Chapter 238

Chapter 238

Ever since Cleo had comforted Bianca, she'd come to accept that some things simply couldn't be changed. She respected Ethan's decision to undergo the experimental treatment. Still, a deep sadness remained buried in her heart, even as she continued to run the Smith Group with her usual iron-fisted efficiency.

Upon arriving at the office that morning, she discovered that unidentified parties were conspiring against the Smith Group. Irregularities had begun to surface within the firm's financial ledgers. Ethan had been absent for an extended period, and those with predatory designs on the company could no longer remain restrained.

Bianca immediately called an emergency board meeting. After getting everything back in order, she finally had a moment to herself. She rubbed her temples, feeling a headache coming on.

Right now, she was caught between a rock and a hard place.

When she returned home that evening, she noticed an unfamiliar car parked at the entrance.

It was Ethan's uncle, Aubrey Smith.

Ever since Ethan's incident, they'd been investigating behind the scenes. Even after hearing that Ethan had been found, they hadn't given up. They'd tried to have him followed, only to discover that all of Ethan's movements were kept strictly confidential.

But if Ethan had been found and still hadn't resurfaced, something must have gone wrong—and it wasn't something minor.

They had spent years at Ethan's mercy, and they would not pass up this chance.

Seeing Bianca enter, Aubrey's face broke into a concerned smile.

"Bianca, you're back?"

Bianca's expression darkened. Under normal circumstances, she maintained cordial relations with him. But now, knowing exactly why he was here, she couldn't manage even a polite smile.

"Coming by this late—aren't you worried about disturbing Aunt Cleo's rest?"

Aubrey didn't seem bothered in the slightest.

"Actually, Bianca, Aunt Cleo, Ethan is my nephew after all. I've been concerned about him ever since his injury. It's been quite a while since I've seen him. He's all right, isn't he?"

Sure enough, he was here fishing for information about Ethan's whereabouts.

Bianca offered a slight smile.

"You know how Ethan is—sometimes his mind isn't on work. He wanted to take advantage of this opportunity to really relax, so he took his wife on a trip. As for where they went, we don't know either."

Cleo chimed in.

"That's right. If you're genuinely concerned, we can all have dinner together when he gets back. But if you have other motives, there's no point in prying."

At that, Aubrey stood up.

"Aunt Cleo, you're being too sensitive. We're just showing normal concern. I'll be going now."

After leaving Smith Manor, Aubrey's expression turned stormy.

"What about that maid I had you look into?"

He'd suspected all along that Bianca and Cleo wouldn't tell him the truth, so he'd prepared a backup plan.

He'd had someone pressure and bribe one of Bianca's trusted maids. Through her, Aubrey had obtained their exact location.

"Get on it right away. I want every single detail."

At the overseas lab, a student in a white coat looked down at Yanny with disdain. He was one of Jack's interns.

"Are the facilities in your country really that backward? You have to come all the way here for treatment?"

Yanny looked up at him, but she didn't want to start a conflict. As long as they could achieve their goal of treating Ethan, nothing else mattered.

"Dr. Wilson is very renowned, so we came here seeking his help. There's nothing shameful about that."

The intern let out a cold laugh. He then picked up a vial of medication, preparing to administer an injection.

But Yanny noticed something was off. She quickly spoke up.

"Wait—isn't that dosage wrong?"

The intern looked at her with irritation.

"You're just a caregiver. If you don't understand, then don't speak up, okay? Which one of us is the doctor here?"

Yanny didn't have deep medical knowledge, but ever since the experiment began, she'd stayed by Ethan's side constantly. Every piece of data was meticulously recorded in her notebook. At night, Yanny would review everything again to make sure she hadn't made any mistakes.

This particular medication—Jack had always used 30 milliliters. Never more. She even remembered Jack saying this drug couldn't be administered in higher doses.

That's why she was questioning it now.

"I haven't received any notice from Jack about adjusting the dosage."

The intern glared at her.

"That's none of your business. If you want him to continue with the experiment, just do your job and record the data. Don't ask questions you shouldn't be asking."

But Yanny refused to back down. She couldn't let anything go wrong with Ethan.

Their argument quickly drew Jack's attention. The intern looked at Jack with obvious displeasure.

"She's just some woman who doesn't understand anything, and now she's trying to interfere with the experiment."

Yanny looked calmly at both of them.

"I'm sorry, Dr. Wilson. I'm simply raising a reasonable concern based on what I've observed. I have no intention of delaying the experiment."

The intern scoffed, continuing his mockery.

"If you chose to come to someone else's country for treatment, don't act so high and mighty."

His attitude stood in stark contrast to Yanny's composure. Jack let out a quiet sigh.

"What exactly happened here?"

Seeing the intern's arrogance, Yanny explained what had just occurred.

"I've been keeping very careful records this whole time. I've noticed that this medication's dosage has never changed. If his actions are correct, I'm willing to apologize for mine."

Jack looked at the intern with disappointment.

"Did you forget? Even the caregiver is more attentive than you."

The intern didn't seem to think he'd done anything wrong.

"It was just a careless mistake."

Jack shook his head.

"Leave the lab for now."

The intern rolled his eyes and walked out. Watching him go, Yanny nodded slightly.

"Thank you, Dr. Wilson."

Jack shook his head.

"I should be thanking you. If you hadn't caught that error in time, we could have had a serious experimental mishap."

Jack's gaze fell on the notebook in her hands. Her dedication exceeded even that of his own intern.

"Ms. Spencer, you're truly remarkable. If you're willing, I'd like to take you on as my student. I'd be happy to teach you everything I know."

Yanny looked surprised. She quickly waved her hand.

"I don't specialize in this field. I think I'm only this meticulous because the person in that bed is someone I care about. I don't want to waste your kindness, but I don't think I'm suitable."

Jack smiled.

"You don't have to answer right away. After all, the experiment isn't completely finished yet. You can think it over carefully."

With that, Jack administered the correct dosage and left. William happened to walk in just then, his eyes full of pride.

"Getting praise from someone like Dr. Wilson—Yanny, you're amazing. He even wants to take you on as his student."
