Chapter 2 The River
The basket tumbled through darkness.
Inside, wrapped in silver cloth that glowed with dying magic, two infants lay pressed together the way they had been in the womb. The river roared around them with deafening fury, but the protection runes still held. Barely.
Ancient magic flickered across the woven reeds like dying embers, keeping the water out and keeping the babies safe.
For now.
The current carried them faster, the basket spinning wildly as it was dragged downstream. It tilted dangerously, nearly capsizing, then righted itself at the last possible moment. Overhead, the full moon watched in silence.
In the distance, a woman's scream cut off abruptly, swallowed by the night and the rushing water.
Both infants' eyes snapped open at the same moment. Silver-grey, luminous, impossibly aware for newborns. They stared at each other in the darkness, their tiny faces inches apart. No sound passed their lips. The sealing spell held them mute, trapping their cries inside their bodies.
But something passed between them anyway. A recognition that went deeper than blood. A promise that transcended words.

Then the rapids hit.
The basket slammed into a boulder with enough force to crack the protection runes. Water sprayed through gaps in the weaving, soaking the silver cloth. The male infant's hand found his sister's, tiny fingers interlocking with desperate strength.
The basket hit another rock. Then another. Each impact sent shockwaves through the fragile vessel. The magic flickered like a candle in the wind. Faded. Died.
Water poured in through the broken weaving.
The silver cloth began to unwrap, coming loose from the force of the current. Suddenly they were no longer one bundle but two separate bundles, the current pulling them in different directions. The boy's hand slipped from his sister's grasp despite his desperate attempt to hold on.
Their silent screams matched, mouths open wide in soundless agony.
The basket split down the middle with a sound like breaking bone.
Two halves. Two infants. Two paths.
The girl's half veered sharply toward the eastern bank, caught in an eddy that pulled her toward the shallows. The boy's half shot toward the western shore, carried by the main current toward calmer waters.
Within seconds, they were separated by the width of the river, the distance growing with every moment.
Neither could cry out. Neither could call for the other. They could only feel the emptiness where the other half of their soul used to be.
Eastern Bank - Dawn
The woman's feet had gone completely numb hours ago.
She'd been walking since midnight, barefoot and exhausted, trying to clear her head after another brutal fight with her mate. Another accusation that she was broken, useless, barren. Another night where his fists had done the talking.
She was so tired of the silence. So tired of being nothing.
The eastern bank of the River Styx was technically pack territory, but this far out into the wilderness, no one ever came. The woman stopped at the water's edge and stared at the rushing current. It would be so easy. One step into the water. Two. Let the river carry her away from all this pain.
She was seriously considering it when she heard a sound.
Not crying exactly. Something else. A desperate, gasping sound that was almost imperceptible under the roar of the river.
Like a baby.
Her heart seized in her chest. She spun around, searching frantically. There. In the reeds about twenty feet downstream, barely visible in the pre-dawn darkness. Something wrapped in silver cloth, tangled in the roots at the water's edge.
She ran.
Her bare feet slipped on wet rocks and her thin nightgown caught on branches, but she didn't slow down. She crashed through the reeds and fell to her knees beside the tangled basket, her hands shaking violently as she reached for the bundle inside.
A baby girl.
Impossibly small. Lips tinged blue from the cold. Chest barely moving. Eyes closed.
Not breathing.
"No, no, no," the woman gasped, scooping the infant into her arms with desperate care. The baby was so cold, her tiny body limp and unresponsive. "Come on, little one. Breathe. Please breathe."
Nothing happened.
The woman's wolf surged forward inside her, lending strength and primal instinct. She turned the baby over carefully, supporting the tiny head with one hand while pressing firmly on the small back with the other. Water dribbled from the infant's mouth, but still no breath came.
"Come on," she begged, her voice breaking as tears streamed down her face. "Come on, sweetheart. Fight. Please fight for me."
She tipped the baby upside down and patted her back more firmly, desperation making her movements almost frantic. More water came up, and the baby's body convulsed slightly.
"That's it. That's it. Come on."
She shook the infant gently, praying to the Moon Goddess for a miracle she didn't deserve.
The baby coughed.
Water sprayed from her tiny mouth. Her chest heaved once, twice, and then she gasped. A huge, shuddering breath that filled her lungs with air and brought color rushing back to her blue-tinged skin.
And then silence.
No cry. No wail. No sound at all. Just those huge silver-grey eyes opening slowly, staring directly into the woman's face with an intensity that made her wolf whimper in recognition.
There was something ancient in those eyes. Something powerful. Something that didn't belong in the body of a newborn infant.
This was no ordinary child.
"Where did you come from?" the woman whispered, wrapping the baby tighter in the torn silver cloth. Her hands were still shaking, but from relief now instead of fear. "Where's your mother? How did you end up in the river?"
The infant just stared at her, unblinking and aware. One tiny hand reached up and wrapped around the woman's finger with surprising strength.
The woman looked around frantically, searching for any sign of the baby's family. No one. Nothing but forest and river and the first rays of dawn breaking over the distant mountains. No footprints in the mud besides her own. No signs of a struggle or an accident. Just the broken basket and the silver cloth that seemed to glow faintly in the early morning light.
She thought about going back to the small shack she shared with her mate. About showing him this miracle that had literally fallen into her lap.
But then reality crashed down on her like a physical weight.
No.
He would never accept this. He'd call the baby cursed. He'd say the woman was trying to trick him into raising another man's bastard child. He'd kill the infant, or worse. He'd sell her. Everyone knew that orphaned pups, especially female omegas, were worth good money to the right buyers.
The woman's arms tightened around the baby protectively. Something fierce and maternal awakened inside her chest, something she'd thought was dead after years of being told she was barren and worthless.
"You're mine now," she decided, her voice steady for the first time in years. "I'll protect you. I'll keep you safe. I'll love you the way you deserve to be loved."
The infant's mouth opened as if to respond, as if to cry out in relief or gratitude. But no sound came out. Just silence. Absolute, eerie silence.
"Oh, sweetheart." Her heart broke and mended at the same time. "You can't speak, can you? Something happened to your voice."
She gently touched the baby's throat, feeling for any injury or deformity. Nothing. The silence wasn't physical. It was something else. Something magical, if the silver cloth and the glowing runes were any indication.
"That's alright," the woman murmured, pulling the baby closer to her chest. "That's alright. I'll love you anyway. I'll teach you other ways to communicate. You'll never be alone again. I promise you that."
She stood carefully, cradling the infant against her chest where the baby could feel her heartbeat. She couldn't go back to that shack. Not to that man who'd beaten her and broken her spirit. But she knew where she could go.
The outskirts of Silver Moon Pack territory. The poorest district where the omegas lived in abandoned buildings and makeshift shelters, where no one asked questions and everyone minded their own business. Where she could disappear with this child and start over.
Where they could both have a chance at something better.
"I need to give you a name," the woman said softly as she began walking away from the river. "Something strong. Something that means you survived against all odds."
She thought about it as she picked her way through the forest, heading toward the slums she'd always avoided. The baby nestled against her chest, silent but warm and alive.
"Mina," the woman finally decided. "I'll call you Mina. It means 'will' and 'protection.' You have the will to survive, little one. And I'll be your protection from now on."
The baby's eyes seemed to focus on her face at the sound of the name, as if she understood and approved.
Behind them, the torn silver cloth left on the rocks began to glow faintly in the dawn light, pulsing once like a heartbeat. Then the last remnants of the protection magic faded completely, dissolving into nothing.
On the eastern bank of the River Styx, a broken woman carried a silent child toward an uncertain future, both of them survivors in their own way.
Neither of them knew that on the opposite bank, another story was beginning.
Neither of them knew about the prophecy or the brother left behind.
Not yet.
Western Bank - Dawn
Lord Daemon Sterling had always hated hunting trips with a passion that bordered on irrational.
Too much mud on expensive boots. Too much pretending to enjoy the chase with pompous nobles who couldn't track a wounded deer if it left a map with detailed directions. Too much forced laughter at crude jokes around campfires. Too much bad whiskey. Too much discussing pack politics he had absolutely no interest in.
He'd separated from the hunting party over an hour ago, claiming he needed to relieve himself in private. Really, he just wanted silence and solitude. A moment to himself where he didn't have to perform the role of dutiful heir to the Sterling legacy.
The western bank of the River Styx marked the border between his family's vast estate and the wild neutral territory beyond. Daemon sat on a fallen log, watching the water gradually turn from black to gold as the sun began to rise over the mountains.
He found himself wondering, not for the first time, what it would be like to just keep walking into that neutral territory. To leave the Sterling name and all its weight behind him. To abandon the expectations, the arranged marriage to a woman who openly despised him, the constant pressure to produce an heir and continue the precious bloodline.
To just be free for once in his miserable, controlled existence.
A sound shattered his thoughts.
Daemon's head snapped up, his wolf surging to immediate alertness. That sound. That was a baby crying. He was certain of it.
But something was profoundly wrong with the sound. It was there and yet not there at the same time, like his ears were picking up on something his mind had to fill in rather than actually hearing.
He stood quickly and moved toward the sound, his hunting instincts taking over. Within seconds, he found the source.
A woven basket, half-submerged in the shallow water near the bank, caught on a tangle of exposed tree roots. Inside, wrapped in tattered silver cloth that seemed to shimmer oddly in the dawn light, was a baby boy.
The infant's mouth was open wide, his face red with obvious effort and his tiny fists clenched tight. He was clearly screaming with everything he had, his whole small body shaking with the intensity of it.
But absolutely no sound came out.
Daemon stared in complete shock. The baby was crying. He could see it with his own eyes. But there was no noise. Just eerie, impossible silence that made the hair on the back of his neck stand up.
He reached down carefully and lifted the baby free, basket and all, pulling the entire thing out of the water. The moment his hands made contact with the silver cloth, something extraordinary happened.
The infant stopped crying immediately, as if someone had flipped a switch. Those silver-grey eyes, ancient and knowing and far too aware for a newborn, locked onto Daemon's face with laser focus.
Recognition slammed into him like a physical blow to the chest.
His wolf surged forward violently, dominant and aggressive, ready to attack this strange creature that felt fundamentally wrong and dangerously powerful. But then, just as quickly, his wolf submitted. Dropped to its metaphorical belly. Bowed its head in absolute deference.
This child was an Alpha. More than an Alpha. Something old and primal deep inside Daemon recognized something even older in this baby, and his wolf knew instinctively that it was in the presence of something far greater than itself.
"What are you?" Daemon breathed, his voice barely a whisper.
The baby's hand wrapped around his finger with surprising strength. No answer came, of course. Just that unnerving, silent stare that seemed to look straight through him and catalog every secret he'd ever kept.
Daemon forced himself to look away and assess the situation more rationally. He looked around frantically, searching for any sign of the baby's parents. No one. No tracks in the mud except his own boot prints. Nothing to indicate where the basket had come from or how it had ended up in the river.
Except.
His eyes traveled upstream, toward where he could hear the distant roar of the rapids. Toward where someone could theoretically have put a baby in a basket and sent him downstream to either find safety or drown in the attempt.
His jaw clenched with sudden anger. What kind of monster would abandon a helpless child to the mercy of a river's deadly current?
But even as the thought formed, his educated mind caught on something else. His eyes focused more carefully on the silver cloth wrapped around the baby. He could see faint markings on the fabric, remnants of something that looked disturbingly familiar from his years of studying ancient pack magic.
Protection runes. Ancient, powerful protection magic that predated modern pack society by centuries.
This wasn't abandonment born of cruelty. This was desperation. This was a last resort. This was someone trying to save this child's life by any means necessary.
"Someone wanted you alive very badly," Daemon murmured, looking back down at the baby's face. The infant's grip tightened around his finger as if in acknowledgment. "Someone powerful enough to use Oracle magic."
He thought about what to do next. About taking the baby back to his estate and presenting him to his family. His cold, calculating mate who'd made it clear she'd married him purely for social status. His parents, who cared only about the Sterling legacy and bloodline purity.
They would have questions. Too many questions that Daemon couldn't answer. They would want to know where the baby came from, who the parents were, what bloodline he carried.
But then Daemon thought about the alternative. About leaving this obviously special child here at the river's edge to either die of exposure or be found by rogues or worse.
No.
His wolf absolutely wouldn't allow it, was already snarling possessively at the mere thought. Something primal and paternal had awakened inside him the moment he'd touched this baby.
"You're mine now," Daemon said firmly, standing up with the baby cradled carefully against his chest. The infant settled against him immediately, silent but somehow trusting. "I'll protect you. I'll raise you as my own son."
He looked down at the baby's face, at those knowing silver-grey eyes that seemed to hold secrets older than time itself.
"I'll call you Rafe," Daemon decided. "It means 'wolf counsel' in the old language. Fitting for a boy who can't speak but somehow still seems to know everything."
The baby's fingers flexed around his hand, and Daemon could have sworn he saw approval in those ancient eyes.
He turned toward his estate, his mind already working through the story he would need to tell. A distant cousin's child, orphaned in a tragic accident. No one would question a Sterling taking in family, especially not a male child who could potentially continue the bloodline.
He would make it work. He had to.
Behind him, the broken half of the basket floated away downstream, carrying with it the last flickering remnants of protection runes that dissolved into nothing as the magic finally died completely.
On opposite banks of the River Styx, two people walked away from the water carrying two infants who'd been torn apart by fate and circumstance.
Neither Daemon nor the poor omega woman knew about the other half of the miracle they'd found.
Neither knew about the twin left behind on the opposite shore.
Neither knew about the prophecy that had marked these children before they were even born.
Not yet.
But one day, the twins would find each other again. One day, they would remember. One day, they would fulfill their mother's final wish and rise together as the Moon Goddess had always intended.
The Twin Moons would survive, separated but never truly alone.
And when they finally reunited, the world would tremble.
