Chapter 42 Lost and Found
Isla was standing now. Eyes wild. Looking at everyone like they were strangers.
"Get away from me!" she screamed. "All of you! Get away!"
"Isla, it is okay," Mara said gently. "You are safe. We are your friends."
"I do not know you! I do not know anyone!" Isla backed away, trembling. "Why cannot I remember anything? What happened to me?"
"You saved us. You sacrificed your memories to break a curse." Mara stepped closer slowly. "Please. Let me explain."
"No! Stay back!" Isla transformed. Her wolf form was brown and small. She ran.
"Wait!" Mara tried to follow but she was too exhausted. Too drained.
Luna caught Isla quickly. "I have her. She cannot run far. Not in her condition."
"Bring her back gently," Mara said. "Do not scare her more than she already is."
Luna returned with Isla in wolf form. The girl was not fighting anymore. Just shaking with fear.
"What do we do?" Zevran asked. "She has no memories. She does not know who she is."
"Then we teach her," Mara said. "We tell her stories. Show her who she was. Help her become someone new if that is what she needs."
"That could take months. Years."
"Then it takes years. I owe her that much." Mara looked at Isla with tears in her eyes. "She gave up everything for me. The least I can do is help her rebuild."
Kieran approached. He still looked shocked at being in a normal body. "I can help. I know magic that might restore some of her memories."
"Really?" Mara's heart leaped with hope.
"Maybe. Not all of them. But some. Enough that she will not feel completely lost." Kieran knelt beside Isla. "May I try?"
Isla looked at him with frightened eyes. But something in Kieran's face must have seemed kind. She nodded slowly.
Kieran placed his hand on her forehead. Blue light glowed between them.
Isla gasped. Images flashed through her mind. Fragments. Pieces. Not complete memories but impressions. Feelings. Emotions tied to people.
When the light faded, Isla looked at Mara differently.
"You were kind to me," she said slowly. "I do not remember the details. But I remember the feeling. Warmth. Safety. Friendship."
Mara started crying. "Yes. We were friends. The best of friends."
"Then I would like to be friends again. If that is okay."
"More than okay." Mara pulled Isla into a hug. "We will rebuild your memories together. One story at a time."
They sat there together while the sun rose. While the others made camp. While the world slowly returned to normal.
Or as normal as it could be after defeating a Witch Queen.
"What happens now?" Riven asked. He was sitting with Kieran. The two of them looked like they had much to discuss.
"Now we go home," Mara said. "Back to the Great Stone Circle. Back to our people."
"And then?"
"Then I figure out how to actually lead. How to build the better world we have been fighting for."
"You will be a good leader," Luna said. "You already are."
"I am a terrified girl pretending to know what I am doing."
"That is what all good leaders are." Kieran smiled. "Trust me. I was a leader once. The fear never goes away. You just get better at hiding it."
They rested for a day. Let the wounded heal. Let everyone catch their breath.
Then they began the long journey home.
Along the way, they encountered wolves from other packs. Word had spread about what happened. About how Mara defeated the Witch Queen. About how she freed the Shadow King.
Some wolves bowed. Some cheered. Some just stared in awe.
Mara hated it. Hated being treated like a hero. Like someone special.
"Get used to it," Zevran said. "You are a legend now. The Moon Wolf who saved the kingdom."
"I did not do it alone. Everyone helped."
"But you were the one who refused to give up. Who kept fighting even when everything seemed impossible. That is why they follow you."
"I do not want them to follow me. I just want peace."
"Then build peace. You have the power to do it now."
They reached the Great Stone Circle three days later. Thousands of wolves were waiting. They had heard about the battle. About the victory.
When Mara appeared, they erupted in cheers. Howls filled the air.
Elder Sage stood in the center of the circle. "The Moon Wolf returns victorious! She has defeated the Witch Queen! Freed the Shadow King! Saved us all!"
More cheers. Mara felt overwhelmed. She wanted to run and hide.
But Zevran squeezed her hand. "You can do this. Just breathe."
Mara stepped into the circle. All eyes turned to her.
"I am not a hero," she said loudly. Everyone went quiet. "I am just someone who did what needed to be done. We all did. Every wolf who fought. Every wolf who supported us. Every wolf who believed in something better. We are all heroes."
"But you led us!" someone called out. "You showed us the way!"
"I stumbled forward blindly and got lucky. That is not leadership. That is desperation." Mara looked at all the faces watching her. "Real leadership is what comes next. Building a kingdom where wolves and humans can live in peace. Where power does not mean cruelty. Where strength is used to protect, not to dominate. That is the hard part. And I cannot do it alone."
She turned to Elder Sage. "I need help. I need advisors. I need people who know how to run a kingdom."
"You have us," Marcus stepped forward. "We will help you build this new world."
"And us," Queen Adira appeared with her cat warriors. "The Cat Clan will support you."
One by one, leaders from different packs stepped forward. Pledging support. Offering help.
Mara felt tears in her eyes. "Thank you. All of you. Together we can do this."
"Then it is settled," Elder Sage said. "Mara, the Moon Wolf, will lead us into a new era. All in favor?"
Every wolf howled in agreement. The sound was deafening.
"I cannot believe this is happening," Mara whispered to Zevran.
"Believe it. You earned this."
That night, there was another feast. But this one was different. This one felt hopeful. Joyful. Like the future was finally bright.
Mara sat with Zevran, watching everyone celebrate.
"Are you happy?" he asked.
"Exhausted. Terrified. Overwhelmed. But yes. Happy." She leaned against him. "We did it. We actually survived."
"We did. And now we get to build something beautiful."
"What do you want to build first?"
"A house. Somewhere quiet. Just for us. Where we can escape when leadership gets too heavy."
"That sounds perfect."
They sat together, watching the stars. Holding each other. Finally at peace.
But that peace was interrupted by a messenger.
"Moon Wolf! Urgent news!"
Mara stood quickly. "What is it?"
"A pack from the Western Territories. They are under attack. By something they have never seen before. They beg for your help."
"What is attacking them?"
"They do not know. But they say it is worse than Shadow Wolves. Worse than anything." The messenger's voice shook. "They say it is pure evil."
