood—Decorum. Posture. Silence. was screaming at me to retreat.

“I feel like everyone knows I’m here for the first time,” I admitted, my voice trembling.

Lena laughed, a rich, open sound I envied. “Nonsense! That’s rule one of the club: everyone is too busy thinking about themselves to notice you. Unless you’re me, of course.” She winked, completely at ease in her shimmering dress. She was the example of the woman the Sterling family expected me to be—confident , vibrant, and accountable to no one.

We finally secured a small patch of  space by a  speaker stack. I leaned against it, my borrowed heels already pinching, my anxiety making my muscles tense. I kept fiddling with the sheer fabric of my top, convinced it was  too revealing and too small.

I was Isabel Sterling, Adrian’s wife, the passed bride. A woman whose life was a series of measured exchanges and careful alliances. Yet, here I was, risking a scandal that could jeopardize my father’s fragile business and bring my mother’s  fury down on my head. If Adrian had known, would he have been okay with this?. If Damien had known…

The thought of Damien, witnessing this fragile act of rebellion made the pit of my stomach hollow out. His judgment would be devastating, far worse than how Adrian was going to handle this, perhaps.

“Don’t think about him,” I muttered to myself.

“Who?” Lena asked, already swaying her hips to the beat.

“Nothing. Just… I don’t know how to do this.”

“You breathe, Izzy. You move. You stop thinking about how many miles an hour you’d be going if you ran home right now.” Lena grabbed my hands, pulling me a foot away from the speaker. “It’s physical release. You’ve been wound tight since you were born. Let go.”

A new wave of music washed over us, a heavy, hypnotic deep house track with a female vocal loop. It was warmer than the earlier music. slower, better. Lena closed her eyes and tilted her head back, moving with a beautiful, unforced steps.

I watched her for a moment, and something clicked. This wasn't a performance for my family, for Adrian, or for the watchful ghosts of the Sterling legacy. This was for me. This was a place where my silence and my perfect manners were meaningless.

I started small. A careful weight shift from one foot to the other. I focused entirely on the vibrating floor and the rhythm in my chest. In. Out. I had to remind myself to inhale.

My hair, usually pinned up in a  elegant knot, was down tonight, falling in the loose waves Lena had insisted on. As I moved my head slightly, the strands brushed my shoulders, a small, sensory reminder that I was free.

The tension in my arms was the hardest to shake. They felt heavy, weighed down by years of holding back, of crossing them neatly in my lap at formal dinners. Lena opened her eyes and gave me a genuine, encouraging smile. Not the pitying, smile Adrian sometimes gave me.

I let my hands drift up, hesitant at first, like nervous birds testing the air.

And then, something snapped.

The effort I took in going out, the exhilarating terror of knowing I was exactly where I shouldn't be, combined with the relentless, enveloping beat of the bass. I surrendered.

I closed my eyes. The lights vanished, and the music became everything.

My hips started to move with less thought, my feet found the rhythm, and my arms lifted, not in elegance, but in pure, unpracticed release. I was a terrible dancer, I knew it, but for the first time, I didn't care. I felt the sweat prickle my skin, the energy of the crowd pressing in, and it didn't feel suffocating—it felt alive.

A laugh bubbled up, light and airy, escaping before my anxiety could capture it. I spun, once, twice, fast enough for my hair to fan out and the world to briefly dissolve into a streak of colors. It was brief, breathless, pure, and wholly mine. It was a secret I had just discovered within myself.

When I stopped, slightly dizzy, I was smiling so hard my cheeks ached. I felt light, cleansed, and strangely powerful. I had defied everything I was supposed to be, and the world hadn't ended.

I lifted a hand to brush the damp hair from my forehead, my gaze sweeping across the dark club, still high on the exhilaration.

And then I saw him.

The VIP section was tucked away high above the dance floor, shrouded in shadow and marked by a velvet rope and a pair of looming security guards. It was a secluded haven of stillness in the chaotic room.

He was standing there, just inside the perimeter.

Damien Sterling.

He was alone, leaning against the railing, his arms crossed over his chest. He wasn’t talking, wasn’t drinking, wasn’t even shifting his weight. He was simply observing.

And he was looking directly at me.

The silence that had previously been a mental filter became reality. The blood in my veins turned to ice. My smile shattered, leaving my face numb. The terror of being caught in my  most rebellious moment paralyzed me instantly.

His eyes—those crystalline, dark green eyes—were steady. There was no surprise, no anger. He hadn't just noticed me; he had been watching. Watching the entire, messy, frantic display of my forbidden joy.

His stare felt like a chain dropped into my soul, pulling me down from the high of my freedom and back into the suffocating reality of his ownership. Adrian may have his ring on my finger, but in that moment, under Damien's  gaze, he had a secret of mine and I was exposed. The fire of the dance floor died instantly, replaced by dread that threaten to swallow me whole.
