Chapter 80 Kael Steele

Chapter 80 Kael Steele

POV: Rafe (Age 17 - One Week Before 18th Birthday)
The new Elite Trio makes themselves known on day seven.
We're in Advanced Combat Theory when they enter. Three upper-class Alphas moving with coordination that speaks to years of training together.
The leader is tall. Built like Logan. Carrying himself with dominance that makes other students defer automatically.
"Rafe and Elara Sterling," he says. His voice carrying authority that demands attention. "Twin heirs. Prophesied ones. We've been hearing stories."
Through the bond I feel Elara's immediate assessment. Feel her sizing them up. Feel her wolf recognizing challenge when it appears.
"And you are?" I ask politely. Buying time while I assess situation.
"Kael Steele," the leader introduces. His eyes are familiar. Logan's eyes. Family resemblance that's unmistakable. "Distant cousin to your father. These are Marcus Blackwood and Daniel Sterling. We're what passes for Elite Trio in current Academy hierarchy."
Through the bond I feel Elara's recognition. "Blackwood. Sterling. Steele. Same families as Mom's Elite Trio. That's not coincidence."
"No," Kael agrees. "It's legacy. Our fathers were Council supporters. Your fathers were Elite Trio who sided with Oracle. We're what happens when those lines continue."
Marcus steps forward. Asher's family resemblance clear in his features. "We're not here to fight. We're here to assess. See if twin heirs live up to legend. See if you're actually threat or just Academy curiosity."
Daniel speaks last. Jax's family written in his ice-blue eyes. "Reformed Council is watching. Pack lords are watching. Everyone wants to know what twin heirs choose. We're here to make our own assessment."
Through the bond I feel Elara's defensive instinct rising. Feel her wanting to challenge. Feel her wolf responding to dominance display with dominance of her own.
Carefully, I send through the bond. They're testing us. Don't give them what they want.
Through the connection I feel her restraint. Feel her holding back when instinct says attack. Feel her trusting my judgment even when it goes against her nature.
"Assess all you want," I tell the new Elite Trio. "We're not hiding. Not pretending. You want to see what twin heirs can do, watch us in training. Watch us in class. Watch us fail and succeed and learn. We're not performing on demand."
Kael's eyes narrow. "Refusing evaluation? That's not how Academy hierarchy works. Elites test. Lower ranks comply. That's tradition."
"We're not lower ranks," Elara says. Her voice carrying edge that makes several students back away. "We're Oracle heirs. We're prophesied. We're not part of your hierarchy. We're outside it."
Through the bond I feel her certainty. Feel her recognizing we don't fit Academy social structure. Feel her using that as shield against Elite dominance games.
"Outside hierarchy means you don't get hierarchy protection," Marcus points out. "Means when Reformed Council comes, you're alone. Means when pack lords demand demonstration, you have no allies. Sure you want that position?"
He's right. Being outside hierarchy is isolating. Dangerous. Exactly what Vera warned about on first night.
But accepting Elite dominance means submitting. Means acknowledging we're beneath them. Means playing their games.
"We have our parents," I point out. "We have each other. We have Academy teachers. We don't need Elite Trio protection. We need space to prepare for prophecy."
Kael studies me. Really studies. Not just dismissing. Actually assessing.
"Seven days until your birthday," he says. "Seven days until you choose. You really think you'll be ready? Think you understand what prophecy actually demands?"
Through the bond I feel Elara's uncertainty matching mine. We've been training. Learning. Testing twin bond under stress. But are we actually ready? Do we actually understand what prophecy demands?
"We'll find out in seven days," I tell Kael. "Same as everyone else."
"Fair answer," Kael says. Something in his expression shifts. Less challenging. More curious. "Word of advice from someone who's studied prophecy interpretation: third path usually requires sacrifice original paths don't. Transformation costs more than unity or destruction. Make sure you know what you're willing to pay."
He leaves. Marcus and Daniel following. New Elite Trio exiting as dramatically as they entered.
The classroom is silent. Everyone processing what just happened. Elite Trio challenged twin heirs. Twin heirs didn't submit. Status quo disrupted.
Through the bond I feel Elara's complicated response. "Kael Steele. Logan's cousin. He's—"
"Attractive," I finish through the bond. Feel her spike of embarrassment at being read so easily. "You noticed."
"He's Elite," she protests. "Challenger. Probably Reformed Council sympathizer. I shouldn't find him attractive."
"But you do," I observe. Not judging. Just noting. "That's going to complicate things."
Through the bond I feel her conflict. Feel her attracted to exactly the kind of wolf she should avoid. Feel her recognizing pattern Mom warned about.
"I'm not going there," she tells me firmly. "Not getting distracted by Elite Alpha one week before prophecy. Not making Mom's mistakes."
"Mom's 'mistakes' are our fathers," I point out. "Elite Trio who became her mates. Who've been loyal for seventeen years. Who built tri-bond that sustains her Oracle power. Maybe Elite connections aren't mistakes. Maybe they're pattern that works."
Through the bond I feel Elara's resistance warring with recognition that I have point. Feel her wanting to reject attraction she doesn't understand. Feel her scared of repeating patterns.
Class continues. But everything has changed. New Elite Trio knows we exist. They've assessed us. They've given cryptic warning about third path costs.
And my twin sister is attracted to their leader despite every reason not to be.
Seven days until prophecy. Seven days until everything changes.
Seven days to figure out if patterns repeat or transform.

Later that day, Vera finds me alone.
"Kael Steele," she says without preamble. "Your sister is attracted to him. You know this complicates everything."
"How do you know?" I ask. Then realize: "Omega observation skills."
"Omega survival skills," Vera corrects. "We watch. We notice. We see things Alphas miss because they're performing instead of observing. Your sister looked at Kael the way your mother looked at Elite Trio before admitting the bond. That's dangerous."
Through the bond I feel Elara distant. She's in individual training with Logan. Can't hear this conversation. But I'll tell her later. Twin bond doesn't keep secrets effectively.
"Why dangerous?" I ask Vera. "Mom's Elite Trio became our fathers. Became her mates. Became positive force in her life."
"After months of psychological warfare," Vera points out. "After they tortured her. After bond forced connection they wouldn't have chosen voluntarily. Your sister doesn't have months. She has seven days. Getting attached to Elite Alpha seven days before prophecy is distraction she can't afford."
She's right. But I also understand something Vera might not.
"What if it's not distraction?" I ask. "What if it's pattern? What if Elite connections are part of transformation path? What if twin heirs need Elite Trio same way Oracle needed them?"
Vera is quiet. Processing. "That's actually interesting theory. Prophesied pattern repeating. Elite Trio forming around Oracle heirs. Could be structural necessity rather than coincidence."
"But we don't know," I admit. "Don't know if pattern is required or if it's just family history repeating. Don't know if Elara being attracted to Kael is prophecy or just chemistry."
"Only one way to find out," Vera says. "Let it play out. See if Kael shows interest. See if others form around you. See if pattern actually repeats or if this is just teenage attraction with bad timing."
Through the bond I feel Elara returning from training. Feel her looking for me. Feel her wanting to discuss Elite Trio encounter.
"I need to go," I tell Vera. "My twin needs me."
"Before you go," Vera says. "Something else I've noticed. You're attracted to me. Not as obviously as your sister is to Kael. But it's there. Omega girl with theories. Different from Elite Alpha. Complementary to your twin's pattern."
She's right. I am attracted to Vera. Have been since first meeting. Her intelligence. Her observation skills. Her willingness to challenge prophecy thinking.
"Is this going somewhere?" I ask carefully.
"Depends," Vera says. "Are you willing to let yourself be attracted to someone who isn't prophesied? Who isn't part of grand destiny? Who's just omega girl with opinions about power structures?"
"Yes," I tell her honestly. "Prophecy doesn't control everything. Doesn't dictate who I'm attracted to. Doesn't write entire future. I can choose. And I choose to be interested in you."
Vera smiles. First genuine smile I've seen from her. "Good answer. Ask me again after prophecy. If you survive the choice, if the world doesn't end, if you're still interested in omega with opinions—ask me then. I might say yes."
She leaves. I'm standing there processing when Elara finds me.
"Vera?" she asks through the bond. Feel her reading my emotional state. "You like her."
"Yes," I confirm. "Like you like Kael. We're both attracted to people we probably shouldn't be distracted by one week before prophecy."
Through the bond I feel Elara's complicated relief. "At least we're equally stupid."
"At least," I agree.
We walk together toward evening meal. Both of us carrying new complications. Both of us recognizing patterns that might be prophecy or might be just chemistry.
Seven days until our birthday.
Seven days until we choose paths that define our generation.
Seven days to figure out if Elite connections are required or just recurring pattern.
Seven days to survive while being attracted to exactly the wrong people at exactly the wrong time.
But at least we're being stupid together.
That's what twins do.
