Chapter 71
Chapter 71
Isolde
The early morning sun glinted off storefronts as we drove into Crescent Bay's central shopping district. I watched the bustling sidewalks with a mixture of anticipation and concern. After weeks immersed in the secretive world of werewolves, returning to ordinary human spaces felt strangely foreign.
"Are you sure this is a good idea?" I asked, glancing at Elissa in the rearview mirror. Her face was practically pressed against the window glass, eyes wide with excitement. "Won't a group of... well, your kind... attract attention in such a public place?"
Dorian's hand found mine across the center console. "We blend in better than you might think," he said, his voice low and reassuring. "And I'll make sure everything stays safe."
"Besides," Aiden added from the back seat, "Elissa has barely left Stone territory her entire life. Her exposure to modern human commercial districts is limited at best."
I turned to look at Elissa, surprised. "Really? You've never been to a mall?"
"Only tiny shops on the outskirts," she admitted, bouncing slightly in her seat. "Nothing like this! Look at all those stores! And the people! And—oh my god, is that an ice cream shop with thirty-two flavors?"
Despite my concerns, I couldn't help smiling at her enthusiasm. It reminded me that beneath the supernatural politics and ancient bloodlines, there was something endearingly human about the Stone siblings.
Dorian parked the SUV, then turned to face us all with his authoritative Alpha expression. "Ground rules: stay together, maintain control of all senses, and if anyone feels overwhelmed—"
"We know, we know," Elissa interrupted, already unbuckling her seatbelt. "Dial down the wolf stuff, act human, blah blah. Can we go now? I want to see everything!"
Aiden shot his sister a warning look, but his lips twitched with amusement. As we exited the car, I noticed how both men subtly positioned themselves—Dorian at my right side, Aiden slightly behind me to the left. It felt like being escorted by bodyguards, except these bodyguards were occasionally glaring at each other over my head.
The mall's interior was a sensory explosion—bright lights, conversations echoing off marble floors, music bleeding from various stores, and a cocktail of food court aromas mixing with perfume samples and cleaning products. I'd grown accustomed to these things, but watching my companions' reactions was fascinating.
Dorian maintained his usual stoic expression, though I noticed his nostrils flare slightly. Aiden's jaw tightened, but he kept his composure. Elissa, however, was practically vibrating with excitement, darting from window to window.
"Look at those shoes! And those bags! Oh—perfume!" She grabbed my hand and pulled me toward a fragrance counter. "I want to try everything!"
Before I could warn her, she'd already spritzed a heavy jasmine scent directly in front of her face and inhaled deeply. The effect was immediate—her eyes watered, she coughed violently, and I could see her pupils dilate.
Dorian was at her side instantly, his hand on her shoulder. "Dial it back," he murmured, low enough that only the three of us could hear. "Remember what we practiced—reduce sensitivity by seventy percent in crowded spaces."
"Sorry," she wheezed, blinking rapidly. "Forgot how strong these things are to us."
I watched curiously as she closed her eyes, took three measured breaths, and her expression relaxed. When she opened her eyes again, she seemed more centered, though no less excited.
"Better?" Dorian asked.
She nodded. "Still smells like someone drowned in flowers, but at least my brain isn't exploding anymore."
Aiden approached with an amused expression. "This is why training is essential before venturing into human spaces. Perhaps next time, start with something less aggressive than the perfume counter?"
"Where's the fun in that?" Elissa grinned, already moving toward another display. This time, she was more cautious, waving her hand over bottles rather than spraying them directly.
We spent the next hour following Elissa's enthusiastic lead through jewelry stores, candy shops, and boutiques. Despite initial concerns, I found myself enjoying the expedition. There was something refreshing about experiencing familiar places through Elissa's excitement.
Our peaceful shopping excursion hit a snag when Elissa spotted a high-end women's boutique. "We should get something for you!" she declared, linking her arm through mine. "You've been wearing mostly practical clothes since I've known you."
"I don't really need—" I began, but she was already dragging me through the doorway, Dorian and Aiden following with varying degrees of resignation.
The sales associate approached with a practiced smile that faltered slightly when she noticed Dorian's intimidating presence. He had that effect on humans, even when he wasn't trying.
"We're looking for something special for my friend," Elissa announced grandly. "Something that shows she's not just a doctor, but also an absolute queen."
I felt my cheeks warm. "Elissa, really, this isn't necessary—"
"I think," Dorian interrupted smoothly, "this one would suit her." He moved with surprising confidence through the racks, selecting a floor-length gown in deep forest green. The silk material caught the light as he held it up. "The color would bring out the blue in her eyes."
The fact that he'd noticed the flecks of green in my blue eyes made something flutter in my chest. Before I could respond, Aiden stepped forward.
"An interesting choice," he said, his tone neutral but challenging. "Though perhaps something that allows for more movement would better suit Isolde's practical nature." He selected a sapphire blue cocktail dress with a modern cut. "This would highlight her intelligence while still celebrating her beauty."
The two men locked eyes over the dresses, and I could feel the tension crackling between them. Elissa caught my eye and suppressed a giggle.
"I, um, don't really need fancy dresses," I stammered, unsure how to navigate this unexpected competition.
"Nonsense," Elissa said, plucking both garments from the men's hands. "Try them both. Consider it research into werewolf taste preferences."
Before I could protest further, I found myself ushered into a fitting room with both dresses and Elissa's excited commentary through the door.
