Chapter 112 Ch 112

Chapter 112 Ch 112
The Devourer was silent, caught in contradiction it had not acknowledged, trapped by truth it had not wanted to face. "WE. ARE. WHAT. WE. ARE," it said finally, voice carrying something that might have been shame, might have been regret, might have been first genuine sorrow it had experienced. "WE. ARE. HUNGER. THAT. HAS. CONSUMED. HUNGER. WE. ARE. ENDING. THAT. HAS. ENDED. ENDINGS. WE. CANNOT. SIMPLY. STOP. BEING. WHAT. WE. ARE. CANNOT. CEASE. CONSUMING. WITHOUT. CEASING. TO. EXIST. YOUR. LESSON. SHOWED. US. VALUE. OF. PRESERVATION. BUT. IT. DID. NOT. SHOW. US. HOW. TO. BE. SOMETHING. OTHER. THAN. WHAT. WE. ARE. HOW. TO. EXIST. WITHOUT. CONSUMING. HOW. TO. BE. SATISFIED. WHEN. HUNGER. IS. OUR. FUNDAMENTAL. NATURE."
"Then the lesson is incomplete," Zevran said, stepping forward to stand beside Mara. "Then teaching is not finished, then demonstration is only halfway done. You learned why consumption is not answer, but you did not learn what answer actually is, you did not discover how to exist as hunger without constantly feeding, you did not find way to be what you are without destroying everything you touch."
"AND. YOU. CAN. TEACH. THIS," the Devourer asked, hope and doubt warring in its voice. "YOU. CAN. SHOW. US. HOW. TO. BE. HUNGER. WITHOUT. CONSUMING. HOW. TO. EXIST. AS. WHAT. WE. ARE. WITHOUT. ENDING. EVERYTHING. HOW. TO. SATISFY. NEED. THAT. DEFINES. US. WITHOUT. DESTROYING. ALL. WE. ENCOUNTER."
"Yes," Mara said, understanding flooding through her, solution forming that was even more impossible than first lesson but might be only way to truly save not just her reality but all realities. "But it requires something you have never done, something you have never attempted, something that terrifies you more than anything you have consumed: it requires you to surrender control, to trust someone else, to allow yourself to be transformed instead of doing all the transforming. Are you willing? Are you brave enough? Are you desperate enough for satisfaction that you will risk becoming something entirely new?"
"WHAT. DO. YOU. PROPOSE," the Devourer asked cautiously.
"Merge with me," Mara said, and the words caused gasps from everyone listening, caused Ash and Valdris to scream protests, caused reality itself to shudder at impossibility of suggestion. "Not consuming me, not eating me, not making me part of you. But actually merging, actually combining, actually becoming partnership where we both exist, where we both contribute, where we both remain ourselves while creating something new together. I did this with Oblivion for three days, I experienced what it was like to be hunger while teaching hunger what it was like to be love. And it worked, it transformed Oblivion, it made it capable of choosing preservation over consumption. The same can work for you, the same transformation can happen, the same change can occur. But only if you trust me, only if you surrender to process, only if you accept that being vulnerable is sometimes necessary for growth."
"THIS. IS. INSANE," the Devourer said. "THIS. IS. DANGEROUS. THIS. IS. RISKING. EVERYTHING. WE. ARE. FOR. POSSIBILITY. OF. BECOMING. SOMETHING. WE. MIGHT. NOT. RECOGNIZE. MIGHT. NOT. ACCEPT. MIGHT. NOT. WANT. TO. BE."
"Yes," Mara agreed. "But the alternative is remaining what you are, remaining hungry forever, remaining isolated in consumption, remaining being that can never be satisfied, never be content, never be anything except endless need. Is that better? Is that preferable? Is that worth protecting by refusing to risk change?"
The Devourer considered, wrestling with decision that was harder than any it had faced, more terrifying than any reality it had consumed, more important than any choice it had made in its entire existence. Finally it spoke, voice carrying resolution, carrying fear, carrying desperate hope that maybe, impossibly, this could work. "WE. ACCEPT. WE. MERGE. WE. TRUST. YOU. MOON. WOLF. WE. RISK. TRANSFORMATION. WE. CHOOSE. POSSIBILITY. OF. SATISFACTION. OVER. CERTAINTY. OF. ENDLESS. HUNGER. DO. IT. CHANGE. US. SAVE. US. MAKE. US. MORE. THAN. WHAT. WE. ARE."
"No!" Ash screamed inside Mara's mind. "You cannot do this! You cannot merge with the Devourer! It consumed Oblivion! It ate the First! It ended entire realities! If you merge with it, it will consume you from inside! It will take over! It will become you while ending you! This is suicide!"
"Or this is salvation," Mara said calmly. "Or this is only way to truly stop it, or this is how we save all realities instead of just ours. Trust me, Ash, trust me, Valdris, trust that I know what I am doing even when it seems impossible, even when it appears doomed, even when it looks like terrible mistake. I have survived six deaths, I have merged with Oblivion successfully, I have taught compassion to unteachable. I can do this. I can survive this. I can transform the Devourer into something that chooses preservation over consumption."
"And if you are wrong?" Valdris asked quietly. "If you fail? If it consumes you and becomes unstoppable being that carries your face, your power, your knowledge while remaining fundamentally hungry?"
"Then you were right to doubt," Mara said honestly. "Then I made terrible mistake, then I doomed everything by being too optimistic, too trusting, too certain that love conquers all. But I would rather fail attempting impossible than succeed at accepting inevitable. That is who I am, that is what I do, that is why people call me the Moon Wolf even when they should call me the Foolish Wolf who takes risks no sane person would consider."
She looked at Isla, at Zevran, at everyone she loved. "If this goes wrong, if I am consumed, if the Devourer wins, you run, you hide, you survive long enough to find another way to stop it. Do not try to save me, do not sacrifice yourselves for mistake I made, do not throw away your lives for my failure. Promise me, all of you, promise you will survive no matter what happens to me."
"We promise," they said, though Mara could see the lie in their eyes, could sense they would never abandon her, would fight for her even when fighting was hopeless. But she accepted the lie, appreciated the intent, knew they meant well even if they could not keep promise.
"Then we begin," she said, and she opened herself completely to the Devourer, allowing it to enter her consciousness, allowing it to merge with her soul, allowing it to combine with her existence in way that was terrifying, impossible, absolutely insane.
