Chapter 97 The Rescue
Chapter 97 The Rescue
POV: Rafe (Age 19 - Three Weeks After Elara's Imprisonment)
Three weeks of failed negotiations and I'm done trying diplomacy.
Elara won't compromise. Lord Brennan won't release. Diplomatic solutions don't exist. Time for different approach.
"We extract her," I tell assembled team. Mom, the dads, Vera, key allies. Everyone who matters to transformation's survival. "Negotiations failed. Diplomacy failed. We use force. We bring Elara home."
Through my mate bond I feel Vera's concern. Feel her recognizing I'm abandoning my usual approach. Feel her uncertain if I'm making right choice.
"Extraction means violence," Jax warns. "Means violating conservative territory with armed force. Means declaring war on Lord Brennan's authority. Means escalating from political opposition to actual combat. That corrupts transformation. Makes it about force rather than choice."
"Leaving Elara imprisoned corrupts transformation worse," I counter. "Leaving twin heir captive shows that opposition can win through intimidation. Shows that conservative lords can block transformation through imprisonment. Shows that we won't defend our own people. That's worse corruption than using force to rescue her."
Through whatever bond connects me to Mom I feel her agreement. Feel her absolutely committed to bringing Elara home. Feel her willing to use violence if necessary.
"I'll lead extraction team," Logan offers. "I'll enter conservative territory. I'll break Elara, Kael, and Marcus out of prison. I'll use force as necessary. I'll bring them home."
"I'm coming," I tell him. "She's my twin. I'm not sending others to rescue her while I stay safe. I'm participating. Non-negotiable."
Through my mate bond I feel Vera's alarm. Feel her terrified of me risking myself. Feel her wanting to stop me but recognizing she can't.
"You're not trained for combat extraction," Logan argues. "You're political twin. You're diplomatic. You're not built for violence. You'll be liability rather than asset."
"I'm going anyway," I tell him. "Train me fast. Teach me enough to not die immediately. Give me whatever I need to participate. But I'm going. Elara faces captivity while I coordinate from safety. That ends now."
Through my mate bond I feel Vera's recognition that I've decided. Feel her accepting that I'm going despite risk. Feel her supporting me while terrified for me.
"I'm coming too," Vera says. Her voice firm despite omega instincts that usually make her avoid conflict. "If Rafe goes into danger, I'm with him. That's what mate bonds mean. We face risk together."
"No," I tell her immediately. "You're not combat trained. You're not built for this. You'd be actual liability. I go. You stay. You continue legitimate work while I handle rescue."
Through the mate bond I feel her hurt. Feel her recognizing I'm protecting her. Feel her resenting protection while understanding its necessity.
"Fine," she says. "But you come back. You survive. You don't die playing hero for your twin. That's non-negotiable."
"Deal," I tell her.
The planning begins. Logan teaching me combat basics. Asher developing strategic extraction plan. Jax preparing political fallout management. Everyone contributing to rescue operation.
Three days of intensive training. Three days of learning to fight. Three days of preparing for violence I've avoided my entire life.
Through my mate bond I feel Vera's constant fear. Feel her terrified I'll die. Feel her supporting me despite terror. Feel her being exactly what I need.
Through the twin bond I feel Elara's distant imprisonment. Feel her maintaining principles. Feel her refusing to compromise. Feel her being stubbornly herself even in captivity.
I'm coming for you, I send through our connection. Three days. I'm bringing you home. Hold on.
Through the bond I feel her alarm. Don't risk yourself. Don't do violence for me. Don't become what you're not just to rescue me. I'm surviving. I'm fine. Don't corrupt yourself saving me.
You don't get to tell me not to rescue you, I send back. You're my twin. I'm bringing you home. Whether you want me to or not. Whether you approve or not. This is happening.
Through our bond I feel her complicated emotions. Gratitude mixing with fear. Love mixing with concern that I'm risking too much. Recognition that I'm being as stubborn as she is.
The extraction team assembles. Logan leading. Ten trained fighters. Asher coordinating strategy. And me. Political twin playing soldier. Diplomatic heir attempting violence.
Mom finds me before we leave. "You don't have to do this. You can coordinate from here. You can let Logan handle extraction. You can stay safe."
"I know," I tell her. "I'm going anyway. Elara is imprisoned because she went into conservative territory. Because she did dangerous work. Because she refused to let opposition stop her. I'm not less brave than my twin. I'm not less committed. I'm just less reckless. But this isn't reckless. This is necessary."
Through whatever bond connects us I feel Mom's pride. Feel her recognizing I'm becoming who I need to be. Feel her terrified but supporting anyway.
"Bring my daughter home," she tells me. "Bring yourself home. Bring everyone home. That's the only acceptable outcome."
"That's the plan," I tell her.
We leave at dawn. Extraction team entering conservative territory. Violating Lord Brennan's sovereignty. Committing the territorial violation Elara was imprisoned for.
The irony isn't lost on me.
Through my mate bond I feel Vera's constant fear. Feel her tracking me through connection. Feel her praying to Moon Goddess that I survive.
Through the twin bond I feel Elara's alarm. Feel her recognizing we're coming. Feel her wanting to protest but unable to stop us.
The prison is guarded. Ten wolves. Professional security. Prepared for potential rescue attempt.
Logan assesses quickly. "We can take them. Use coordination. Use Oracle-Alpha hybrid power. Use everything we have. We can win this."
"Without killing anyone," I add. "We extract Elara without killing conservative territory wolves. We don't make this worse by leaving bodies. We win without lethal force."
Logan looks at me. "That makes it harder. That increases our risk. That might not be possible."
"Make it possible," I tell him. "Transformation is about support. About connection. About helping wolves. Not about killing them. We extract without killing. That's non-negotiable."
Through my mate bond I feel Vera's distant support. Feel her recognizing I'm maintaining principles even during rescue. Feel her proud of me.
The fight begins. Logan leads. Fighters coordinating. Strategic approach rather than just force.
I'm terrible at combat. Barely trained. Barely competent. But I'm Oracle-Alpha hybrid. My Oracle voice works even if my fighting doesn't.
"Sleep," I command. Targeting guards. Using power I've mostly avoided. Forcing compliance through Oracle magic.
Half the guards drop. Compelled into unconsciousness. Non-lethal. Effective.
The remaining guards fight. Harder now. Recognizing we're actually threat.
Logan leads fighters through them. Coordinated. Efficient. Minimally violent. Winning without killing exactly like I demanded.
We reach the cells. Elara is inside. With Kael and Marcus. All three imprisoned together.
"About time," Elara says when I open her cell. "Three weeks is excessive rescue response time. You're getting slow in your old age."
Through the twin bond I feel her relief. Feel her grateful despite attitude. Feel her loving me for coming.
"You're welcome," I tell her dryly. "Next time I'll let you rot in prison longer if you prefer."
Through our bond I feel her smile. Feel her recognizing that we're both being ourselves. Feel her glad I'm still diplomatic twin even while doing violent rescue.
Kael and Marcus emerge from adjacent cells. Looking worse for captivity. But alive. Functional. Ready to escape.
"Can you fight?" Logan asks them.
"Well enough," Kael confirms. "Three weeks of imprisonment didn't break us. Just made us angry. We can fight our way out."
The extraction continues. Fighting through prison. Avoiding lethal force. Using Oracle commands to drop guards without killing.
It's working. We're winning. We're actually rescuing them.
Then Lord Brennan appears. With reinforcements. Twenty additional wolves. Professional fighters prepared for exactly this scenario.
"Twin heirs," he says. Looking at Elara and me. "Both violating my territory now. Both subject to imprisonment. Both proving that transformation is about force rather than choice. Thank you for making my point so dramatically."
Through the twin bond I feel Elara's fury. Feel her wanting to fight. Feel her Oracle power gathering.
Through my mate bond I feel Vera's distant terror. Feel her recognizing we're surrounded. Feel her praying I survive.
"We're leaving," I tell Lord Brennan. My voice carrying Oracle resonance I rarely use. "We're taking our people. We're extracting them from unjust imprisonment. You can fight us. You can try to stop us. But we're leaving anyway."
"You're outnumbered," Lord Brennan points out. "You're surrounded. You're on my territory. You're subject to my law. You're not leaving. You're joining your sister in imprisonment."
Logan assesses quickly. "We can fight through them. We can win. But not without casualties. Not without killing. We'd have to use lethal force. Have to choose violence over principle."
Through the twin bond I feel Elara recognizing the choice. Feel her understanding that rescuing her requires compromising principles about non-lethal force. Feel her hating that her imprisonment created this situation.
"Don't kill for me," she tells Logan. "Don't compromise transformation principles to rescue me. I'd rather stay imprisoned than have my freedom cost lives."
"Not your choice," I tell her. "Not anymore. We're here. We're rescuing you. We're leaving. All of us. Together."
I gather Oracle power. More than I've ever used. More than I've ever needed. Pulling from depths I didn't know I had.
"Sleep," I command. Oracle voice amplified by desperation. Targeting all twenty reinforcements plus Lord Brennan. Commanding reality through sheer force of will.
The power works. All twenty reinforcements drop. Compelled into unconsciousness. Lord Brennan staggers but fights the command.
"You're not strong enough," he says. "You're barely trained Oracle. You're political twin playing at power. You can't command me. Can't force compliance. Can't—"
Elara adds her Oracle voice to mine. Twin synchronization activating. Our powers combining exactly like they did during Academy training.
"Sleep," we command together. Combined Oracle voice carrying undeniable weight. Twin heir power synchronized.
Lord Brennan drops. Compelled. Defeated through Oracle magic rather than violence.
The extraction team runs. All of us. Escaping while guards are unconscious. Fleeing conservative territory.
We make it across border. Make it to neutral territory. Make it to safety.
We rescued Elara. We extracted Kael and Marcus. We brought everyone home.
Without killing anyone. Without compromising principles about lethal force. Without corruption despite violence.
Through the twin bond I feel Elara's overwhelming relief. Feel her grateful. Feel her recognizing I did violence for her while maintaining integrity. Feel her loving me for that.
Through my mate bond I feel Vera's joy. Feel her grateful I survived. Feel her waiting for my return.
"Thank you," Elara tells me. Speaking aloud. "For coming for me. For risking yourself. For rescuing me without compromising transformation. For being exactly the twin I needed."
"That's what twins do," I tell her. "We rescue each other. We risk for each other. We face violence together when necessary. Even when one of us is diplomatic and the other is reckless."
Through our bond I feel her smile. Feel her recognizing that we're complementary. Feel her understanding that we both served transformation through different approaches.
We head home. Extraction successful. Rescue complete. Everyone alive. Everyone safe.
Three weeks of imprisonment ended. Three weeks of failed negotiations resolved through force. Three weeks of captivity ended through violence that maintained integrity.
We're both changed. Both did things we wouldn't have done before. Both grew beyond our original limitations.
But we're together. We're safe. We're home.
That's what matters.
