Chapter 45 Continuation

Chapter 45 Continuation
When morning came, scouts reported that Oblivion was less than a mile away. Moving steadily toward them.
"Everyone get in position!" Mara commanded. "This is it!"
Five thousand wolves formed lines. Archers in back. Melee fighters in front. Healers positioned safely behind.
Mara stood at the very front with Zevran on her right and Kieran on her left.
"Remember the plan," Kieran said. "We hit him with everything we have. Distract him. Keep him busy while I prepare the sealing ritual."
"How long do you need?"
"Ten minutes. Maybe more."
"We can give you ten minutes."
"I hope so. Because if I cannot seal him, we all die."
Oblivion appeared on the horizon. Walking slowly. Confidently. Like he had all the time in the world.
Because he did.
"Archers!" Mara called. "Fire!"
A thousand arrows flew through the air. They struck Oblivion from every angle.
He did not even slow down. The arrows passed through him like he was made of smoke.
"Physical attacks do not work!" Kieran shouted. "Use magic! Use power!"
Mara called on her silver light. Shot it at Oblivion like a spear.
The light struck him. For a moment, he flickered. Wavered.
Then he laughed. "Interesting. You have real power. This will be fun."
He raised his hand. Darkness shot from his fingers. Not shadow darkness. Void darkness. The absence of everything.
The darkness swept across the battlefield. Wolves screamed as it touched them. They did not die. They simply ceased to exist. Erased from reality.
"Scatter!" Mara screamed. "Do not let it touch you!"
Everyone ran. But the darkness kept spreading. Kept consuming.
"I need more time!" Kieran called. He was chanting. Drawing symbols in the air with glowing light. "Keep him distracted!"
"How?" Zevran demanded.
"I do not know! Figure it out!"
Mara transformed into her wolf form. Called on every ounce of power she had. Silver light exploded from her body.
She charged at Oblivion. Not to kill him. Just to keep his attention.
Her light collided with his darkness. The two forces fought. Clashed. Neither giving ground.
"You are strong," Oblivion said. He sounded impressed. "Stronger than the last Moon Wolf. This will be delicious."
He pushed harder. The darkness grew. Mara felt herself being consumed. Erased.
Then Zevran appeared beside her. His black wolf form glowed with its own power. Not moon light. But something else. Something primal.
"You are not alone!" he snarled.
His power joined Mara's. Together, they pushed back against the darkness.
Then Luna joined them. Then Riven. Then Queen Adira. Then dozens more.
All combining their power. All fighting together.
The darkness stopped advancing. Held in place by collective will.
"Impressive," Oblivion said. "But futile. You cannot hold me forever. Eventually, you will tire. And then I will consume you all."
He was right. Mara could feel her strength fading. The others too. They could not keep this up much longer.
"Kieran!" she called. "How much longer?"
"Two more minutes! Just two more minutes!"
"We do not have two minutes!"
"Then make time!"
Mara dug deeper. Pulled on power she did not know she had. Power from the bond with Zevran. Power from her connection to all the wolves fighting beside her.
She felt something change inside her. Shift. Evolve.
Her silver light turned gold. Pure gold. Brighter than the sun.
"What is happening?" Zevran asked.
"I do not know! But it feels right!"
The golden light pushed against Oblivion's darkness. Actually pushed it back.
For the first time, Oblivion looked surprised. "Impossible. No one has golden light. Not since the first wolves walked the earth."
"Guess I am special," Mara growled.
"Too special. You are too dangerous to let live." Oblivion's face twisted with rage. "I will consume you first! Before you grow stronger!"
He released everything. All his power. All his hunger. All his emptiness.
The void rushed toward Mara like a tidal wave.
She could not stop it. Could not survive it.
This was the end.
But then someone stepped in front of her. Someone small and fragile and human.
Isla.
"No!" Isla screamed. She threw herself between Mara and the void.
The darkness consumed her instantly. Isla vanished. Erased. Gone.
"ISLA!" Mara screamed.
"Done!" Kieran's voice boomed. "The seal is complete!"
Light erupted from the ground. A circle of pure white energy surrounded Oblivion.
"What? No!" Oblivion tried to move but the light held him in place. "You cannot seal me! I am eternal!"
"Nothing is eternal," Kieran said coldly. "Not even the end."
The light grew brighter. Pulled Oblivion downward. Into the earth. Into whatever prison Kieran had prepared.
"This is not over!" Oblivion screamed. "I will return! I always return!"
"But not today," Kieran said.
The light flashed. Oblivion vanished. Sealed away.
Silence fell over the battlefield.
They had won. But at terrible cost.
Mara collapsed to the ground. Sobbing. Isla was gone. Her friend. Her sister in all but blood. Erased from existence.
"She saved you," Zevran said quietly. Tears ran down his face too. "She gave her life for yours."
"She already sacrificed her memories! This is not fair! She deserved better!"
"She chose this. Chose to protect you one last time. Even without her memories, she knew you were important. Worth saving." Zevran held Mara as she cried. "She died a hero."
"I do not want heroes! I want my friend back!"
But Isla was gone. And nothing could change that.
Around them, wolves were counting casualties. Over a thousand had been erased by Oblivion's void. A thousand wolves who simply ceased to exist.
The victory felt hollow. Empty.
"Is he really sealed?" Luna asked Kieran.
"For now. The seal will hold for maybe fifty years. Maybe a hundred. Then it will weaken. And Oblivion will break free."
"So we just delayed him. Not stopped him."
"Yes. But fifty years is better than nothing. It gives the next generation time to prepare. Time to find a permanent solution."
"If there is a permanent solution."
"There always is. We just have not found it yet."
They burned the dead. Or at least the bodies that remained. Those who had been erased left nothing behind. No body. No grave. Just memories.
Mara spoke at the funeral. "We lost many today. Friends. Family. Heroes. They died fighting for something bigger than themselves. Fighting for a future where their children could live in peace. We owe them that future. We owe them a world worth their sacrifice."
"How do we build that world?" someone called out.
"Together. By remembering what we learned. That strength alone is not enough. That power without compassion is meaningless. That true leadership means serving others, not ruling them." Mara looked at all the faces watching her. "I promise you. I will build a kingdom worthy of those we lost. Or I will die trying."
Everyone howled in agreement.
Over the next weeks, they rebuilt. Returned to the Great Stone Circle. Started creating the new government Mara had promised.
A council of elders from every pack. Representatives from cat clans and other species. Even human voices in positions of power.
It was messy. Complicated. Full of arguments and disagreements.
But it was fair. And that was what mattered.
"You are doing well," Zevran said one night. They sat on the balcony of their new home. A small house away from the main palace. A place just for them.
"I do not feel like I am doing well. I feel like I am barely keeping everything together."
"That is leadership. Everyone feels that way. You just do not show it."
"I miss Isla. Every day."
"So do I. But she would want you to keep going. Keep building. Keep hoping."
"I know. I just wish she was here to see it."
"Maybe she is. Somewhere. Watching." Zevran took her hand. "Speaking of watching. There is something I want to show you."
"What?"
"Come with me."
He led her inside. To a small room they had not used yet. When he opened the door, Mara gasped.
It was a nursery. Painted in soft colors. Filled with toys and blankets and everything a baby would need.
"What is this?" Mara asked.
"Our future. If you want it." Zevran smiled nervously. "I know we have been through hell. I know we have barely had time to breathe. But I also know that life is short. Too short to wait for the perfect moment."
"Are you saying what I think you are saying?"
"I am saying I want to start a family. With you. If you want that too."
Mara felt tears in her eyes. Happy tears this time. "Yes. I want that. I want everything with you."
"Good. Because I already told Nyra and she is preparing fertility herbs and—"
"You told Nyra before telling me?"
"She guessed! The witch guesses everything!"
Mara laughed. Pulled him close. Kissed him. "I love you. Even when you are ridiculous."
"Especially when I am ridiculous."
They held each other in the nursery. Imagining a future filled with laughter and children and peace.
It would not be easy. There would be more challenges. More enemies. More impossible situations.
But they would face them together. As they always had.
And somehow, that was enough.
