The Memory of His Hands

The Memory of His Hands
The air was thick with the scent of burning incense, the moonlight filtering through the high windows of the Moon Temple. Lyra stood in the center of the sacred room, surrounded by ancient symbols carved into the stone. Her heart pounded in her chest as Nira prepared the ritual—preparing to sever the bond between Lyra and Kael once and for all.

Lyra stood still, but inside, her mind was a whirlwind. She couldn’t stop thinking about the words Nira had spoken, the promises of freedom, of a life where she wouldn’t be bound to the curse, to the goddess. The thought of escaping the goddess’s influence was tempting, the idea of breaking free from the weight of it all—of severing the ties that had bound her to Kael since the very beginning. She could almost taste that freedom. But then, she thought of Kael.

Her chest tightened at the thought of him, and for a moment, she almost couldn’t breathe.

Could I really let go of him?

Her mind wandered back to the first time she had met Kael. The way his presence had filled the room, his eyes dark with intensity, yet somehow soft when he looked at her. The way he had held her—how he had made her feel like she was the only thing that mattered in a world full of chaos. The memory of his touch sent a shiver down her spine.

She could almost feel it now. The heat of his hands on her skin. The way they had wrapped around her so tenderly. That warmth—that comfort—it had been like nothing else. It was a warmth that had soothed her when the world had seemed too dark, too cold, too overwhelming.

No, she thought sharply, shaking her head as if she could shake the memory away. I can’t forget him. I can’t do it.

Nira stood at the altar, her hands moving with the practiced ease of someone who had performed this ritual countless times. The high priestess had always been calm, always in control, but now, there was something different in her eyes. There was a sense of urgency, a pressing need that Lyra didn’t quite understand.

"Are you sure about this, Lyra?" Nira’s voice broke through her spiraling thoughts, her tone steady but soft. "Once we begin, there’s no turning back. You will forget him. You will sever the bond between you and Kael. The curse will be broken."

Lyra looked at Nira, her throat tightening. She wanted to say yes, she wanted to take the escape, the freedom that Nira was offering. But every time she thought about it, she was struck by the memory of Kael’s hands.

His hands…

She closed her eyes, and the image of him filled her mind. His strong, calloused fingers, the way they had gently caressed her face as if she were something fragile and precious.

How could I give that up?

But the truth gnawed at her—the goddess, the curse, the power that had bound them together. Could she truly live with this pain, with the knowledge that she was the cause of so much destruction, that Kael had suffered for so long because of her?

But what if it was the only thing worth holding onto?

A part of her had never truly believed the curse was their fate. A part of her had always believed that their love, their bond, was something that could be real, something that could survive the goddess's control. But that part of her had been buried beneath the weight of everything else—Kael’s bloodline, the goddess’s influence, the curse that seemed unbreakable.

She thought about the last time she had seen Kael, standing there in the field, the way his eyes had softened when they met hers. The way he had whispered her name. And she remembered how, despite everything—despite the curse, the pain, the darkness—he had still wanted her.

How could I erase that?
Tears welled up in her eyes, and she wiped them away quickly, as though she could wipe away the doubt, the uncertainty. She wasn’t sure what had happened between them—was it love? Or was it something else entirely? Something twisted by the goddess’s power, by the curse?

But no matter what it was, no matter how much it hurt, she couldn’t bring herself to destroy it. Not yet.

Lyra took a step back from the altar, her breath ragged as she struggled to regain control over her emotions. She could feel Nira’s gaze on her, sharp and unwavering, but for the first time since entering the temple, she didn’t care. The goddess could whisper in her ear all she wanted, the curse could taunt her with its power, but there was one thing Lyra knew—she could never give up Kael.

Not like this.

"I—I can’t," Lyra whispered, her voice trembling but resolute. "I can’t forget him, Nira. I can’t forget Kael."

The high priestess didn’t say anything at first. She simply stared at Lyra, her eyes unreadable. The air between them seemed to thicken with the weight of the decision, with the tension of what could have been. Nira’s lips parted, but for a long moment, no words came. Instead, she stood silently, as though weighing the consequences of Lyra’s choice.

"You understand what this means?" Nira finally asked, her voice softer now. "You are choosing to live with the curse. To live with the bond. You are choosing Kael and everything that comes with him."

Lyra nodded, her chest tightening. "Yes. I choose him. I choose this... even if it’s the hardest thing I’ve ever done."

For a moment, Nira was still, then she let out a soft sigh, the briefest hint of sadness in her eyes.

"Then the path you walk is yours to carry. But know this, Lyra—you may never be free of the goddess. You may never escape the curse."

Lyra’s heart thundered in her chest, but her resolve remained firm. "Then I’ll fight. I’ll fight for him. For us."

As she turned away from the altar, the cool night air hit her like a wave, a rush of clarity sweeping through her. She wasn’t free, but she would not walk this path alone. She would face whatever darkness lay ahead—with Kael, with her love, with the bond they shared.

It would be enough.

As Lyra stepped out into the night, her heart still heavy with the weight of her decision, a shadow flickered at the edge of the clearing. She froze. Was someone watching her?

And then, the unmistakable sound of footsteps—heavy, urgent—came from behind her.

"Lyra..."
Her pulse quickened, and she turned, heart in her throat, only to find Kael standing there in the moonlight, his eyes blazing with intensity.

"Kael," she whispered, breathless.

But as he took a step toward her, Nira appeared before them.

"Lyra." The priestess called unto her. "There's something else you need to know."

Lyra heart skipped. "What?"

Nira hesitated. She gazed at both of them before speaking.

"Lyra, you need to know about the origin of the curse and how your mother died."

Kael and Lyra stood still and speechless.
