Chapter 59 The Weight of Resurrection

Chapter 59 The Weight of Resurrection
Three days later, Mara still felt wrong.
Not physically. Physically she was fine. Healed. Healthy. Mortal.
But inside, something had changed. Broken. Shifted.
She stood on the palace balcony watching the sunrise. Trying to feel normal. Trying to feel human. Trying to feel anything besides the numbness that had settled into her bones.
"You have not slept," Zevran said from the doorway.
"I cannot. Every time I close my eyes, I am back there. Dying. Darkness. Nothing. And then waking up. The confusion. The pain. The fear that I would die again before I could say goodbye."
"But you did not die. You are here. You are safe."
"Am I? Or am I just waiting for the next crisis? The next threat? The next time I have to choose between dying and letting others die?"
"Stop. You are spiraling."
"I am being realistic. My life is a series of impossible choices. And one day, I am going to make the wrong one. And it will destroy everything."
Zevran walked to her. Stood beside her. Did not touch. Just existed in the same space. "Do you regret it? Coming back?"
"I do not know. Part of me is grateful. I get more time with you. With Isla. With everyone I love. But another part wonders if it was selfish. If staying dead would have been better. Easier. For everyone."
"Easier for who? Not for me. I was ready to follow you into death. Give up everything. If the goddess had not intervened, I would have."
"Do not say that."
"Why not? It is true. You are my mate. My bond. My everything. Without you, I am just a wolf waiting to die. With you, I have a reason to live. To fight. To hope."
"That is too much pressure. I cannot be your only reason."
"Then what should my reason be?"
"Yourself. Your choices. Your purpose. I can be part of that. But not all of it. You need to exist beyond me. Beyond us."
"I have been alive for over two hundred years. I have existed beyond many things. None of them mattered like you matter."
Mara finally looked at him. Really looked. Saw the exhaustion in his eyes. The grief he was still carrying. The fear of losing her again.
"I am sorry. For dying. For coming back. For being so complicated that just existing near me is dangerous."
"Stop apologizing for surviving. You did nothing wrong. You were killed by forces beyond your control. You came back because something in the universe decided you were not finished. And you are still here because the goddess herself said you deserve to live. Stop feeling guilty about that."
"I do not know how. Guilt is all I know. I spent my whole life feeling guilty for existing. For being half human. For not being strong enough. For surviving when others died. How do I stop?"
"You let me help you. You let others help you. You stop carrying everything alone."
"I do not know how to do that either."
"Then learn. Starting now. Starting with me." Zevran took her hand. Finally touched her. "Talk to me. Really talk. Tell me what happened when you died. Where did you go? What did you see? What brought you back?"
Mara was quiet for a long time. "I do not remember much. Just darkness. Silence. And then a voice. Calling my name. Over and over. 'Mara. Mara. Come back. Not done yet. Come back.' I tried to ignore it. Tried to stay in the dark. It was peaceful there. No pain. No responsibility. No fear. But the voice would not stop. Would not let me rest. And finally, I followed it. And woke up in my body. In pain. In confusion. But alive."
"Whose voice was it?"
"I do not know. It sounded like you. But also like Isla. And my mother. And everyone I ever loved all speaking at once. Maybe it was the universe. Maybe it was the goddess. Maybe it was just my own stubborn refusal to die. I do not know."
"Does it matter?"
"I think it does. Because if I was meant to come back, then I need to know why. What am I supposed to do now? What is my purpose?"
"Maybe your purpose is just to live. To exist. To be happy. Not everything has to be some grand destiny."
"That feels too simple. Too easy. I died and came back more powerful than before. That has to mean something."
"Or it means you got lucky. And now you get a second chance to build the life you always wanted. The quiet one. The peaceful one. The one where you are not constantly fighting impossible odds."
"I do not know if I can do quiet. Peaceful. Normal. That is not who I am."
"Then be loud. Be chaotic. Be whatever you want. Just be alive to do it."
Mara turned to face him fully. "Do you really want me? After everything? After knowing I died and came back? After seeing what I am capable of? The power I carry even though I tried to release it?"
"Yes. All of it. Every broken piece. Every scar. Every burden. I want all of you. Forever."
"Even knowing I might die again? That being near me is dangerous?"
"Especially then. I would rather have one day with you in danger than a lifetime of safety without you."
"You are insane."
"So are you. We match."
He pulled her close. Kissed her. It was different than before. Desperate. Urgent. Like he was trying to prove she was real. That she was not going to disappear.
Mara kissed back. Let herself feel. Let herself want. Let herself hope that maybe, just maybe, they could have something normal. Something good.
They pulled apart. Both breathing hard. Both wanting more. But knowing they needed to talk first. To process. To heal.
"We should take things slow," Mara said. "I feel like a different person. Like I need to learn who I am all over again. And I cannot do that while drowning in emotion."
"How slow?"
"I do not know. However long it takes for me to feel like myself again. To feel like I deserve this. Deserve you. Deserve happiness."
"You already deserve it. But I will wait. As long as you need. I have already waited twenty years while trapped in the void. I can wait a little longer while you heal."
"Thank you. For understanding. For not pushing. For loving me even when I am a mess."
"You are my favorite mess."
They stood together. Watching the sun rise fully. Starting a new day. A new chapter. A new life.
But their peace was interrupted by shouting from below. Guards running. Panic spreading.
"Not again," Mara muttered. "What now?"
They ran to the commotion. Found guards surrounding a stranger. A man. Tall. Scarred. With eyes that glowed red.
"He appeared out of nowhere!" a guard reported. "Just materialized in the throne room! Asking for the Moon Wolf by name!"
"Who are you?" Mara demanded.
The man smiled. "I am Kael. Elara's son. And I am here to deliver her message. She says hello. And she says the real war starts tomorrow. Better be ready."
"She has a son?"
"Technically, she has twelve. All grown. All powerful. All very eager to meet you." Kael's red eyes gleamed. "See you on the battlefield, Moon Wolf. Try not to die before the fun begins."
He vanished. Just disappeared like he was never there.
"Twelve?" Zevran looked at Mara. "She has twelve children?"
"Apparently. All warriors. All coming for us." Mara felt her power stir inside her. The dormant energy she thought she had released. It was waking up. Responding to the threat. "This is going to be bad."
"How bad?"
"Very bad. We need to call everyone. Every ally. Every fighter. Every pack. This is not just an attack. This is an invasion."
"Can we win?"
Mara looked at the horizon. At the darkness gathering there. At the storm that was coming. "I do not know. But we are going to try. Because that is what we do. We fight impossible odds. And sometimes, we win."
"And when we do not?"
"Then we go down swinging. Together. As we always have."
They clasped hands. United. Determined. Ready to face whatever came next.
Above them, storm clouds gathered. Thunder rolled. And somewhere in the distance, an army was marching.
The war was coming. And this time, there would be no easy victory. No divine intervention. No second chances.
This time, they would have to win on their own. Or lose everything trying.
Mara looked at Zevran. At the man who had stood beside her through everything. "No matter what happens, I need you to know something."
"What?"
“I love you. Not because of fate or bonds or destiny. I choose you. Every single day. I choose you.”
Zevran pulled her close. “I choose you too. Now and always.”
A guard burst onto the balcony. “Moon wolf! Three more appeared! Three more of Elara’s sons! They are in the city! Attacking civilians!”
“Where?” Mara was already running.
“The market district! They are destroying everything!”
